Apart from the small snatches of dialogue which are mercilessly repeated over and over “It’s a bad day to buy wine”, “I haven’t taken leave of my senses”, “I feel six feet tall”, “I can outrun a centaur”, which everyone agrees are the most annoying things ever, there are some sound effects I’d love to see the back of.

A lot of the sound effects in the game are really irritating. I generally play with sound off now because of them.

I’m mainly talking about the Necro Staff 1 skill and the Mesmer Greatsword 1 skill. These sounds set my teeth on edge and make me actively avoid those classes.

The sound effect for Flame Ram hitting a door in WvW has changed recently, it’s gotten a lot louder, quite annoying as well.

What do other players think, apart from the voices repeating the same things over and over, which we all know is annoying, what about those sound effects that make you sad?

I’ve resorted to avoiding using the staff on my necro just to avoid the sound. I want to get final rest for her. At that point I will just turn sound off I guess. I really wish they would remove that sound from the staff. You get a few necros at an event using the staff and wow, it gets annoying.

The mesmer greatsword one doesn’t bother me as much but I can see how it would get annoying if it did bother you.

It’s a kitten conspiracy. Kittens gonna be kittens. All is vain!

I’m with you, fret not. I’m sure there are others who like it too.

As for the norn male attack sound, I just think it sounds ridicolous, wouldn’t have a problem if it didn’t and if it varied with other sounds.

I also think Sylvari females shouldn’t woof when getting hurt.

Sylvari females make these high pitched noises when getting struck and during some melee attacks, which made me reroll my ranger into a male Sylvari. >_>

And yes, I avoid using my necromancer’s staff because of the volume of its 1 skill. It’s not the sound so much as the volume, to me. Similar issue with mesmer greatsword skill 1. It’s so LOUD compared to all other sound effects.

Wouldn’t be so bad if greatsword wasn’t one of the most popular mesmer weapons ever, but it is, and most that I see rarely use any other skills than KRNGKRNGKRNG-KRNGKRNGKRNG, and it can be heard from quite a distance away, as well. Farther than other skill sounds.

The sound effect of that thing causes me to actively avoid mesmers, to the point of leaving events if more than one shows up, because of course, they’re all going to use greatsword skill 1 most of the time. Necro staff skill 1 isn’t as bad because that weapon isn’t so vastly popular with the class.

But seriously though, they really need to at least drop the volume on these skills, they’re louder than any other skill in the game, which also means that they carry further away, too. Just…argh.

Heimdall, thank you for voicing your concerns with sound effects. While the Mesmer skill, Spatial Surge, still needs to be adjusted to be more enjoyable, other issues that you’ve brought up have been addressed in recent patches.

Specifically, sylvari females making high pitched noise when getting struck should no longer be happening—this was a corrupted sound file that has since been repaired.

Also, several Necromancer skills, including Staff skills, have had their sounds adjusted.

Hopefully you’ll no longer have to avoid playing the characters that you’d otherwise have enjoyed playing!

It seems like the necromancer staff sounds got the same initial adjustment that the greatsaw/chain sword got. They seem a lot quieter than other necro attacks (especially staff 1), to the point that they can be hard to hear standing in Lion’s Arch. For comparison, I ran the staff skills in sequence, then ran the dagger/dagger skills. The difference is jolting. Maybe consider adjusting the staff up and some of the dagger skills (especially Dagger 2) down to a midpoint and get everything at the same level (assuming it sounds like this for more people than just me and my sound setup)?

When the skills have varying volumes based upon some people’s personal like/dislike for the sounds, it gets hard to set a volume that allows me to hear all the sounds well enough without some of them being way too loud.

Sounds are way too unbalanced in level.

- During cutscenes everything gets turned up too dang much
- Very low level sounds, this game deserves better sound quality*
- Norn males, annoying moans and groans during fights and gathering materials
- in Divinity´s Reach, sorry to say this, but it sure sounds like some females are having a really good time (alot of sexual moaning).
- Weapons are either very flat/boring in sound or very high pitched, wich makes it really annoying.

Necro staff is very high pitched (1)
Bows sounds really flat and boring
Knives and swords… Fighting with tincans?
Mesmer greatsword (1), very high pitched

During larger fights alot of the sound effects dissapears.
At times the sound takes forever to load.

*This game deserves way better and more realistic sound quality!

I’ve stopped playing my Elementalist because of how often the voiceovers happened during attunement swapping. Hearing “Earth, fire, I am the wind!, etc” literally every couple seconds just drove me to reroll it was so annoying.

