Q:

What is the point of crafting? Why don’t you just by the items in trader for a small price? Could someone please list the advantages of crafting?

Thank You!

Since the Ascended Weapons update, crafting lets you create ascended weapons. Since these are account bound once you make them, you cannot buy/sell them on TP so crafting is the most reliable way of obtaining Ascended weapons. Ascended weapons do sometimes drop from monsters but those are also account bound and are very rare.

Ascended armor will probably be the same when it is introduced sometime later this year.

Profiting from crafting is actually quite hard since it can be expensive to level up if you buy materials or time consuming to farm materials. In some cases, the raw materials may cost more than what you have crafted.

Powerleveling low-level characters is one reason, although it’s less cost-effective now than it used to be, and I wouldn’t particularly recommend it.

This isn’t going to apply to the majority of people, but if you want anything made with Charged Quartz (Celestial stats,) you’re going to have to craft it yourself, since it’s account bound. Of the top of my head, it’s mostly Quartz stuff and Ascended materials/weapons that you’ll need to craft yourself, since most other crafted items are tradeable.

I don’t doubt that some people make a profit from crafting, but, personally, I don’t know the market nearly well enough to figure it out, and I’m not nearly interested enough to make it something I want to pursue. But, hey, everyone’s got a hobby.

You can level with the XP, craft for profit, craft for yourself at a discounted price Vs. the TP, refine materials (some times those sell for more), and craft ascended gear.

Here are a couple of things that may help you:

http://www.gw2spidy.com/ (look at the crafting area to see where you can profit… and you can use it to see if it’s better to craft yourself Vs. buy something you need)

http://gw2crafts.net/ (crafting guide updated hourly so you can get it to 400/450/500 for the least amount of gold)

If you’re crafting to level you can get 58 levels out of it. If you have a birthday/achievement 1-20 scroll that becomes 78 if you pop it before crafting. Still not as good as it used to be, but not bad.

Sweet rain of golden coins, Aberrant, that crafting guide is much better than the one I’ve been using. Into my bookmarks it goes!
