To put it politely: Thinking that the gem to gold ratio and vice versa stays untouched by Anet is rather naive.

OK everyone. Listen up. There are some great items in the Gem Shop and you need them NOW! So get out your credit cards and start buying up Gems. You know you want to!!

That won’t affect the Gold -> Gem price. If someone buys $10 worth of gems (800 gems) and spends them in the cash shop (for say, an extra character slot), that doesn’t put any Gems into the economy, so the gold price would not be affected. It’s only when someone buys Gems and converts them to gold that the Gems are added to the Exchange.

The answer depends on the tuning frequency of your tin foil hat multiplied by the gullibility factor of the posters above and below you…..it’s a simple equation but requires multi-variable integral substitution and dimensional analysis to fully appreciate the illogical nature of being completely false and incorrect for the reasons that have been previously stated.

I thought the gems to gold and gold to gems exchange rate was set by John Smith? Wasn’t he hired in to determine what the rates are???

No.

  1. ANet seeded the gem market with an initial supply of gems. Since then, any new gems in the market were added by players spending cash: dollars, euros, pound sterling.
  2. Smith was hired to manage the entire in-game economy — intervening in a single market to affect a single issue of concern to a subset of players would be bad for the economy as a whole.

Keep in mind that a high gold:gem ratio is only bad for some people: people like me who don’t spend cash ever. It’s very good for those who buy gems regularly, especially new players who spent US$25 on the game instead of the US$80 I spent originally. If they use their US$55 today, they’ll be able to start off with a nice pot of gold, even compared to the seemingly low prices we saw when the TP mechanics stabilized (about 10 days after headstart).

So it rewards player that support keeping the game servers powered up (those that buy Gems). Funny how that works….almost if by design….hmmmm.
