Did you make a joke about spiking Scarlet? Well, did you just kill 20 skritt that were just hanging out in their little cave minding their own business?

It was self defense dude. I just walked in the cave, exploring, and suddenly 20 evil scritts attked me. I had no choice, but to kill them!

You were just “trespassed” (a.k.a. exploring) in their home/cave and they attack the trespasser or you were just “Grave robbing” (a.k.a. exploring) in their ancestral burial ground when tribe warriors attacked the trespasser. You know all those totems you ignore or break as you run through the area, these are warnings that you are in/on somebody else’s house/cemetery/land. You kill them all and claim it was self-defense? Good thing you didn’t make a joke about this; that makes this “self-defense” okay…

By not talking about the blood on your hands does not make them any less bloody.

And I can understand when you make a joke about the foe you just vanquished, it unsettles you. Is it because it brings attention to the murder and pillaging your “hero” regularly engages in and justifies, or because it belittles the violent accomplishments you have undertaken?

I came to talk to them! It was diplomatic mission! I tried my best to explain, that all tyrian races have to join forces in fighting the dragon. But this grawl didnt listen. They was all evil and jumping on me! I tried again and again…my hp was rly low…and this left me with no other choice, but to kill them! Its them or me, after all. Guess, for their own survival, they should learn to talk first, and to attk later.

Scarlet may have been mentally insane, but we are not cellibrating the death of a mentally insane person, we are not happy because someone who was not right in her mind is no longer with us, we are cellebrating the death of a mass murderer, cellebrating the end of her destruction and slaughter. if you look at history, the deaths and demise of mass murders has always been celebrated, and probablly always will be. and to an extent, its neccisary, people need to let off steam, to express themselves, its the only way we can stand back up after falling down. And no, I don’t feel pitty for her, prior to her insanity, she was warned to tred carefully by some, to stop entirely by others, she knew what she was getting into, but she continued onwards regardless. she chose her path, chose to throw away her sanity, and thus by all means, she is a fool, and deserves to be ridiculed.

I get that Scarlet was the villain, but I felt horrible listening to Marjory and the others joke about her death.

Really? Haha at least you felt something, I nearly dozed off. One of the most boring cutscenes I ever witnessed. The only single intelligent and somewhat interesting line came from the player character, about Scarlet disturbing the magic flow to the dragons or something like that. All the rest could have been summed with ‘blah blah blah’.

I hope next story arc will get some serious writers, better acting, interesting characters, and not another clown as a main villain. I mean Scarlet could come straight from Power Rangers

I get that Scarlet was the villain, but I felt horrible listening to Marjory and the others joke about her death.

Previous LS updates established that she’s been driven crazy by some external force that she encountered in the Eternal Alchemy and could no longer mentally fight it. We should pity her or mourn for those she’s killed, not make childish jokes about what it felt like to deliver the death blow.

Not to be rude here, but I’m genuinely curious – do dialogue ideas get checked before they are added? If so, did no one suggest that joking about killing a mentally unstable character might be in poor taste?

exactly, something drove her crazy by invading her nightmares and she fought to control it. Eventually it consumed her. Instead of trying to help her fight back we drive a spear through her broken body then laugh about it over drinks. Yip – we’re not so nice.

Well, we never really got a chance to help her in the first place now did we? She went down fighting, we could never get near her. Besides, if what came over her was similar to the other dragons’ corruption, there was no way back for her anyway. In a way, we saved her from a life of being enslaved to Mordremoth.

I get where you’re coming from OP but I honestly just see this as another example of the confused tone that this game has. It so often flops between cartoon Disney “ding dong the witch is dead” and something resembling a more mature approach to fantasy. It does leave the story feeling a little bit disjointed at times.

Although I honestly don’t think Anet’s writing has done Brahm, Rox, Kasmeer and Jory much justice as characters. By the end of LS1 I consider them to be quite reactionary and rather unintelligent individuals. I’d rather it was just my character and Taimi in LS2. At least Taimi seemed interested in understanding Scarlet. All the other characters basically reacted like Power Rangers.

You’re right, we never really did get a chance and by the time we reached the final so-called climatic scene it was a bit too late. But when you break it down like the OP did. She wasn’t in control, and if YOU were in the same situation and something drove YOU insane and then a bunch of stupid adventurers aka Marjory and her ruthless band of cutthroats gun you down. I’m sure you would think “Hey that’s not fair, I wasn’t in complete control of my actions – something made me like this”

anyway the whole Living Story was a disaster. It has so many holes in it. I really just want it to be forgotten.

I laughed at this. One of my favourite Mad King jokes is “How do you survive a dragon? Run faster than Snaff”.

