If I forge say a Quiver of a thousand arrows, and transfer my wings skin to it, when I infuse it, will I lose the wings skin?

Yes, you will get a quiver skin back, thus losing the wings.

So I should buy two splitters, one to strip the wings off the exotic back pack they are on now and another to strip them off the quiver? Will the exotic back piece go back to account bound after I strip the wings so another character can use it?

A splitter and a transmutation crystal. Split the back piece, the wings that come back will come back either as a skin or a normal statless back piece (it depends, I’m not sure what it depends on). Infuse the quiver, either reskin it with the wings or transmute the wings.

Does the original back piece come back as well? Is it still soul bound?

Okay so let me try to understand the situation:

You have an exotic back piece that is skinned with the dragon wings. You want to make and skin an ascended quiver with those wings. Then, you eventuLly want to infuse that ascended quiver.

Use a transmutation splitter; upgrade, back piece, and skin (or statless back piece skin). Back piece and skin is soulbound.

If you wish to skin the new quiver, you can either skin it, or use a transmutation crystal to transmute the back piece looks onto the ascended quiver. If you wish to then infuse the quiver, you can use a splitter to get the skin back, infuse quiver, and rinse and repeat the previous process.

Is this what you need?

OK, so everything out of the splitter is soulbound, that was my question. I wanted to let another character use the exotic back piece as the current character would not need it having the ascended back piece (and someday infused) instead.

That means I should just transmute the quiver with the winged exotic for now, then split the wings off BEFORE I infuse it. I save some gems but lose the exotic, which is useless anyway unless I am looking to change back piece stats.

This is all accurate.

However, if you have a jewel in your back piece, I’m pretty sure that if it’s normally an unbound upgrade, it will be unbound. So you can keep it or sell it.

I’d suggest infusing your backpack BEFORE applying a skin. It will save you a lot in the end.

That’s what I do. 250 Globs are nothing if you salvage all rares.

Though the process of splitting the backpack BEFORE upgrading it works too. It’s just an additional expense.

Wait, what? If I have an Ascended weapon with a skin on it and then I infuse that weapon, I’ll lose the skin?

The only thing that can be infused that has skins is backpacks currently, so weapon skins don’t have to be worried about.

Yes.

Wow. Is there a reason for this? Do you get a warning that your skin will be wiped?

Doesn’t this pretty much discourage people from putting skins on their gear and thus causes fewer skins to be sold in the gemstore?

… It’s just for fractal back pieces…. It’s not all that huge. The only back pieces in hype gem store are the quaggan backpacks, charr backpacks, and such…. It increases the amount bought due to splitters and stones and stuff.
