Usually I don’t go into a forum war with other people, but this post simply is annoying.
Now to let you know – I play a thief and I consider my self to be pretty decent, so what I’ll do I’ll let you know of a few weaknesses for the thief (-.- the whispers community will hate me for this). Any way – I wont argue that STEALTH (note – i did not say backstab) mechanic might be just a bit too powerful, but that’s if you actually invest in stealth.

Let me explain – if I invest into stealth, I’ll have conds being removed from me, I’ll have a bit of healing and I’ll be safe while doing that. Keep in mind that Warrs or Guards can do that with block as well, the difference here is that a thief can run away. BUT why did I say that stealth is just slightly powerful? Yet again – you have to invest in to it – that means you loose damage. The more you want to stay in stealth and the better it becomes – the more damage you loose. Thus you make a pick whether to hit hard or play safe.

Now for the back stab – yes the damage is high, BUT (love that word) you need to invest in to that – meaning you need crit and power traits – making your stealth… Err… well crap. You don’t remove conditions, you don’t heal as much and it lasts for a very short duration.

From the analytic point of view (I work as an analyst in a bank – trust me, I’m pretty good at it): don’t say back stab is impossible to avoid. If the thief is using the pistol blinding powder and 2 to go in stealth – his stealth will be just a few seconds long. Assuming he has the signet and traits for damage and not for stealth – he wont be able to remove conditions. You were arguing in the begining of the post with someone, that using AOE’s is useless – well, sunshine, if the thief needs to wait in stealth – he has around 2 secs, then 4 secs before he can get back in to stealth again. The long stealth skills have high cd’s (if no traits invested into that). It will be around 45seconds. What that means ? If hes squishy – he cannot go near you, if he leaves the stealth – well gg. Blindness and blocks work as well – you just need to watch the map: you see a thief icon and then don’t? Might as well use block/blind or what ever. You see a thief running towards you and disappear – well its really the same as with a mage – run around, spin around an place a few aoe and he will NOT have a successful backstab (unless its a really lucky thief).

To sum up: I am a thief and even I can counter other thiefseses back stabs without using stealth. A skilled guard will SURELY counter that as well. Biggest crit I have ever done was probably around 8k but I don’t see these numbers often as I like to play safe and I don’t have all traits on damage like an idiot as then classes like warrs, good hunts, mesmers, engineers and necros will eat me up (other words I will only be useful against glass mages and guards as their hp pool is low). Average crit for me is around ~4-6k – if you don’t believe me these numbers are legit – ask around in your guild. But with low dmg I have good sustain, thus I can wear out warriors, mesmers and w/e I meet.

FINALLY (really sorry for the long post): Complaining about a single mechanic – isn’t very intelligent. As each class and each other champ has powerful combinations as well. YOU HAVE DODGE for gods sake. If a thief like that leaves stealth – hes dead, hit him twice (2 seconds pass – 2 till he can re-stealth) at this point 1 second cc should be enough to kill him. I do not believe stealth + backstab is toxic, as the issue here after reading this forum seems to be stealth rather than backstab. Remove that backstab – thief can still hit you, go into stealth and wait till he can hit you again. But to be fair.. well.. stealth is the ONLY good mechanic that thief has at the time being.

Oh and one last thing – why are you so squishy as a guard ? Come on man, guardian isn’t a damage dealer – that’s not his role. If you were being hit THAT MUCH you without a doubt did not have a single speck of toughness. From a person who does sPVP quite a bit (and to be fair I learned this while playing League of Legends getting from bronze to plat 1) you need to know your role – if you try to burst with a tank – you will fail. If you try to melee as a mage – you will fail, if you try to dps as an assassin – you will fail. That’s the meta in ALL GAMES not only gw2. If you chose guardian – you are not a DPS’er and you are not an assassin – your job is to hold a point. If you have PTV build – thief will hit you for around 4-5k from a backstab and you will have around 16-18k hp. He can hit a backstab once every 4 seconds – doesn’t sound so OP any more now does it? Lets do the math 5k each 4 seconds – you need at least 16 secs to kill you (if we were to assume you are standing in place looking pretty and hes only using backstabs) – but you have skills, you have heals and the fight will take probably around 30s-60s. Since the thief has to use stealth – point wont be captured and will belong to a guard, or the guard will overtake it. 1 minute of holding a specific point is a kitten long period of time, which might mean victory.

