Error attempting to sell AAAAAAAH!!!!
Maybe because I don’t sell things at 900MPH but I never get this. It’s like trying to open a combination lock quickly. Too easy to overshoot forcing you to start again making it take just as long or longer than if you simply took your time.
So if you know selling item after item quickly will eventually cause that message, slow down. A little time versus what looks like a lot of annoyance and frustration.
RIP City of Heroes
It happens even if you sell 3s per item. Also happens more frequently if you’re selling the same thing over and over, which is unreasonable with the 250stack limit. If you have 2000 of an item, you’re bound to have this error.
The problem is there servers cant handle the traffic so they artificial limit it. They do the same thing with condition damage. I understand its a free to play game but they make millions and millions a month off the cash shop I think they could afford some better servers or more of them.
This game seriously need a bit of polish to it things like this would go a extremely long way making the community happier.

No way the server can’t handle such traffic. It’s for bot prevention. But added many trouble for legit players.

OK, that is really silly. I’m not trying to be antagonistic. But if the solution is “don’t sell massive stacks of stuff too quickly,” that’s no solution at all.
It seems to me like if you try to sell more than 10 things in a row you hit this and yes, it’s annoying as hell. I run into this after breaking down a full inventory after running champ trains…I hate it!
A good solution to this problem is before the error comes up the player has to type in a randomly generated code to continue. That way it will still work for bots and players wont be able to get the error message.

One CAPTCHA for 20 minutes of trouble-less trading, I can live with that.

Maybe it’s because I don’t sell off massive stacks of stuff but I do sell dozens of individual items at a time and I don’t simply choose high bid/low sell. I don’t sell off the inventory out in the field but at a TP contact, city or zone. The extra coin I make setting my sell prices offsets the 5 extra minutes of not plunging back out into the field for more loot. Actually most of my income comes from TP buying/salvaging and MF upconverting. Maybe if I was a dungeon runner or champ farmer I would feel different.
Also it can’t be a bot prevention mechanism because bots can be programmed to be patient. So this leads me to believe the problem lies with the browser/server front end of the TP and the TP DB and player DB. First rule of DB club is do everything in your power not to screw up the customer data in your database. If that means being so careful that the act of removing items from player inventory to the TP DB and making sure the link between the two DB is solid, so be it. And considering the TP is tracking 100s of thousands of items, many being added and removed within 24 hours and tracked between all the servers, both NA and EU, hate to see the index file at the end of a month.
That said are EU players more likely to see this? After all the EU has their own game servers and therefore I expect the player DB for them are also in the EU while the TP DB is in the US. If that’s the case could trans Atlantic delays contribute?

Actually, I was having this problem when I was simply click selling and not changing the price. Add a copper and it should go away, or at least it did for me.
Might be that it works for others too?

It’s the time it takes for you to type the different price that makes the difference. Sell 10 single items for the list price in a row and you’ll hit it on the 11th, change the price for each item each time and you won’t.
It seems as if ANet has reduced the wait time for this; maybe to make it less annoying?
I run into this error quite frequently after doing gathering runs, and recently it seems like I only have to wait 15-20s to continue selling, rather than the 30s-1m it used to be.
Supposedly this is to limit any one player putting more than their share of load on the server. I have no problem with this. The trouble is if you get the error, it extends the timer even more so if your impatient and click again to soon, you get to wait even longer. THAT is what annoys me so much about this. If they could just let the sale complete but let it take longer, or block your Sell button again UNTIL it’s ‘your turn’, that would be SO much better.
Better yet have a sell at offer queue you can dump your items into so you don’t have to stand around doing all that clicking AND getting penalized for it. Granted you may get far less (or even more) based on the market moving while your sales are going through, but that is a risk I bet many would take.
Wish it would go away.
Ever since launch (after they finally got the Trading Post up ). There is some apparent cap with how many posts you can have up at a time or something. Put the fastest sellers up first and it shouldn’t be much of a problem. Unless of course you are constantly putting up 20 legendaries at a time or something.
smack..Wut?…smack…smack…
Every theory we have for why it’s there always includes the phrase “this is the worst way to do it”.
anti-bot? nope. bots are currently able to list 20,000 items per day while humans can only do like 40 before we throw the computer across the room. better would be captcha or limit it one every 2 seconds.
server congestion? no limit on buying means you can buy 40 times as many things in the same time. selling is inherently slower than buying, so why would you limit the slower part but not the faster? buying and selling have to use approximately the same server resources. better would be limit it one every 2 seconds for buy and sell, also to increase the per-stack size to 10,000.
compared to this, a captcha every 30 min would be a blessing. I run into this 80% of the time I use the TP. selling crafting materials, 3000 items I had invested, crafted things, everyday items found from mobs, etc.. leveling a crafting profession is the worst. it takes like 30 min to level it, then another 30 just to sell the crafted items afterwards.

dont worry I had an error in buying, it caused the loss of hundreds of gold, Anet admitted it was their systems at fault in emails to me, and then did kitten all.
Dont trust the TP< its pants.
for one second i thought you wre trying to sell a mini called AAAAAAHHHHH….
in GW1 there is a mini called AAAAAAAAARRGHHH

Dude, you’re selling so fast, Mother Nature said ’Sllooooooowwww dowwwwwwwwnnnn"
“Error attempting to sell” is a sloppy, inelegant solution to gold selling. If that is indeed the purpose.
Nowhere has Anet stated that this feature was added to hinder gold selling or botting. Those reasons are speculation of players, and are not logical. It’s an error message, and seems like a bug.

