That said, I’m withholding judgments regarding increased ranger viability for the most part until the patch lands and things sift out….

Now, if some of those problems were looked at and addressed, I could definitely see the meta changing to include them. The problem is that they weren’t, and just giving the class more ranged damage potential likely will not be enough to warrant substantial demand or even their use.

they are already being used in GvG and ZvZ for piercing arrow assisting each other on enemy commanders.

I’ve yet to see a top-tier GvG/ZvZ guild look for rangers as viable DPS, even despite the benefits of piercing. It’s too vulnerable and provides too little utility.

Well i’ve been roaming around opn my new Longbow Zerker ranger, and it’s pretty awesome. The moment I see a thief out in the open, it’s a dead theif. Warriors are easily food and fnny thing is I’m able to catch GS/ S+X warriors who try to nikey their way out of the situation. It may not be that good in Spvp where you’re trying to cap and hold points, or zerging.in wvw, but solo roaming and PVE get a tasty buff from the changes coming :P

I’ve heard of it being used extremely rarely, and essentially as a one trick pony. I doubt it was a top tier GvG team but someone used it successfully on gank for one round, but had to trade it out the next round since their opponenet’s gank squad learned about it the previous round, and were able to fully nullfy the ranger before they could attempt to longbow gank a second time. So no, it will not be viable, which makes me sad, but balancing specifically for an unofficial game mode isn’t exactly one of Anet’s goals, even though their goals in general are questionable.

I also don’t see RF doing the same damage in 2 fewer seconds is going to dramatically shift the way things run now. Especially in PvP.

Exactly this! RF doesn’t kill you pre patch? Good, it wont kill you post patch.

Actually this isn’t true.

As it stands now, the skill takes too long to cast that hp/sec skills and regeneration can actually cause RF not to deal enough damage to kill someone. With the damage shifted to a subtantially smaller time frame, the amount of healing allowed within the time frame diminishes. Example being a thief in stealth with Shadow Rejuvenation or a healing signet warrior with regen, or a mixture with ele’s water attunement regen. Not to mention the possibilities of blasting water fields during the cast time, etc., which may cause RF to net too little damage per the time it takes to cast.

This also includes bursting through casting animations. Nobody’s saying the gross damage dealt to a target by RF in the time frame is increasing. It’s the fact the net amount of damage dealt by the skill compared to healing effects will do so.

We had JQ throwing this at us on BG last night. It was particularly effective in burning down our commander’s health very quickly, but it had some very specific stipulations for it to work.

-Many of the fights that it was happening in were easily 1.5-2:1, if we simply can’t push through the bigger hammer train, we can’t reach the back liners
-Our commander was a norn wielding two legendaries and a fractal capacitor. Even with the change to the cmd tag showing up in WvW names, it’s pretty easy to say “everyone target the norn with the Bifrost and the sparkles shooting out of his back.”

If you don’t have a solid meat shield and a very obvious target to Ctrl T, I can’t see it working nearly as well.
