Hmm, glad to see this thread is still going strong! Just thought I’d share the fact that I decided to reroll my guardian into a female charr myself.

Behold, Rayn Brightclaw!

I am a female player.
I have a character of each race and each profession. All are female except one male Asuran.
My lady Charr, Mala Searsoul, is a Guardian.
For my husband, he has made all human males, and one Norn because of Norn males have a hairstyle that he wanted for the character.

I think that first, people will go with what is familiar. It’s comfortable and when it comes to enjoying ourselves, no one wants to feel awkward.
For those of us that played GW1, the Charr are a sore point. I like the idea that there was a different faction that attacked humanity, but when you go to the Charr homelands, formerly Humanity’s Homeland, there are ghosts bent on revenge trying to reclaim their home. The music, imagery and ruins make it solemn and bittersweet.
Lastly, Charr society and the industrial war machine will not appeal to everyone.

What made the idea of playing a female Charr appealing for me was exploring the part of the society we were not able to see in GW1. A race not bound by gender roles, but strength of character. Character designers that made a excellent decision not to make overly sexual dimorphic pin-up gals of the female Charr, but recognizable subtle differences. The sort of differences Charr would notice, but other races would overlook.
Another favorite reason based on what I have heard from NPC children.
The kids behind the Trader’s Forum in Lion’s Arch. A random conversation on the Labyrinthine Cliffs between a soldier and child. A cub in Smokestead asked my Sylvari if she tasted like meat or a plant.
I also think at some point, Charr players have had or have a cat in their home that may be serving as a inspiration.

I have some issues with my opinion on armor and the other minor details, but I like Mala and all the other creative folks that don the guise of female Charr when they play.

My femcharr War that is level 80 I think Mar is a kitten! I really like female charr and I think Anet’s design to give them proper sexual dimorphism was great. I have 3 others but they’re all low level. I think the charr armor design could have been given a lot more thought though. I was a bit disappointed in that aspect.

When I chose my Charr character, I thoroughly inspected both male and female before making my choice. I went female.

I am a female player. I do make male characters (my ranger is male…sexy sword anyone? Oh yeah….he’s purely eye-candy.) If guys can do it why can’t girls….Anyway….back on topic.

I enjoy the fact that the female Charr have this ferociousness to them. Honestly, most of the male Charr I see, look like kicked puppy dogs. (This could be my ferociousness talking)

I do have some issues with the armours. However, I don’t think traditional female(aka girly) armours would be appropriated for a Charr, because lets face it. If I’m looking for a male mate (sticks tail in the air) he’s probably gonna think it’s more sexy if I can handle his bazooka, then if I can um, feed six kits at the same time, if you catch my drift. Not to mention, unlike humans…he’s been weaned, so skimpiness isn’t necessary. BTW, I meant the real bazooka, as in goes boom and blows the opposition to smitherines. :P

I might add as an ending note, that Charr was the last race I chose. HOWEVER, this was NOT due to the male, or female models, nor the crappy armour selection (frankly I pretty much hate medium armour on MOST races). It was because I play games to relax, and wind down, and the Charr are a very conflicted society. All that fighting put me on edge by default because I want to BE my character when in game. I’ve sense gotten over this (to an extent) and don’t really have issues playing her. However if I’m already kind of stressed, she’s NOT the first I’ll go do. So it does make for slow going on her as a character, since the story lines are very important to me.

The charr have the best humor of the game like the Asura.

Normally people tend to be humans who resemble themselves or are idealized.

The problem is the aesthetic.

Personalmente me gusta mucho que las charr sean asi, si no, no tendria ninguna gracia.

