It’s an interesting issue. While I appreciate the addition of a disabled character, I do feel that its still somewhat lacking in that it plays to the stereotype of – “Disabled people must be super intelligent or something like professor X and Oracle”.

I`d be a lot more impressed if we saw a disabled norn or charr who wasn’t somehow gifted with an intellect and gadgets that basically made their disability into a benefit.

While I like Taimi, I feel her disability is tacked on. If Roxx lost an arm and was then told she was unfit for the warband – that would be a significant plotline involving disability.

When I see postings like this, I know that there are people who might not be handicapped in the way many others are and they can’t comprehend it in the least.

Taimi gives hope to all who are struggling with disease and maladies produced not by us, but by those very forces that were “supposed” to help us when we are very ill.

While Taimi’s impairment is a nice nod towards people with disabilities, it doesn’t hinder her in the slightest and thus makes for an unrelatable character. Take away the deux-ex-machina golem suit so we can see a character whose illness actually impacts them instead of being treated as a tacked on woobie trait.

TI’m young (in my 20s) and I walk with a cane and have a handicapped tag for my car – and I get nasty looks from people all the time because I’m young and, clearly, I shouldn’t need a cane or a handicapped space. I’ll never forget the day a pregnant woman berated me outside a grocery store for taking the handicapped space she wanted.

can completely empathise with you on this, my wife has psoriatic arthritis and until she got the drug embrel she could hardly walk and had to use a walking stick and was in a lot of pain, we got a blue badge for the car. The ammount of disgusting looks we have had when we have used disabled spaces, even when my wife has got out of the car and is using her stick and in obvious pain, they look at you like dirt cos your using a space and someone young shouldnt be using it, we even had another disabled person have a go at us for parking their until he saw my wife and we had a blue badge.
Thankfully my wifes medication works wonders but she still has bad days and days, when shes fine she over does it and pays for it the next day.

since when has being pregnant been a disability ????

Being a deaf player myself, after reading the forum from the OP, it really made me smile. In real life, when I see someone with disability who use devices or equipment who used them to help with their lifestyle, it always made me smile. The reason that I smile is because people who have disability can do it with the aid of their devices or equipment.

The only positive thing to see is when people says, “I can DO it!”, instead of saying, “I can’t do it.” When you say it to others when traveling in GW2, no matter what disabilities they have, just tell them, “You can do it!”

I say to myself sometimes, because I am deaf and I can’t hear everything in the game. However, using the captions coming from the NPC, it really helped me so much. Even if I was under attack, it will flash blood red alert border around the screen which it was telling me I am under attack. I don’t rely much on sound but I usually rely much on seeing something that are out of ordinary or being under attack.

I wanted to say thank you to Christina for writing a heartfelt letter to the game devs and Arenanet for making an awesome game.

Since we have Taimi in the game, do we have a deaf NPC in the game? It would be awesome to see the NPC using sign language.

None that I’ve ever encountered, but they probably exist somewhere. Although, different world so different mechanics, someone that is deaf could but asura technology to communicate for them or through the use of magic (i.e. being taught language and then using it to telepathically voice their opinion). Sign language would require some custom animations, though a lot of players wouldn’t take notice unless another npc told them that they were deaf, else they’d probably guess that (not being mean here) are bugged and don’t have a voice track added to them when they go through their animations, unless very specific (like with hand signs).

I understand why you would feel this way, but Taimi’s cindition DOES impact her, as evidenced by needing a golem to get around. We simply have not seen the other ways she is impacted yet.

You have to understand also, that in real life, many people are partially or totally disabled and accomplish things that able bodied people cannot. Not all of them are so visible that one can say whether or not they’re impacted.

There are amputee athletes who can outrun most whole people. There are people in wheelchairs who play better basketball than you or I could ever hope to. There is a rather famous disabled person who one of the the best theoretical physicists in the world (Salute, Stephen William Hawking CH CBE FRS FRSA!) These are but a few examples.

