Have to agree with OP here – CS farming nets and EASY 5g/h.

However – i ALWAYS open bags rather than selling them, 1 powerful blood from a bag = 30s or 13 bags(if sold on TP)

Giants eyes drops from bags too that sell for 60s a piece so it really is a no brainer.

It’s really a gamble like anything else, though. I’ve been selling them as it’s good, consistent cash, but last night I decided to open 1g worth (about 40 bags), and it was all Tier 5. An unlucky break of RNG, sure, but I think I’ll stick to selling them after that – it’s just more reliable.

Yeah very true. Sell them for guarunteed money or open them at the risk of larger profits.

However even the T5 crafting materials sell for 2s so that’d net you at least 80s from 40 bags. Unless you mean you got silk and hardened leather sections :P

I haven’t really kept a record of which way is best to be honest but last night out of 50 bags i ended up with 3 giants eyes, 3 power bloods, 4 powerful venom sacs and an array of other mats like Gossamer and and T5 fine crafting materials.

Whichever works for you mate but it may be worth a gamble once in a while

You should stop assuming that everybody gets the same drop, specially since we now have to confirmation from Colin that the loot tables where not working as intended. If everybody could make 6g/h farming Orr, my server would be full of people with legendaries…

Umm. . .you sure about that? About 13 hours before your post, ColinJohanson (I assume this is who you mean) posted the following:

After reading reports in this thread, we spent more time investigating our rewards system. As I mentioned a few weeks ago, we verified that all loot tables are indeed working correctly in the game. Since then, we continued receiving reports that there seemed to be an issue, so we extended our search to all systems that created opportunities for you to get items from loot tables. Here we found an issue that we were able to verify was consistent across everyone who reported problems:

The rules by which you qualify for credit for an event or for experience when killing a mob are different rules than those used to help determine if you qualify for loot. Some of these were set up to be unintentionally restrictive, and as such you could kill a creature with a lot of health (this was most noticeable on champions) and not qualify for loot, despite qualifying for all other credit.

For the February Flame & Frost: The Gathering Storm release we will be repairing this issue to ensure more players are capable of earning loot credit for kills. This should fix the issue such that you got credit for killing a champion, but received no loot from it. Once fixed, all champion mobs will correctly always drop 1 blue or better loot item, and all veterans will have a chance of dropping loot better than regular mobs as outlined in the November release. Please note, it is still possible to kill a creature and not do enough damage to qualify for loot (which is the only way you won’t get loot for a champion), it is also still possible for veterans to not drop loot at all, since they simply have better odds of dropping loot than normal creatures but no guaranteed drops.

On top of this, we’re also updating some of the loot in various areas of the game for the February release that should make specific areas more rewarding. We’ll cover this is in detail with the February release notes.

Thanks very much for all your feedback and reports, that information has proved incredibly useful!

[Emphasis added]

Now, before you respond, yes, the next section after the part I bolded does say that there were problems reported, and that Anet was able to track down an issue. That issue, though, is that event completion is different from qualifying for loot; which is separate from the loot tables working properly. Based on his post, I would say that about 6g an hour is entirely reasonable, given certain population sizes/practices.

Just like to repeat the note that the vast majority of profit from pent/shelt comes from blues and whites. In Jiro’s examples (discounting exotics as Jiro did not include those in the 6g/hr), roughly half of the earnings came from either coin/vendor trash loot or heavy moldy bags. Another 20% or so came from fine crafting materials. Only about 20% came from rares. Salvage materials (white), unid dye (white), and rounding error accounted for the remaining 10%. Those 3 hours ended up netting 3.25g/hr in moldy bags and trash alone.

This is my experience as well. If I’m in a party and we’re getting good tagging, 3g from the bags, vendor trash, and t5 mats is about right.

All DR seems to do is diminish your chances at getting the good stuff it seems. Rares and T6 mats. Maybe unid dyes but hard to tell with those. Like the opposite of magic find. In fact I don’t bother running MF at all while running these events anymore based on this assumption and it seems to bear out. I get the same amount of stuff whether I’m wearing MF or not after I’ve been running pen/shelt for a bit.

4g an hour while getting nothing good at all for drops is what I’d consider average for the place if you’ve got good mob tagging going. Less if pen and shelt happen to go off at the same time, though that can usually be made up for by hitting Plinx at some point without missing anything.

If someone’s not getting at least 2g an hour there then one or more of the following is true:

1. Not in a party.

2. Party is scattered/using lots of single target attacks/poor placement of attacks.

3. The player themself is not tagging enough mobs, due to weapon choice, player skill, poor placement relative to mob spawns, or a combination.

4. Player is periodically missing pen or shelt events due to not paying attention to map, going AFK too much etc.

5. So many players there that it’s hard to tag mobs before they die. There’s actually quite a few servers where this is the case in the evening. Guest to a lower pop server for your pen/shelt session if this is the case. 20 players around is good. 60 players around means you need to guest elsewhere.

I call into question people CONSISTENTLY making 6g an hour there. My drop quality doesn’t regularly coincide with that, but that could be an issue with varying DR or more likely the issue they’ve pinpointed with tagging getting exp but not loot based on certain conditions (which is apparently going to be fixed). So it’s not much of a stretch.