But I get where the OP’s coming from, the only choices you get is to make the whole thing seem light hearted. It just doesn’t fit the image some people have of their character. My guardian for example would, in my opinion, never make such a remark. Not out of respect for Scarlet, but out of respect for all the people who’ve died.

It’s not about the jokes being offensive to use players, it’s about them being offensive within the game world. Scarlet killed thousands of people and you’re cracking jokes about the whole thing. It’s a case of “too soon” and that makes it feel forced and out of place with some PC’s.

My Mesmer on the other hand, would have picked all three options at once if that had been possible.

If you are immersed enough to feel sorrow for Scarlet, you should also remember that she has killed MANY people in LA. There’s a nice memorial set up now in case you forgot. Scarlet made a choice, kill many, and had to pay the price. The jokes at the end are the result of intense stress and is a coping mechanic. If you don’t believe me, look at soldiers in post war situations, EMR’s and police officers after difficult situations. They will sing songs, joke and do all sorts of things to cope with what they saw (many are off colored songs about that situation, and jokes that are less than ideal for the experience).

Whole bar scene, was to find some form of feel of victory, since everyone heard the dragon scream when it awoke.
You win, but then you hear something very bad has still awoken, ofcourse you squeeze some jokes.
Also since 2 of your comrades almost died, but thankfully left with light lacerations, a broken leg and some broken ribs.

About feeling for person who were forcefully put into their place, it depends on alot of things.
Even if we found out that Scarlet was slowly driven mad with endless whispering from the dragon, it’s still hard not to dehumanize her, as she ended up killing thousands.
People can go mad, no matter what type of person you are, but actions pretty much dictates the reaction of others.

However, we also found out that since Scarlet’s campaing of death, destruction and awakening of a dragon, there is now circulating extreme opinions towards whole sylvari race, by the NPCs, who are not really seen saying their insults and fears in person yet,
but from few survivors in the refugee camps exclaiming how people have started judging sylvari race according to Scarlet’s actions, not by the good done by the rest of the sylvari race.

But then we have the category of ones who were forced to do it,
and those who are not forced into doing it and tend to judge the other category.
Would propably put Army and Citizens into those categories.
Even if members of army do things not considered human, some are actually forced to that, if the result is either hundreds more dead and enemy slipping away to plan their next act of mass murder or enemy along with civilians they used as meat shield.
Because of the bad things done by few bad people in army, Citizens tend to judge army as a evil organization, regardless if there are more members of the army that go by the book and follow the laws of humanity

Humans always have bad habit of painting everything black and white, some do learn that following such idea will make them very inhumane,
as followers of black and white tend to dehumanize some societies because of horrors done by 1 or more person of that society

The bitter irony is that extremely bad and inhuman people come from any ethinicity, society and etc.
If in GW examples, White mantle, Bandits, Nightmare court, Inquest, Flame Legion, Separatists, Renegades, Mursaat, Pirates, etc.
Do note some organizations are multi-racial…

I’m a casual PvE adventurer, I enjoy combat, adventure and helping, but not farming.
I rarely do PvP or Hard PvE, unless it’s organized.

The main thing is that the options presented totally strip any and all agency from the player on how they present their character.

Some of us see the dialogue as being in poor taste/asinine/etc and wish they had another set of choices.

One of the key points to immersion is maintaining player agency. The dialogue options presented failed that miserably. Would have been better with the silent protagonist treatment where we could fill in the blanks on our own.

Actually the fact that this is fiction matters more than anything.. I didn’t go out yesterday and throw grenades at my enemies, or chop down a tree for crafting materials. I didn’t throw 4 random things down a well and hope I get something better back. this is a GAME, we do things in the game we would never do in real life. That’s the point. My words don’t hurt scarlet because she never existed. How about this, if my words hurt this fake plant-person’s fake feelings, I’ll pay some fake money so a fake psychiatrist can make them feel fake better. I’ll even write a fake apology letter.

I didn’t read this whole thread so this has probably already been brought up but I gotta ask, how awesome must your life be that something like this annoys you? a few thousand years ago people worried about getting eaten by a saber tooth cat, or finding food. A few hundred years ago people worried about dying from the plague or giving birth to 9 kid sbut only 2 surviving. Our grandparents had World Wars to worry about. But some of you worry because a fictional character isn’t sensitive to the death of an evil fictional character. You must have the most problem free life ever. Good on you.

If you really want to moralise it, think of it as her choice of actions leading to the fightback by the adventurers and the people. She had Tyria on the back foot the whole time and ultimately it wasn’t about morality or lack there of. It was doing the necessary unless Anet had chosen to grant us the ability to take her side (now that would indeed have made things interesting). The actions of my characters pretty much sum up the way I would have ended it. Shoved a knife in her chest and get ready for the next fight. A few jokes at her expense is a good way to blow off steam as long as they get a rest before going out and facing off the next threat. Morality takes a back seat to necessity in some circumstances, this is one of those.