Look at it from the thieves (assassins) point of perspective – I would be an utter idiot to stand there and fight you for roughly 50 seconds as even if I win – reinforcements will be on their way and my victory will be short lived. Now an other option – I go to a point where you have a few squishies I hunt them down and take that point – now you have to leave the point you are guarding and I can take that point without having to engage a tank.

Dunno well sorry for spamming over and over again, no offence, with all due respect, but your point of view seems childish and it really does seem for me that you might need a bit more practice or to understand what each champ does and what role it has.

If you like hitting new/unaware players in the back for several thousand damage, freely stomping, then feeling good about yourself, say that instead.

For gods sake’s – NEW/UNAWARE – keywords (a lot of people advised to l2p – and your words confirm what they said). For the spinning around – yes you can hit to the side, but you need to reach the person – If I use Shadowstep to get close – I dont have an escape later, if I use skills like heartseeker or shadowshot to get close – I get out of stealth. I literally just now played a match, where I was fighting a guardian – yes I killed him multiple times, but not because of backstabs. My largest backstab to this guard actually was 2.5k – doesnt sound so hot ?

Blinded – he remains stealthed – thats true. “Clear Blind by casting any time between roughly .51 and .99 seconds after a Blind tick, then immediately re-cast Backstab to land it in a Blind field”. Sir if you do manage to hit a PURE backstab (it might be to the side as well) in that time period to a moving target – I bow down to you, but then you should consider rolling a thief and playing tournaments as you would be in between top 3 players (I have no doubt about that).

2 Seconds is a very short duration – if you use it to reposition your self – stealth is gone and the backstab with it. Stealth heal – yeah I agree that’s very powerfull, but lets remember that (I might be mixing these two up) warriors have a heal while blocking and guards have a heal with invulnerability.

Finally from your reply – you forgot the topic – 13k Backstabs are toxic, PERIOD.

Finally I tend not to use words like these, but its 1:25 AM here and I got back from work just 1.5 h back so I’m tired and annoyed after the day, but if some utter kitten of a person is complaining that he is being hit hard by an assassin while not having any slightest speck of defense – thats just moronic. In no perfect universe will a thief hit that number if you have at least 1-2 toughness items. Not even with 25 stacks of might and vulnerability on you AND EVEN WITH FURY, provided you have more than 2 toughness items.

huh? The screenshot was taken from a mesmer point of view, besides, i have minimal problems with thieves on my guard, even GC guard. The problem arises with other squishies such as mesmer, ele, ranger, etc.

Dont want to generalize, but your posts sound like another thief apologetic. I seriously wonder how come thieves keep walking in straight lines after going into stealth, or walking around their target while their skills are on CD instead of approaching when they are ready, letting themselves be hit by autoattacks.

Your scenarios include a lot of guessing, and guessing is not skills. If it was about guessing I would’ve now won the lotto, but instead Im as poor as ever. Look, I dont mind actual counterplay, but excuses are not accepted here.

Examples of counterplay :

-Revealing stealth on certain damage threshold
-Hard CC revealing thief
-Missing an attack on stealth reveals/or wont let you use anything but autoattack and remain stealth
-At certain range you become misty visible (like stealth for allies)


Examples of NOT counterplay;

-Swing your sword like an idjot
-Use your 40+ CD AoE on a 4 seconds CD stealth
-Hope they dont have steal, a bow, a teleport signet, a sword #2, a pistol #3
-Bend over and accept the face that berserker-other-classes are no-no apparently.