The difference is in whether the person lets their conditions define them.

@Christina:
Thank you. Nuff said.

Yay, she made omnomberry cookies! I’d love t o see the recipe!

It’s not particularly innovative, but this is the (longish) recipe:

  • 3/4 cup (1.5 sticks to 170g) unsalted butter, softened to room temperature
  • 3/4 cup (150g) dark brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup (50g) granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg, at room temperature
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 2 cups (250g) all-purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoons cornstarch (aka cornflour)
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt (or to taste, I tend to think 1/2 is a bit much)
  • 3/4 cup (135g) white chocolate chips
  • 1/4 cup (50g) dried cranberries
  • 1/4 cup (50g) dried cherries
  • 1/4 cup (50g) dried blueberries (I tend to eyeball my fruits)

Beat the butter for 1 minute on medium speed until completely smooth and creamy. Add the brown sugar and granulated sugar and mix on medium speed until fluffy and light in color. Mix in egg and vanilla. Scrape down the sides and bottom of the bowl as needed.

In a separate bowl, combine flour, cornstarch, baking soda and salt. On low speed, slowly mix the dry ingredients into the wet ingredients until combined. The cookie dough will be thick (pry it off the mixer thick). Add the white chocolate chips and dried fruits and mix until evenly distributed.

Heat your oven to 350F and roll dough into 1 tablespoon balls (ish). Bake for 8-9 or until barely golden brown around the edges. The cookies will look very soft when you remove them and probably puffy. You can flatten them with a spoon, but they’ll deflate as they cool, too. Leave them on the cookie tray for ~5 minutes, then put them on a rack to cool the rest of the way.

As touching as this thread is, it does kinda highlight the way Taimi was pretty much sidelined for the last several chapters of the Living Story. After coming back from Edge of the Mists, she was told to guard the refugee camp during Escape from LA, and she has no interaction whatsoever in Battle from LA. The emphasis on her becoming the 5th member of Destiny’s Edge 2.0 makes her absence during the final mission that more noticable.

Does come across like a bit of “Here’s a token disabled character. What, actually participate in the finale? Lolno, disabled people can’t contribute to important things, lol!”

Kasmeer was the only one who participated in combat. Marjory and Brahm if you count them being injured. They could have just as easily had Taimi be the medic in that scene instead of Rox. For all the buildup and/or foreshadowing about how much she wanted to see Scarlet, you’d think she’d have made -some- sort of appearance there that wouldn’t have involved her being in combat.

The difference is in whether the person lets their conditions define them.

Our conditions do not define us but all of them have an impact on our lives. I’m writing this as someone living with multiple disabilities. Taimi does not reflect that sentiment. Her golem isn’t hard to control, never malfunctions, appears to be extremely durable and is superior in every way when compared to her actual physical body. Why did the writers give her a disability at all when it has no drawbacks or consequences? It feels artificial and cheap.

That’s really cool of you to give them some home baked cookies! I did a similar thing once by sending a bunch of goodies to the Runescape staff after all they’d done for me – there was a point in time of my life where I was going to end it all, but Runescape was there for me to escape reality and I stayed alive through that dark period – so it was the least I could have done for them because Runescape literally saved my life.

I admire how Anet includes characters that otherwise wouldn’t normally be included in most MMORPG’s due to discrimination. I was surprised Anet included the kissing scene between Kasmeer and Jory for example, because it’s not often I see people like myself (I’m a guy and I’m gay) in real life, let alone in gaming, so it’s nice to know that there are others out there like me too. I really admire what Anet did for the LGBT community by having that scene – it’s also really brave of them too because there are quite a few companies these days that are ridiculed for being pro-equality (Just look at how many companies dropped Ellen DeGeneres when she came out).

Late to the topic, but . . . if we’re sharing.