Out of the game though, I wholeheartedly agree with ratche. There are bigger and more important things than wringing my hands at the dialogue and actions of a fictional character.

[SNIP] I do not have respect for dead murderers and psychopaths.

Well that’s silly, because you probably know a psychopath. There’s an entire stigma about psychopaths being soulless, uncaring monsters who will do whatever it takes to advance their own agenda, and care not about stepping on those who get in their way. And while a small (see: small) minority of psychopaths are actually violent, there’s a much larger number that is largely unknown, because they act like normal people. And that’s what psychopaths do. Act like normal people. Mostly because they are – they just have a lack of empathy. Note, that doesn’t mean they’re bad people, it just means they’re not empathetic, they can’t relate to people as well as others can. Those with autism are the same way. Psychopaths are not murderers. Don’t confuse the two.

On Ceara, she didn’t deserve what happened to her. She was a gifted Sylvari who chose not to follow the teachings of the Tablet, that’s fine. She stepped into the machine and met Mordremoth, and there she was corrupted by him. She stopped being Ceara. She stopped being the Sylvari she was and become the murderer we know a bit more. Even while she was corrupted, she always tried to do things for “her reasons”, even though they were obviously to advance Mordremoth’s plans (read: waking him up). If you’ll re-watch the cutscene that plays after she dies, you’ll see that she’s visibly corrupted, she has tendrils growing on her face, and that’s what Scarlet’s Veil kept hidden, her corruption. I don’t think it’s a large step to say that what she did was not what she necessarily wanted to do, but she still did it and she should be seen as responsible for her actions. Just keep in mind that Ceara probably never wanted to do what she did.

Yes she did.

“There are horrors beyond life’s edge that we do not suspect, and once in a while man’s evil prying calls them just within our range.”
- H.P. Lovecraft

Or to back it down a notch? If you leave your door open and wait to see who comes through, whose fault is it if you get a guest you don’t wish?

Just keep in mind that Ceara probably never wanted to do what she did.

Lots of people don’t want to have the results they get, it doesn’t mean they’re not responsible for the choices which led there. Ceara was reckless and had a disregard for anyone’s wisdom, and that is why she got caught and twisted around.

I will allow this much. Putting her down was a merciful act.

So joking about dead is now necessity? Wow. Killing her. Yes. I might agree. Even if I dont like it. But being a kitten about it? No. I wont agree.

If your hero is some kind of rat from divinity reach. Then it would be fine. But there is many more possibility’s for character creation. All guys of your kind of saying is > its fine for my personality, then it should be fine for everyone. No. It shouldn’t. For you such choice is morally right. For me > it makes my hero even worse, than scarlet.

For me > it makes my hero even worse, than scarlet.

You would have hated what our predecessors did. Like, I dunno, freed an undead warlord who was only stopped by a figure of legendary might and not stopped him before he rose to power again? Or how about assisting ethnic cleansing having a foothold in Cantha?

I didnt play guild wars 1, so i have no idea about context here. So I can’t argue about this.

Welcome to the wondrous world of roleplaying and headcanon, Sergoros. Since the Personal/Living Story only takes place in your own character’s head, feel free to go “Well, that’s not what MY character would have said/done!” and invent a whole new scenario for what your character would have said in that situation.

None of the three options Marjory gave me in that scene suited my characters either, so in my head my characters all said something completely different.

At this rate, you, might as well, could have proposed me to go play some dnd

But it wouldnt be bad, if dialog options would have been at least different. Not 3 times same answer.

I think the answers made my character sound like a “Jerkass Hero”.

The first answer makes her sound as stupid as that Braham ape.
The second makes her sound like a lesbian.
And the third makes her sound like one of those jerks that love to make racist jokes.

Whether something is either wrong or right, someone will always complain about it.

Good thing I don’t get immersed enough in video games that I confuse my real world morals with theirs.

But you immersed enough to go to the forums and talk about how not immersed are you. You know, some people might even think, that you care. Silly people.

Of course I care about the game. I wouldn’t be playing it otherwise… Just not enough to misconstrue a joke with realism.

So…would it be fine, if game, u care about, would transform into puke jokes and story for a 10 year old kids?

You mean like how Guild Wars 1 became Guild Wars 2?

You’ll need a lot thicker skin if you expect to survive in this world if your fake world is offending you.

So…do you like playing a game with puke jokes and with story for 10 year old? Why you keep playing in guild wars 2? They changed everything. The only thing, thats common between them is lore. And they screwing it. Whats holding ya?