I love Nolan North’s sexy voice just as much as the next guy (his super sexy voice <3), but I would like a 75% chance not to hear the shout.

I’m definitely driven insane by the relentless low frequency ‘womps’ my channeled earth spells make. It’s played every time a rock is thrown, and 4 rocks are thrown per cast. Not only that, but since a good rotation requires you to use all four elements, hearing
“I Channel the Flame!”
“Ferocious Fire!”
“Fire Consumes at my Will”
“I Channel Rock, and Soil!”
“Earth and Stone conform to my will!”
“I Channel the Wind!”
“Glorious Air”
“I am River and Ocean!”
“Powerful Water!”
“Currents Flow by my Will!”

every single one of these lines, at least once per fight, gets tedious. Can’t there be some sort of mechanism other than “random” to generate these effects? Like, maybe my toon will only shout “Ferocious Fire!” when i’m with a combo field, or in a group with another elementalist, and we say it together.

Even just an increase in rarity would be nice. I really do here all of these per boss fight, at least once. But this is a perfect opportunity to have the sound effect be an indication that casting in that particular element will have a greater effect. Like, “Ferocious Fire!” plays only when I have stacks of Might when I’m attuning.

Most of the shouts across all races in the game seem pretty underwhelming to me. A female norn warrior shouting “For great justice!” is possibly the weakest thing ever.

I’m also annoyed by warriors incessantly announcing their adrenaline gain, even when it’s decreasing. In my opinion there is absolutely no need for adrenaline audio at all, except maybe when it’s maxed.

Boon lines like “Eat my dust!” and “I could outrun a centaur!” make me want to stab my eardrums with an icepick.

I have some issues with certain weapon sounds being a bit underwhelming, myself. In specific, the hammer. Much of the time I hear a little “plink” sound as if I’m tapping my enemy with a tin ball-peen toy hammer. I want a nice, crunchy “kawhump!” when I smack someone with a 15lb block of iron. Axes, as well don’t really sound like they’re making much purchase when they hit. I’m going to assume that some of the sounds are, shall we say, “family-proofed” in the way blood and gore are pretty much nonexistent in this game. If this is the reason for this sort of lightweight, almost generic sound effect usage, I’d love to see some option similar to the music playlist so users can plug in their own sounds. A nice “boingggg!” from a hammer would be fun for a while, actually. After all, it’d only be local, so no one else has to hear my axes chopping through mail and bone if they don’t want to.

On the good side, I really like the ambient sounds in the game, though some, such as running/pouring water, cut in and out strangely (could be my card). While I love the music and think Jeremy is an absolute master, after five months I’ve chosen to turn it down to barely audible (FAR longer lifespan than any other in-game music) so I can enjoy the ambiance. I especially love the Grove, and the various swampy areas and often just idle in those places with my headphones on while doing various tedious junk on other screens.

It must be a bug, looping the same 1 second clip ad nauseum. Gw2 is so artful, I can’t believe this is what a legendary is supposed to sound like. Taking the fern hound howl and playing it in the distance every 10-15 seconds randomly would be much better.

NO, it needs to go higher, they just fixed it and now I can hear it if I am not fighting. It is a chainsaw, so it is supposed to sound like one. They just need to put a volume slider in for the weapons. I liked the old necro staff sound better, it was just too loud, now, because of complaints, it sounds just odd and mild. The weapon sounds will never please everyone, so I hope that they will put a slider in, so that I can hear my chainsaw while I am in battle, and adjust the other ones to my liking.

Another option would be to have stand alone sound files so that users could just modify/replace them to suit their own desires. I would ramp up the volume on my chainsaw, and customize others. That option would be better than the slider.
.ogg files would be nice, and are used in other games.

I can barely hear The Predator, it’s so quiet for a GUN. I have to literally be inside the guy if I want to hear the pew pew, but it won’t matter THAT much once I have my own Predator… All I need is that bloody precursor… Any ideas? I’ve been farming CoF p1 for too long

I actually find the “I feel 6 feet tall” quote hilarious! But aside from that to remain on topic, I find that the pounding sound that’s accompanied by a small visual affect after I dodge to drive me crazy. This sound comes delayed after the effect is shown and I always feel that I’m hit by an enemy. I think it occurs after using the running Sigil for my Warrior maybe.

I don’t think it’s affects my character, so I wish the sound effect would be something pleasant instead of me thinking an enemy’s gotten me.

As a Guardian I refuse to use the staff as I can’t stand the spam sound of the auto attack and just gives me a headache , Zealot’s Fury has a similar annoying sound effect to is as well and whats worse is it doesn’t even line up with the attack it self and seems like it doesn’t even belong.

