How do you even get those Shoulderpads? I didn’t join until the Lost Shores thing, so…
After having purchased the T1 medium set for my Engineer, I have to say – I rather really like the Charr cultural sets. The heavy stuff is great, imo. While the T2 and T3 Medium look more suited for thief/rangers, I’m pleasantly surprised by how great my Engineer looks in T1 cultural, representing Iron Legion.
I just picked up T1 cloth for my Mesmer Charr gal, and it’s probably my least favorite T1 so far – mostly because I can’t stand how big the shoulderpads are. I’ve switched the shoulders for something I like more… But I also found a rather annoying bug.
There’s a pretty large gap in my Mesmer’s midsection while wearing the T1 Invoker’s set. It’s glaringly obvious while running upright, as I can see daylight and terrain through my own body… The gap grows and shrinks as I run, in a rather disturbing fashion.
I’ve made a post in the bug reporting armor sticky already, but take a look for yourself… Honestly, incredibly disappointed by this, as it just looks plain silly. Made a quick youtube video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WK19d5uodLw

They were available randomly from Black Lion Chests / Mad King Chests during the Halloween event. Of course, that event being long over, they’re unavailable through that method now.
You can buy them from the Trading Post though. Just search “Deathly” on the TP and you’ll get a list of all of the available shoulder items. Look for the ones called “Shoulderpads” as those are the ones which apply to medium armor (Mantle is light and Pauldron is heavy). There are 3 different styles, the normal Deathly Shoulders are a typical skull, the Avian is a bird skull, and the Bull is cow skull with horns.
Luckily there’s a fairly good amount of them floating around and they don’t seem very popular (I think I’ve seen like 1 other person other than myself using any of them) so the price isn’t too ridiculous. As I’m writing this post, the Bull and Avian Shoulderpads are both under 40s. The normal Deathly Shoulderpads are a fair bit more (at 1g 50s) but still not that insane considering they’re technically unattainable now. Though they are just skins, they have no stats and aren’t wearable on their own, and you just double click them to “apply” the appearence to another item (like a free transmutation).
I went ahead and grabbed the item codes for these things if you want to preview them in-game. Just paste the code into the chat box, hit enter, and then right click the blue [] in the chat and hit preview.

Thanks for the info Electro. I went with the Deathly Avian Shoulderpads, since they look the most natural with the outfit I’m going for. Said outfit preview is attached.
To be honest, while a lot of the charr armour does feel like it was simply transplanted from one of the humanoid models, there are still plenty of great pieces to work with. It really just takes a bit of work. And, as always in GW2, the greatest plan is an epic bit of mix and match.
Take my charr warrior. His main role is leading from the back with his rifle, and so I’ve gone for a sniper-style armour set for him.
I still haven’t chosen a pair of shoes, as there’s a few nice ones to choose from.
I went for the Vigil leggings and the Pit Fighter’s chest piece, as I like the lighter, leather style.
I love the Arah armguards and shoulders, really think they suit a “gunner” style.
It’s quite sad that the Cultural armour costs so much, as the Tier 3 helm is literally the only headpiece in the entire game that I think suits charr at all.
While there’s still plenty of pieces of armour that do suit the charr body, the helms really have been done awfully. It’s like they haven’t taken the difference between a human’s head and a charr at all; every helm that isn’t a “shell” design just looks like a skullcap or something.
Note to Arena.net: the charr have necks! Necks need protecting too!

Woah, what is that chestpiece??

That’s the tier 3 medium cultural armor for Charr.
