Trick or Treat doors, WTH?
They have been somewhat less enjoyable than they were last year. Still the best place to do the door events is actually in the labyrinth cos they seem to be more stable in there.
So after trying to do the daily for completing the 5 door events I’m honestly a bit baffled at the design choices here.
First of all, what’s with the despawn timers? I had more doors disappear as I was running up to them than I actually opened.
Secondly, why does the daily have to be for completing five events that only have about a 1 in 5 chance of actually spawning? I opened a good 15 doors and only got 3 events before giving up on this one.
Finally could you give the “enter labyrinth” option an extra prompt or something, because I had to waste a lot of time and waypoint costs because of accidentally entering doors while I was trying to pick up the trick or treat bags.
Seriously, was just hoping for a bit of Halloween fun with my dailies this ended up not being worth my time and was not enjoyable in the least.
All good points. The worst is the “enter labyrinth” — massively annoying going to the labyrinth then laggy lions arch, then back to wherever you were before.
I was just talking to a guild member about this. It’s delightful.
Don’t support the Gem Shop, it’s that easy.
You have actually found doors that generate the event???
I have opened no fewer that 20 doors now, 3 of them spawned 1 enemy that didn’t give me a trick or treat bag, and didn’t count up the event. The rest just gave me a trick or treat bag (and didn’t tick up the event), they seem to all spawn and despawn in the same 30 seconds where I have actually managed to locate a small selection of doors, and every one of them just go to the boatman. I did the lunatic labyrinth and never found a door in there.
So far, while I had a bit of fun last year, this has been the most poorly prepped, biggest money sucking, unsatisfactory, and clunky awkward events and it’s only been going a day. I can’t say I’m enjoying this even in the slightest.
It seems to be faster to run with the zerg in the labyrinth for door events.
The doors seem a bit harder to figure out this year than last year. A hint for the Enter issue: Set your aoe loot key to something other than F. Tap that to loot after any fight you ever have. It will grab loot you didn’t even know was there, and will not proc any action with doors, npcs, rezzing, etc. I have mine on J.
Also take a quick moment to check that it doesn’t say “Enter” on your popup, because hitting F if it does is — as you noted — a one way trip to the Labyrinth and you don’t return to where you were, you get to LA instead. If you weren’t done in your zone, that’s annoying and costs WP money. Poor design but at least with some caution on the player’s part, along with never hitting F near a door unless you see “trick or treat” as the option, the surprise portal can be avoided

All good points and suggestions, I won’t discount that, but honestly – they claim these changes that were done in the balancing patch part up the update were “quality of life” changes, it seems that something that is going to be so “repetitive” would be easy to provide a simple popup like they do when you salvage a rare/exotic, etc. that simply says something like “do you want to enter the mad king’s realm”.
My big complaint about this whole event is how it feels half-sussed through. I don’t think they really thought through this whole event.
It’s the first day, but first impressions are “everything”.
You can just go into the labyrinth and do the door events with the zerg.
where exactly can you find these door events?

Some of us don’t want to be forced to run with a ZERG to do a holiday event. Zerg is WvW, shouldn’t be forced in PvE events. Unfortunately, you probably are right for that being the only way to do it, as I haven’t managed to get a PvE open world one to work properly.

I would prefer it to just be a PvE thing and not a WvW thing. Guess we’ll both just have to be disappointed.

The doors begin their despawn timer once someone else trick or treats them. If you’re looking to do the 50 door living story achievement I would recommend doing it in the Man King’s Labyrinth.
I finished this achievement in a couple of hours by just doing the events inside the labyrinth. They spawn pretty quickly, all doors in there are events and not other stuff, it’s a smaller area, and there’s a huge zerg to follow around. So I’d really recommend the Mad King’s Labyrinth for anyone trying to do the door achievements.
Just use the ones in Kessex hills instead of Queensdale

Ironically I was actually in Kessex hills when I was trying this.
Also they most certainly have a natural despawn timer separate of their open/closed status. All the doors that despawned as I ran up to them were very much closed, it wasn’t as though I was behind a group that was opening them all, there was hardly anyone in the area.
I did not know that they also appear inside the labyrinth though, so I will probably take that into account if this daily appears again, as the open world doors seem like a total crapshoot atm.

The ones with events do not despawn, they are just “used up.” If you see one on the map and it vanishes before you reach it, that means that other players reached it first, activated the event, cleared it, and thus the door left, its job completed.
I was doing this in Gendarran Fields, and spent about twenty minutes teleporting around the map, most of the doors were bag-droppers, but I managed 4/5, then I accidentally fell into one, and decided to stick around and do the labyrinth. Over the next couple hours I got about 26 doors, and TONS of loot. Nothing fantastic, mind you, mostly just 1/100000000th of one of those new recipes or whatever, but it was a lot of fun.
you spend complaining about it on the forums, you’d be

This happens to me a LOT and it is really annoying. Exiting the labyrinth ports me to LA instead of back where I was, so any loot I was going to pick up is long gone by the time I get back.

Totally agree with OP.. I am also stuck on 3/5 door events after like running around for an hour, only to miss a door, get no event from it or accidentally enter and end up in LA.
Doing them in in the Labyrinth might work, but it shouldn’t be the “only” option..

Zerg is a term used in both PvE and WvW. It happens any time you have a large group of players trying to achieve the same goal. There is a zerg for Tequatl events, for event chains, and for champion farming. You could probably do the door events in the labyrinth with just a few people, but it goes much faster when a larger group is there.
Gotta say that how these doors work is less than clear and quite an annoyance. The porting back to LA is a MAJOR inconvenience as it is FAR too easy to accidentally enter the door rather than loot nearby items.
Putting LOOT on a different key is a possible solution to this, but should NOT be necessary….kind of a sloppy design (just like the location of the loot chests and balloon travel being too close together on the QJ towers).
Fate is just the weight of circumstances
That’s the way that lady luck dances
I’d rather get my 50 doors in the open world than with the labyrinth zerg, but this seems designed to highly discourage that for no good reason. Went through at least 20 doors in Kessex, and only gained 2-3 door closes towards the achievement because the events are so uncommon. Had at least 5 more doors despawn right in front of me, as well.
I just want the achievement out of the way so I can do the next part of the story. These doors are a great example of the “boring stuff to get to the fun stuff” that we’re not supposed to have in this game.

I was a fan of last year’s ‘open world’ approach and was a bit sad during the first hour yesterday trying to figure out what to do. That quickly subsided and I think keeping it contained in the labyrinth has the upside of keeping it all organized. After I gave in and formed up with everyone, everything came together really quickly and I was able to get the big achievements done yesterday.
I did two dailies yesterday, two today. Two more tomorrow and I got the first meta and am ready for the second stage.
So not really sure what the answer is. There is a certain amount of charm to having these intermixed in the world. Jury is out for me.