From my own post – what I personally do, if I see a thief stealth – I pop a blind field wait for 1 sec and then just run until he exits stealth – as simple as that. Specially that travelers are now nerfed – he wont catch you

Mesmer – I wont even waste my time commenting this – its a skill match up. It just is – its a 50:50 between skilled players.
Ele – a skilled ele will without a doubt kill a thief, unless the thief has something like thieves guild off his cd.
Ranger – well yeah this is minced meat for a thief (in many cases at least).

Not sure where you’re getting your facts because when those Professions are played well by those who learned how to play their profession, Thieves always have a hard time dealing with them.

I hate to say it, but I have to agree that you might not be a very good Mesmer.

Count to think of it – mesmers have a few builds one is condi-tanky, which is a pain for a thief and its a game of patience and one is a pure burst, which in a split second does insane amounts of damage, but is a running snowflake

Ohhhh and lets not forget arguments:
Mesmer – I wont even waste my time commenting this – its a skill match up. It just is – its a 50:50 between skilled players. – Because of the range/stealth/clones – he can keep dpsing you while you cant see him. Its a game of patience.
Ele – a skilled ele will without a doubt kill a thief, unless the thief has something like thieves guild off his cd. Simply the range and sustain are too huge. People who are morons – try to fight up close with elementalists. Their key here is hold your range, if you see someone getting closer – run and spam skills. No melee champ will ever kill an elementalist… EVER. (provided elementalist is good). How ever – its no challenge for a good hunt
Ranger – well yeah this is minced meat for a thief (in many cases at least). He can in some cases hold his range, but would have to be a really good hunt to win this match up. And this is the only matchup in which thief is really strong, but its like saying that ele is op because I cant kill it with a warrior.

The problem with invisibility in this game is NOT the outgoing damage or the fact that you “dont know when its coming”. Thats the point.
The problem lies in the lack of counterplay as stated.
The easiest way to fix that would be to make the invis BREAK when you MISS, get BLOCKED or DODGED.
There, i just made counterplay an option and forced thieves to use their brain.

Cogbyrn.7283 I agree with some things you say – but gw made a rouge a unique experience. I was sick and tired of thieves in games like WoW, and the ONLY reason I rolled a thief in gw was multiple stealths in 1 fight.

The topic of this fight in this thread was huge damage which supposedly is impossible to counter, which is nonsense. As far as the design goes – I agree with Todd.6573. I fully agree with what he said. If you miss an attack – you should go out of stealth.
I’m really sleepy now, so I dont remember if you go out of stealth when you hit a block, but I think you do. To make a thief go out of stealth if his attack gets dodged I think will not be possible in gw. Any way – the main thing is and its kindof the bottom line – I do think thief could use a bit of a re-work. I dont believe multiple stealths are bad and I dont want to see a wow’ish stealth as thats would be a class destruction.

But I’m pretty sure that the stealth (multiple stealths) wont get changed, unless it will be something equally interesting, as if the stealth mechanism was made to work like in WoW, I would at that very same moment roll any different champ other than a thief, and would just leave the thief somewhere at a jumping puzzle chest. I am pretty sure a lot of people would as well.
As far as the initial post goes – dont remember the posters name – he really does need more practice, as thieves in spvp are strong , but not because a pure nuke build thief can 1 hit a pure glass mesmer, who probably had less than 50% hp.

I’ve personally given countless great arguments, counters, build suggestions and justifications that have been dismissed or ignored, by the original poster, fortus.

It’s clear everyone will just have to agree to disagree. This thread serves no purpose because no matter what you tell him, his childish and narrow minded mind is set.

He wants to be able to pvp with a pve build on any class and not run Into any issues with the highest single target burst damage dealer in the game (the thief)

Glass canon thieves don’t run into a match and go 20 and 0 on kills. They die more than they kill. If you have to be running around as a glass cannon clothier and get 2 shot that’s your problem. You’ve already said that outside a thief you have no problems, so statistically you’re already doing better than the thief as a glass cannon build.