My mother has recently developed (i.e., last two years) serious leg issues pretty much necessitating she take it easy and this year she’s pulling for retirement and disability if she can. She (most days) cannot walk without a cane, but she makes the effort to do a renaissance festival twice a year (one March, one November) and does not like to think of herself as unable to have a good time.

(That said, I got to watch her pay for it the night after the last faire – she stuffed her purse strap in her mouth so she wouldn’t scream.)

And I found out this is probably going to start with me in five to ten years since both sides of the family have records of arthritic breakdowns in joints. I kind of already feel it, on really long days.

It’s nowhere near the same stories as everyone with nervous conditions . . . but the sort of frustration of your body not being able to do what you need it to do? In this household, it is known.

Anyone reading this? Stay well, find something which makes you happy . . . and hold on tight. Doesn’t matter what it is.

this is such a lovely thread! I come from a family with migraines, my mom has them, my brother has them, I have them. Thankfully, there are preventive things (excercise. particularly pilates and yoga) I can do to avoid getting an attack so if I’m careful I don’t get more than just a few a year… but when they hit, I lose my balance, I get intensely intolerant to any sound or light, any movment is excruciatingly painful, can’t read, cant play games, can’t even sleep… so, anyways, aside from the pain, mostly what bothers me the most during an attack is the boredom. You’re left with none of the things you normally love to do, and just your own thoughts to keep you entertained. I think up short stories for myself, or imagine pictures… I’m not surprised at all that people with physical disabilities so often turn to creative means to express themselves: I most certianly would too!

I’m very much aware that I’m lucky I “only” have migraines and for the majority of the time I’m able in both body and mind. But I’m also so very glad and proud to read your stories – not only Christina but everyone who’s shared their story on this thread! you’re all awesome!

I am sorry you feel that way.

It remains to be seen what other impacts it has on her life. The most important thing about it is this: Who cares if it’s not “real”?

This character has inspired others, and I, for one, think that it’s great that a major label MMO has a main character or two (hats off to Tybalt) that is disabled. Even if it’s not really evident how that disability impacts them for the rest of the story.

Here’s an e-hug for you, Slowpoke. It sounds as if you need one.

I actually just noticed Taimi having problems walking but I immediately thought that it was a great and personable addition to the character.

And to the OP. I would trade Gems for Cookies anyday

As someone who also suffers from a degenerative genetic disorder, called Charcot Marie Tooth, I too was a bit surprised by the introduction of “little T” as I so affectionately refer to her. It wasn’t until I saw her move across the room though that it really hit me.

I was a very active kid. I played hockey, basketball, football, soccer and baseball. I was always outside running, jumping, diving etc but at the age of 13 I was diagnosed with Charcot Marie Tooth (CMT). It’s a peripheral nerve disorder that causes a whole slew of problems. It’s degenerative and there is no treatment or cure so it only gets worse, never better. I’ve essentially had pain associated with this every single day since I was 13 (I’m 29 now). Needless to say I went from being someone who loved to be active and move and play sports to someone who could do mostly none of those things anymore. Video games, which had been a past time for me, became a real outlet that I could sink my energy into and they were something I enjoyed that I could actually do. Again, don’t get me wrong though I’m not in a wheelchair or anything (yet) but I am pretty limited physically. In the past few years it has begun to affect my forearms and hands but thankfully the progression has been slow. I take life as it comes to me. I have no control over the rate at which this affects me so I might as well make the best of what I can for as long as I can, and when I can’t anymore at least I know I didn’t waste any time not doing things out of fear.

Seeing little T being witty and intelligent and funny I hope highlights for others that a disability does not define a person, we are more than the hand we were dealt.

In response to the OP and the whole handicap parking thing, happens to me all the time. It’s frustrating and upsetting but people are ignorant and think they know better. Hang in there, don’t let it get to you too much and know there are plenty of us out there in the gaming community who have your back.

For more information on CMT feel free to google the Charcot Marie Tooth Association and read about the STAR research initiative they are involved with that is looking for treatments and cures for a wide variety of diseases not just CMT.