You keep making that comparison without backing it up. Show me these alleged “puke jokes.” Expand your post. Prove your statements.

Alternatively you can choke down that Scarlet Burger mail we just got and deal with it.

You mean like how Guild Wars 1 became Guild Wars 2?

You’ll need a lot thicker skin if you expect to survive in this world if your fake world is offending you.

It was your words. I guess, someone lied to make his statement sound better? Its fine. I forgive you.

Still don’t see “puke jokes.” Try again.

Exactly. It means, your comment was a lie and you should feel bad about that.

Do you want to back that up with evidence? Not that you ever have with anything in this thread. You keep bringing up some facetious fallacy that because we celebrate the death of a tyrant, we are around your age and appreciate juvenile humour.

If you don’t like it, that’s fine. Just don’t expect to rally the troops to your aid by making slanderous statements that you can provide NO backing for. That way you don’t get offended when I call you out on your lies.

Guess, you never read the quotes. It is bad. Or just blind. In any case. I can’t cure you.

Though…im feeling generous today….so ill try again.

Your answer to this quote was: You mean like how Guild Wars 1 became Guild Wars 2?

So. Its easy to see, that u said, that gw2 have puke jokes, unlike guild wars 1.

And now u saying, that guild wars 2 have no puke jokes. Can you see contradiction or is it to hard for you?

It hasn’t so far. I’ll keep you posted about how I’d feel about it if it happens.

See? So its all about your moral standards. Guess, they just wasnt as high as mine. A little lower and even u would be hurt. Looks like you immersed much enough. Just dont accept it untill it hurts ya.

Morality is subjective. What you perceive as high, I might see as self righteous.

It depends on what you believe in. It can be subjective or definitive.

Guild Wars 1 was a classically juvenile story for Prophecies, and I will continue to say that any time someone wants to try to build it up on a pedestal as “better storytelling”. It was badly paced, almost everything was telegraphed, and the cliches were so thick you could spoon them like pudding.

Heck, Nightfall presented unto us “Drakes on a Plain”.

Now, then, how do you see GW2 as any worse than that?

Would you please read thread Before answering on the last post? Then you would know context and…well…wouldn’t look silly. I never played guild wars 1 and never implied, that guild wars 2 story is any different from guild wars 1 story.

Please, if I cared about looking silly I wouldn’t post anything at all. Ever. I also wouldn’t have learned how to dance, or drink, or go to conventions. Actually, I kicked the last one to the curb for being too expensive on my budget. Anyway, if you don’t care about looking silly then I don’t either.

I’m also probably insane — I main a ranger.

Besides, wasn’t talking solely to you, just to the sentiment posited so often about how GW1 was so much not trash. If you haven’t played Guild Wars 1 . . . why not? I mean, it’s pretty darn cheap now and I think the whole of the forums agrees it’s a better game overall. I also say it’s pretty worthwhile even as a single player experience, though that’s an entirely different set of skills to work with than playing with people.

And if you haven’t played GW1 why the heck are you only attacking me about talking about it around you?

You quoted me. So it was question to me. So I had to answer and correct you. Thats how forums work. If u quote someone, then you are talking with that person. There is exceptions of course, but they require right context.

Well now I am talking to you. Directly.

No, that’s not how forums work. How forums work is someone posts something, and quotes are used to single out things people said, not always as a means of reply. There are several other reasons why one would quote another and not specifically be talking to that person. It could be they are talking about that person, or about what they said rather than the person at all.

That’s how citations work.

Actually the fact that this is fiction matters more than anything. I didn’t go out yesterday and throw grenades at my enemies, or chop down a tree for crafting materials.

I didn’t read this whole thread so this has probably already been brought up but I gotta ask, how awesome must your life be that something like this annoys you

Because there are many ways to enjoy the game. You can love it for the e-sport, for the social part, or because of the story immersion. From your calleous, harrasing tone I can deduce that you’re not the kind of person that can start reading a book in the morning and when done, wonder why it’s getting dark outside already. That’s fine, everybody’s different. I’m not even gonna ask you to try and imagine what it’d be like because if you were capable of that, you wouldn’t be asking what our problem is.

As for your judgement on what I should or shouldn’t care about though, I take offense. You assume from a few forum posts that I care more about an ingame dialogue than about a war? I’m presuming it was just a discussion tactic and you’re not really that stupid. Regardless, there being a world out there does not invalidate my main concern.

I like stories. I like role-playing. MMO’s are role-playing games. Role-players pay just as much for the game as you do, so their concerns may be heard. You may not like it but your trashtalking will not shut us up because you’re not more entitled to anything than the rest of us.

If you can read this then it is proof that ArenaNet’s moderators just, kind and fair.