A long while back, I read the Chanur series by C.J. Cherryh.
Revisiting the story gave me the idea of the type of female I would hope my Charr lady to be. A lot of swagger and guile. It’s worth the read if you have the time…

People are used to picking male on beast races, because females are often poorly designed. In Gw2, the females look awesome, but people are still going to pick what they’re used to first.
I think that, with time, female charr would grow much more popular. To an extent, they have. However, what prevents it is exactly what you said—charr in general are unpopular. They have too many problems with armor, and female charr have it the worst. Shoulder pieces are scaled to fit male shoulders (and they still float), so with female shoulders, the float is 10X worse because they’re smaller

Yeah but considering the character creation is limited… by the time you get to 8 male charr, your ability to create a unique-looking character will have died yesterday. If you make a 9th male charr, you’re just gonna get another clone of your past 8 characters. Make a female, and you have a whole new set of character creation options. I mean just look at Rednik (no offense, Rednik XD) 8 characters of the same race/gender, they all have the same look & feel lol

Thinnest body type + the face with the underbite + bright orange eyes would give you a different aesthetic, so if you go male again that’s my tip.

I could argue on the voice acting of the female charr, but I can also see how would be a really hard voice to pull off. They can’t sound too deep to be confused with males, and I think making their voices higher pitched and a different inflection might have made them sound too sinister.

I play a male charr, but the female models look more cat-like to me. When I see male charr, I don’t see cats, I see Beast from Disney’s Beauty and the Beast haha

Well I’m a female player and 5 of my 7 characters are female and one of them is my beloved female Charr who’s a mesmer. She was the first character I created and thus I love her deeply! The German female Charr voice fits her perfectly in my opinion, don’t really know about the original English voice though.
I love them and thus another female Charr (thief) is about to follow. They can be really beautiful and I just love looking at them when they walk on all 4 legs.

I’ve honestly never counted them. Most of my charr characters are female though, as I find their looks and voice less over-the-top.

I agree on the looks. The charr females are a fantastic example for well designed “beast people” while most of the male options seem designed to try way too hard in the “LOOK AT ME! I’M MEAN AND SCARY!” department.

It’s kind of interesting to me that this has come up quite a few times. It hadn’t even occured to me before, but, yeah, really. I mean, I have a Charr character. He’s an Engineer called “Mister Chargue”, and he’s as big and as loud as possible, because I just sort of assumed that that’s what you make a Charr character for. I hadn’t even considered that female Charr served as a viable alternative if you did not want to be obnoxiously big and loud, but that would make sense.

Oh, I DO want “big and loud” all right. :p My charrior is max-bulk (but not max-size because of the literally nauseating camera issues in this game) and I just adore looking at her. I wish the female charr voice was deeper, snarlier. The thing is that while some of the female charr are a bit too “cute”, many of the males are just grotesquely deformed. When someone’s teeth are a tangled mess that by rights should mutilate half his own darn face even when only breathing, nevermind talking or eating, I don’t think “ooh, wicked!” — I point and laugh and shake my head. That is what I meant by “trying to hard to be mean and scary”, and why I like the female tiger-like and lioness-like faces best of all charr options for either gender. they’re plenty badarse/bestial while also being “realistic” in terms of not getting in the way of their own survival.

I have the same reaction to over-the-top “cool” armor and weapons as well as heavily sexualized characters and skimpy gear. The harder they try, the more attention they try to draw to it, the more it backfires.

My two boys are the tallest available, my girl is medium sized. But I never liked those huge fangs you could make, so mine are in proportion to their face. Their mouths can close without hurting themselves…

After to males (Ranger and Elementalist), I made my warrior female.

I am a kind of role player (I do think up stories for each of my characters, but don’t always stay in my role) which is why my other two charr are boys.
But my warrior, I wanted to be somebody who had to fight for her place in the group. And females are still not accepted everywhere in the Charr society.

I did like my warrior so much, I even gave her exotic armour at lvl15… (transmuted back to lvl15…) And her weapons are Mystic.

I’m a new player who right away was attracted to the female charr for their looks. I love the way the females look like big cats like tigers, leopards, lions, and jaguars. They also look like cute house cats, but I prefer the fearsome big cat look. It also appears they are a mix of hyena too due to their strong necks and hunched over look. So I love the way the female charr looks like a crossbreed between a big cat and a hyena! it looks so powerful.

Also I am a female player so it just adds to the many female players that love the design of the female charr.