Thanks ANET for having the courage to show a little bit of the fight that so many of us handle daily.

P.s. My mom is fighting MS as well so I really appreciate all the work from the community to raise awareness for that as well.

When Edge of the Mists launched, Taimi was stranded there because her golem was broken and needed repairs. We had to go in and get spare parts to help her repair it so she can go back to Rata Sum. I have a friend whose disability has him only able to use a computer with the use of a voice recognition program. Yet he still plays game. He has even leveled a ranger to 80 with only the occasional mesmer teleport to help him reach vistas that require some coordinated jumping. See, in a way, you similarly could say the program he uses takes away some of the drawbacks of not being able to handle a mouse and keyboard. All I see is a tool to help make his life a little easier and that allowed us to play together against all odds.

I really think you’re reading too much into it, with all due respect to the hardships your condition have brought into your life. Characters like Taimi feel good to people like Christina or my buddy because although they’ve been dealt a bad hand, they can still accomplish things, they can stand next to those nice, healthy heroes. Just like in real life they shouldn’t be cast aside just because their bodies aren’t 100% functional.

well I know in japan they have some sort of robo leg things that wear around the waist like power suit armor almost. and stuff forgot what they are called and technicly they do have droids or golems that help carry patients in some their hospitals or they are in testing.

Beautiful post Christina.
I’ve never met Taimi, but reading about your reaction when meeting the kid and her golem it feels like I was there, and I understand how these details are a source of inspiration, I suffer the same condition as you (SM); I was diagnosed in 1999 when I was 23 years old, first 3 years were the worst as it affected my left hand and leg, after that It hasn´t been aggresive, but slowly been affecting my mobility and my energy, everyday I got to fight against this ever-going tireness.
The MS Toga Event Yailith mentioned is on-going every year since GW1, never participated for one thing or another, but not gonna miss it this year. It is a positive thing that this event tries to make people aware of the sm condition… (will contact you Yailith as I need details about the event).
Thank you Christina for sharing this beautiful story of Taimi and her golem, also to the developers of gw2 for the game (ofc) but also for creating unique characters with background that may inspire us in real life…
And ofc, big thanks to gw2 community, people that came to this thread to share bits of their stories or just to show their support.
Big hug to Christina and to everyone. Keep strong!

Inspiring post . . . is refreshing to see this kind of beautiful post in the forums.

Beautiful perspective . . .
Beautiful writing . . .

This is an example of how a online game that is often criticized to steal peoples life actually makes it better.

Congratulations Anet team.

My full respect.

Don’t suppose you saw her dialogue with Braham in Edge of the Mists, did you? They are gone now, but if you haven’t, maybe I can find a video of it somewhere.

Anyway, I’m disabled myself, though it’s milder than yours. I am an amputee. I lost my left leg below the knee while in the military during the FIRST Iraq war roughly 25 years ago. Despite that, though, as long as I haven’t had an issue come up like foliculitis (ingrown hair), or the prosthesis is wearing out or something, I’m just fine, so I’m not really handicapped often.

It DID lead me to a career as a prosthetist though, and I take great joy in helping amputees. Mostly they are geriatric diabetics, so I’m thrilled if they even get out of their wheelchairs, but recently I fitted an 11 year old girl who lost her leg due to cancer. Wow, if you could have seen the look on her face after she took her first steps… she started crying, and I had to fight not to myself.

Anyway. So yeah, I loved Taimi was in there. I’d love to see more. Maybe people with asuran or charr tech inspired prosthetics. Harnesses for helping paralyzed people walk. Etc etc. I think it wouldn’t be wise to inundate the game with such characters, but inserting one here and there, or maybe an Advanded Research Hospital with several of these patients might be really cool.

As a father of three girls your post almost made me cry.

Thank you for being a hero in Iraq, and thank you for being a hero in the office.

Aw heck, thanks for saving Tyria as well!
