That will only alienate the portion of the population that wants gems but doesn’t want to spend real money on it.

This is a much smaller portion than those who want gold. (Basically, “those who want gold” is everyone, while “those who want gems but are unwilling to spend real money” is less than everyone.)

a.net wants to value their in game currency highly by setting a very low gem to gold conversion rate while they are playing oblivious to the fact that a precursor costs almost 900$ to acquire.

why do you keep saying this? Anet doesn’t set the gem→gold rate. the rate is set by players, though the mechanisms of buying gems with gold and gold with gems.

they didn’t factor it right. they set it initially low without taking consideration of inflation/purchasing power of gold. it’s not yet even self adjusting.

players make gold in game out of thin air and bltc valuing the gold at low with an almost fixed rate is an insult to the value of cash.

this is an overview of the system.

1.) Real money is used to buy gems which can be converted to gold
2.) Gems cannot be converted to real money and if we use legal terms and pathways (Illegal gold sellers don’t count), gold to gem has no monetary equivalency, thus it doesn’t matter if higher gold is required to convert it to gems.

Sure there should be one rate but two operating values like what we have now. i was wrong in assuming that there are two rates operating. but the initial value is too low.

i would like the conversion rate to be like 100 gems -> 2 gold and 4 gold -> 100 gems.

So my cash has a justifiable value and gems are also valuable in term of gold needed.

If the gem → gold rate is too low when looking at it through the lens of real money to in-game gold purchasing power (and I’m not sure that this is the case), then that is more likely a reflection on the desirability of gem store items compared to in-game items. (i.e. people prefer to spend gold in-game rather than in the gem store).

The exchange rate has been steadily rising since launch, and has at least doubled in the last month. How could this be considered a fixed rate?

they set it AT THE START OF THE GAME. what do you think the purchasing power of, well, anyone at 24hours into the game? and remember that there is only one rate, which just has about a 30% difference between the values. it is self-adjusting, because you can see the price shifts.

@Hippo “That will only alienate the portion of the population that wants gems but doesn’t want to spend real money on it.”

True, but consider that in general people who didn’t buy the game at launch will probably be less inclined to throw an additional $20 (for 2 bank slots and one bag slot) into the game immediately after purchase.

Though this could be ameliorated if Anet re-calibrated the actual $$ cost of those items in the store.

-Bags/bank space don’t in and of themselves provide any additional gameplay
-they’re just shy of necessity especially if you want to do any crafting or play more than one toon
-they’re expensive (overpriced, ahem) in terms of gems/gold/$$.

I do think that design will discourage many new players.