Don’t think it’s a bug. Error message doesn’t appear out of nowhere. There can be error, but doesn’t mean it’ll always pop a message. And the fact that we don’t see the same “error” other than selling too fast, indicate that message is added specifically for that particular event, and that event is acknowledged by the devs in the 1st place.
After reviewing the string, it seems that the newly purchased skins(I just bought my first one yesterday) should be sellable. It gives the option to sell in TP, and is not account bound, but the “sell” button is not available to click. Am I miss-reading the posts, and the newly purchased skins can not be sold? The skin is called Dreamthistle Dagger Skin

I’m an impatient person that tries to sell stuff fast when it’s time to do so, so this really bugs me when it happens.
This is my #1 problem with the game right now.
I basically go out and explore and adventure my heart out and only stop when my bags are full – at which point I head to a trading post and sell everything.
I get “Error attempting to sell” after about the 5th item every, single, time.
Can you imagine how annoying this is when all of my bags are FULL of things to sell?
I would love to do a captcha just for 5mins of selling.
If anyone wants to try and argue that a captcha would break immersion – think about how immersion-breaking a giant error message is.
I would be interested in hearing any sort of .dev team comment on this “error.”
It is beyond irritating when you are out leveling a character and your bags fill up. You take the time to maximize your potential profits by listing the junk you’ve collected and after about 10 items you get the dreaded “Error Attempting to Sell”.
I’m almost convinced it is part of a vast conspiracy to get us to vendor things instead of list them.
And as it’s been mentioned time and time again if you all pause a moment instead off trying to sell everything in 10 seconds or less then this problem doesn’t come up. Take a moment, try picking a price that isn’t either of the two presented. Oh geez it’s now going to take you a whole minute or two to sell everything without getting that message and incurring the delay. Just relax, it’s not like you are working at a Chinese gold farm with a supervisor looking over your shoulder.

If I’m trying to play a game, non-playing functions like clearing inventory should be as fast and low impact as possible. The “wait around and dilly dally to avoid the error” work around is not an acceptable answer.
If I’m enjoying a day of market speculation, I’m not quickly blasting off sell listings at lightning speed and the error isn’t a problem. It’s when I’m actually busy doing things and have other people waiting on me that the error becomes a problem.
I agree, it is ridiculous. I’m going to have a terrible day when ascended armor is released and I spend a 24 hours trying to sell off all my mats because you can only sell like one stack per 10s after the first 6.
Please just add a captcha for the love of god.

Are you saying I should change the price just for the sake of changing it? Oh, and I never use the two preset prices.
Also if it only takes 1 or 2 or even 5 minutes to sell everything, that would be great. For example, 5s per item imo, is long already but I am not even sure if that’s error free. That means one minute you can only sell 12 items. I don’t know you, but I often have hundreds of items to sell.
No but it’s still my belief that the delay isn’t for anti-botting, so the captcha suggestion is pointless, but as a simple way to manage the rate of sell requests during peak hours. ANet probably believed that most players would sell off anything to the TP between encounters, hence the initial low number of items you can sell quickly, while the rest of your goods would have been field salvage into mats and deposited quickly into your bank or sold to a nearby vendor/heart.
And how do you have hundreds of items to sell? Did you expand your personal inventory to max with 20 slot bags? I barely get 50-60 items in an evening of play that aren’t mats that I redirect to the bank and they’re from hitting a couple of boss events.
But for me, my play style means I hit vendor/hearts periodically to sell junk, deposit mats, field salvage for luck and occasionally sell something to the TP but never for the “sell now” or “buy now” price. I need every copper so I check the range of “buy now” prices (do a buy more on the item) to see if the lowest one is currently a low spike due to an oversell at the former “sell now” price. I then price my item, post it and move to the next item or move along to my next event. My style works for me and I don’t get that message. Even when I’m selling a ton of runes/sigils from salvaging rares from playing the TP or promoting masterwork runes/sigils, the slight pause introduced by changing to last two digits of a price before posting is enough for me to avoid getting this message.
All I’m counseling is to slow up a bit and take a breather when dumping your loot on the TP. And maybe cut back on the caffeine and energy drinks a bit.
It can always be worse, try doing some simple maintenance on your parent’s single core Pentium 4 Dell. I can’t believe this was considered fast a one time.

It’s extremely irritating. I found salvaging/selling my loot and then jumping to a city to sell whats left can help. The sixty second load screen seems to help with the cooldown. :P

So do a themed captcha… that’s got potential.
It takes me way too long on a daily basis to sell material in the TP. I hate this error.
I think if I get 1g cash back everytime I get the error, I’ll probably have 100g each month
“I think if I get 1g cash back everytime I get the error, I’ll probably have 100g each month”
Way more than that…
If this really is for bot prevention, a captcha for a certain time limit of selling would be fantastic. I like to sell all my collectibles off at once too and it is quite frustrating.
One of the most annoying things in the game, if your big on trading and selling it’s a game breaker. (This “bug” has been posted several times before).
Second most annoying thing in the game……… ArenaNet not commenting on the things such as this “bug”.
They just tend to ignore us and hope we just give up and go away.
Well it’s still there, whatever it is, bot stopper, bug, server lag, call it whatever.
Some sort of clue to what this is from ArenaNet would be appreciated.
Just tell us what it is and we’ll all be satisfied…………………
this is really annoying, when im lvling an alt and want to empty my bags having to stop after 4-5 items is a real pain in the butt.
this is really puppy annoying, please Anet, I know you are better than this, come with a better solution!