But please keep posting new threads crying about how awful your experiences are. I’m starting to enjoy it.

P.S my main is an elementalist. Over 2000 hours clocked. I also play my engineer a lot more than my thief. I have zero problems with either.

Then again I don’t try to play my ele in a pve spec and or gear. I’m not stupid, or silly enough to complain when it doesn’t work.

13k backstabs against glass builds are essential to the game. They assure that bunkers with protection can be pushed off point and put on the defensive. A 13k hit against a 1867 armor turns into just over a 5k hit against 3100 armor + protection. Meanwhile that GC build used to take down the bunker can be oneshot by other glass cannons right back. If you don’t want these types of hits, you also have to bring down some of the high defenses pushing everything towards the middle (and boring mediocrity imo).

Why do you keep mentioning sword when this thread and your complaint is about backstab?

And you are aware that pistol 3 isn’t a teleport, unless you have a dagger in your main hand right? If you are main handing a sword it’s pistol whip.

And for the 4th time. If you drop an aoe at your feet, no thief in their right mind will stick to you because the damage they take is too great. If your running froma theif you’re doing it wrong,

My 2cent how to improve stealth.

1.If thief miss,hit immune targets etc he lose his stealth.

2.If thief is in combat max stealth cap is 5sec but the 20sec cap is removed for thieves that are not in combat.

Because there is absolutely nothing stopping the thief to equip dagger/pistol with sword/dagger on another, hence why I mentioned pistol #3, because we are talking about backstab. After sword #2 they can switch weapon, if they use dagger/pistol + short bow they still gap closers and backstab. They are not mutually exclusive.

Builds which use of this? D/D, S/D + D/X, D/X + shortbow. Also, you “convinietly” left out shadowstep signet and steal and the sort.

Im sorry, but if you drop an AoE on your feet, lets say fire staf #2 (one of their hardest hitting that continually tick, as opposed to their 2+ secs windup spells which a thief can time) then at most it will hit them for 4k for one tick, which is all they need for f1>backstab to take 3.5k + 9k backstab (basically most if not all health of the ele). “oh but dodge” nope, dodging doesnt stop backstab and definitely doesnt help to get out of the AoE as you proposed, “oh but use a shield” still doesnt stop backstab, “blind” still doesnt stop backstab.

I sort of giggled at the idea of a Thief switching weapons. I don’t think I’ve ever seen it, besides a Thief going into Shortbow. That only worked once, when I was at 10% health when the Thief switched, and I still almost downed him.

I’d be tickled pink if I saw a D/X Thief switch to S/P or something mid-fight and switch up their approach. It’s too bad I literally haven’t ever seen it.

I’m not sure why a thief would run a weapon setup like that, but I guess it’s possible.

I didn’t “conveniently” leave out anything, I’m assuming by Shadowstep signet, you’re referring to infiltrators signet. It’s on a 30 second cooldown, which matches an untraited blink, and just a fraction less than lightning flash, which is a cantrip. So if you know your builds, you can reduce the cd on that, and make it apply boons.

Now I know what you will say, but you have to invest in a non offensive tree to get those bonuses or abilities,
Well a theif who runs infiltrators signet, has to sacrifice either shadow refuge, which we need to survive Shadowstep, which we need as our only condi removal (on a 50 second cooldown) or signet of shadows (movement speed increase) since we can’t pick that up anywhere else outside runes (traveller). All completely needed skills running a backstab or melee build.

Truth be told, I don’t really understand what you mean when you say spamable teleports. There aren’t any outside D/P’s shadow strike, which can’t be used defensively, so doesn’t constitute a “teleport” yes if you took all of them together you would have access to quite a few, but you wouldn’t be able to stealth on demand without blowing your heal either.

Steal is again, only offensively used, so doesn’t constitute a teleport, but a shadow step, it’s also on a 35 second cooldown. Regardless I thought the issue was backstab from stealth? These shadow steps have a lesser range than caster range, effectively meaning you can free cast before they can Shadowstep to you.