The scepter used to annoy me as well but lowering the effects volume helps to the point I don’t notice it as much now, however lowing the effects doesn’t help with the ones that still annoy me as they are a lot more bass to them.

Also “For Great Justice” can go do one, why is it the only shout I hear other than my own guardian shouts, especially considering the amount of warriors that use it is ridiculous.

The dogs (the War Beast’s) in the Harathi Hinterlands Meta up in the Modniir Gorge seems a bit buggy as well its just constant loud noise coming from lord knows where.

Sound is extremely important to me and Guild Wars 2 is one of the best games sound wise for me( especially when you wander around and sound changes depending on the environment or where your standing relative to where the sounds coming from) , its just let down by a few issues.

I enjoy most of the sounds in the game – and many are actually wonderfully done.

I would be -endlessly- happy, however, if someone would PLEASE strangle the woman in Hoelbrak (mentioned by the OP): “Take heed! I haven’t taken leave of my senses!” GAHHHHdasghgsd…. for some reason that line just makes me nuts!

There is still the audio bug involving “exaggerated” whispers – I remember posting about it way back during the BWE’s – in certain areas of Wayfarer Foothills (mainly near the TP/all the NPCs in that area) you can still hear it – overly loud, breathy whispering.

I agree 100% with considering dropping the chance you’ll hear “For Great Justice,” and -especially- with the post concerning ele’s shouts on attunement swap – I also have a female sylvari ele and I wish we’d only hear it during certain situations as the poster suggested, or perhaps 25% of the time?

I can’t exactly remember where this is, but it’s somewhere in eastern Kryta I think. So, there is this scrit that constantly goes:
“Share tasty beer, yes?” And it just goes on and on and on and on about sharing that kitten beer. NPC conversation loops should REALLY have the timer extended.

I don’t understand why I have to hear warriors shouting about their adrenalin while players can’t hear my guardian shouts despite the fact that I’m actually giving them a bunch of boons. For example, in the colossus fractal when I can’t carry the hammer anymore I gave the guy carrying it in my party stability but he just waited until the air stopped blowing rather than running forward since there was no audio cue that he could move without being knocked down.

The staff 1 for necro was fine for me… but the auto attack on the shortbow sounds like it’s going to make my ears bleed if I listen to it for too long. :/ That needs to be changed AND that kitten mini firestorm. Its walk sound effect is the loudest sound in the entire game.

The sound a female sylvari makes often when crippled. It sounds like a cross between someone strangling a mid-sized dog, a southern hog-calling competition entry and an alpine yodeller. It seems to go on almost as long as a hog call.

The only way to make this not grate on my nerves would be to have female sylvari rushed by a pack of domestic hogs every time, then at least I’d know they’d won the hog call.

I sometimes turn effects down all the way to avoid this, but then I miss other audio cues.

On my Male Charr Guardian, he has the habit of yelling one word (not yet distinguishable). I think he might be saying “Stong!” but other times it sounds like “Stung!” or “Skrum!”. No matter what he is actually saying… very annoying (especially since he yells it after a fight almost every time).

Male Charr shout “I feel… STRONG!” whenever they gain Might. The first two words are really soft compared to the third, so they’re easy to miss when you’re in a fight.

I personally have enjoyed the audio in game, music most of all. This game has lasted the entire time and I’ve had no desire to turn it down/off. Most MMOs don’t even last 1 month.
But, like the rest of you above me, I do find some sound effects to be annoying. I agree with the Mesmer greatsword #1 attack. Though, don’t avoid it, I just don’t like the greatsword in general. I sort of enjoy the newer sound of the necro staff attack, the old one was terrible. And I never understood why sword/greatsword impact sounds like its hitting a bucket or something. It’s a very hollow sound. Either bow sound on Rangers is terrible, doesn’t actually sound like a bow would… Bow’s should have a “twang” sound, not a “kshnk” sound. (pardon the sound descriptions, I’m at work)
And the necro pets make horrible sounds. I believe its the Shadow Fiend that makes the horrible sound. I also know the Bone Fiend is pretty bad. (And I run a full minion lineup on my Necro _ )
I get more annoyed from hearing the same quotes over and over again. (which I won’t state any, cause 99% of them are covered in a different topic.)

Necro staff 1 was changed but still bad! Now it sounds like nails scratching a chalkboard.

It’s a shadowy hand flying through the air, can’t you find some kind of cool ‘whoosh’ sound.