And sword teleport, doesn’t have backstab or really rely on stealth, so I don’t see the relevance of even discussing it. It’s a different build altogether that I’m yet to hear complains about.

I really don’t know what to tell you in regards to the ele. I run a glass D/D ele in tpvp all the time, and I don’t have huge issues. Do i occasionally get annihilated by a backstab theif from the back while engaged with another target, sure. I’m also not sure why you would run a staff berserker ele in pvp. You may argue, you should have the option, but by that logic, I should be able to run a purely short bow build to the same effect. It’s silly.

The staff is an aoe weapon. That’s what it’s designed for, much like the short bow, which is why you don’t get similar damage with it as you do with backstab or daggers.

Now firegrab? Different story.

Also, the idea isn’t to dodge a backstab, it’s to dodge the cloak and dagger.

Lastly static shield is amazing versus thieves, mist form can be used while stunned or incapacitated (again, thieves don’t open with backstab, they steal first, hit with mug (90% of the time) then cloak and dagger, then backstab. If it’s a pistol offhand, they drop a black powder and heart seeker through it, again. Its not instant, and not invisible. Thieves in Spvp or tpvp don’t heart seeker through black powder over and over, why waste the heart seeker leap damage, when you can do it at your targets feet.?

You can mistform while blinded too. In addition to swimming in your aoes.

Personally, if I’m aware, I have very little issues fighting thieves on my elementalist. Even as a glass cannon.

And for that allow me to deeply apologize, I tend to get hot with this and after cooling down a bit I realize the flaw in my statements. In my defense however, the first and second werent meant at you, although they are reproachable indeed, there is certain truth behind it. The third one wasnt in any sense of the word an offense and I still stand firm on it. Thieves are too self absorved. Perhaps Im too, like anyone with a strong case argument, but I cant help but feel this way when all I get back is; l2p, trait all your traits and utilites accordingly to thieves and thieves only.

Honestly people will always whine. (Im do not play thief just fyi)

But if you’re complaining about thieves,

you haven’t faced other people who use their classes so well.

Thieves are strong yes, but if you get 1 shot every time like 3 in a row, then that is not balanced.

But you don’t always get that scenario right? How bout learn to counter other classes. If you take pride in playing your class, Just do some theorycrafting or practice to get better.

Also the 13k backstabs? How often does that happen? If it happens 90% of the time then that is the time to whine.

As I have said before, you are already complaining now wait till you face people whoa are really good in using their classes.

Then I’m sure you’ll say Every class or mechanic associated with them is toxic.

So, I’m just gonna jump in an give my opinion. I recently decided to roll a thief for fun, after playing mostly mesmer in WvW and engi in tpvp. Here is my thoughts about my experience with thief:
1) Backstab isn’t as strong as people think (its similar imo to a zerker mesmer shatter). Often you have to really build for the damage of it, but you lose on lots of other utilities. A bit of ground AoE is a huge deterrent.
2) Using steal with dagger equipped, however is a really easy way to get a backstab. Go into a couple seconds of stealth, use steal. This will shadowstep you to the player, and place you behind them. Tap your backstab.
3) Stealth play is VERY forgiving to BAD play. What do you I mean by bad play? Spamming attacks with a block (i.e. engi shield), or with aegis, or evades up, etc. There is very little penalty for initiating an attack in stealth and missing. If an engi is using his block, you can KEEP hitting him in stealth, keep your stealth, and still get a hit off the moment the shield comes down. This is probably the biggest thing about stealth that needs to be changed. You see both thieves, and even PU mesmers alike, abusing this.

But really in the end, the problem isn’t in the thief profession. It’s in the mechanic that anet calls “stealth”, which is very forgiving to BAD play, for any profession that uses stealth. On top of that, hitting a player in stealth gives you no damage indicators (unless you happened to be watching your combat logs). If you happen to play a class with an auto attack that chains you can get a bit lucky, but not everyone has one (i.e. mesmer GS/staff). Damage as well won’t reveal a person in stealth. If anyone has problem playing against thieves, I’d recommend, if they can, to roll in and play a bit in normal spvp (since it’ll auto level you to 80) and see how the mechanics work. It REALLY helps.

I should apologize too. Truth be told a lot of my frustration isn’t even with you fortus, you accidentally got some of the splash damage from my frustration with eloquence.

Click on that guys name that view all his posts, seriously do it. If you can find one that isn’t immature, snarky, and designed to belittle the poster, I’d be stunned.

Regardless, I do feel thieves have counters, they aren’t as brainless and easy as people think. You are always one dodge away from death, when dealing with most classes

Do I feel there’s room for balance? Sure….they do hit hard, and in another thread I’ve even suggest changes to stealth detection myself.

But I can’t agree with a blanket statement that there are no counters, because I do it daily. Easy or not.

1) You are extremely late asking for Pro players. They left almost directly after launch.

2) The second most requested feature to be revised was stealth by…. low and behold, the pro players.

3) The Thief class has fine defenses without stealth even if the community chooses not to acknowledge them.

4) The problem with this game is the horrible stealth mechanic which has been untouched since second beta even though all the “pros” said it would be a joke to leave it in its current state. (hint: stealth is brokenly stupidly if you have half a brain).

ALL thieves counter eles. Telling me to auto attack spam and heal up is pointless. Also lf+eq is countered by 1 stunbreaker or evade. I dont think you play this class much.

D/D ele’s AOE autoattack (0.5 second cast) has 360 range… thief needs to, not only get behind you but also within 130 range to backstab (0.5 second cast)… you will hit the thief multiple times if they try to come in for a backstab. i’m not telling you to spam autoattack, i’m telling you to apply pressure and punish them for trying to get into 130 range… and that is one of the ways you can consider…

“Also lf+eq is countered by 1 stunbreaker or evade.” you have multiple stuns on multiple cooldowns while a thief will only bring 1 or 2 stunbreakers (on 50 or 40 second cooldowns). Most thieves only bring 1. Water 3 & 4, although not stuns, basically make it impossible for a thief to backstab you or followup with attacks for the duration of those skills.

The amount of time i play my ele is irrelevant to what i’m saying. (although I do play my ele alot because its crazy fun!) D/D eles are harder to fight on my thief than most other classes. Thieves are easier to handle on my D/D ele than most other classes.

Here’s a question: Why do they offer Berserker – or indeed collectively “glass” – amulets to everyone if it’s so written in stone that Thieves “deserve” to roll face over other glass players?

I think thieves have an advantage in glass vs glass duels but it’s hardly a face roll no?

Re: your other posts – I see alot of valid points that you bring up. Stealth does feel too overdone, especially in WvW. What do you think could be changed to alter the situation without killing the weaker thief builds? (e.g. d/d, p/p, power p/d)

If you’re a thief and you’re having problems fighting against a skull crack warrior, you really should review your own playstyle.

Yeah – for this, I get his by a backstab 1 out of around 6 times, so yeah, I don’t mind and yeah I somehow counter it. Even more so, I counter the damage, which the initial poster suggested, which should 1 shot me. Nope never in my life have I died faster than 10 seconds to a thief (With the exception when I was on low hp fighting someone else)

Kyon only mentioned the SA trait for the purposes of his argument so i felt no need to elaborate. Of course thieves have other sources of cleansing, as a matter of fact i run most of them when i roam. But it’s still easy to get overwhelmed.

Sorry, I should have elaborated when I said SA but Smekla and Black Teagan already elaborated it. I meant the “common builds that revolve around SA” which usually have decent amount of condi clears.

As for skull crack warriors, maybe I should have said D/P + SB specifically. That thief build had the advantages of stealth, blinds, and mobility against skull crack warriors who usually have GS + Mace/Shield.

That or I’ve probably watched Docmed and Caed make random warriors their playthings too many times.
