The way they have it now, small chance in an event bag, i see no problem with. It gives a chance for people who werent able to do the previous events a shot at the items.
-A guy with molten jetpack who bought a monocle (300g at the time) for the Mrs. Buns.
Yeah, considering the pathetic drops I’ve been getting out of ultimate bags, your jetpack is safe in obscurity.

I remember how a dev said it wont come back because it would be unfair to people.
Which is why I’ll always dislike reading Colin’s comments (which is the one that said they won’t bring dungeon rewards, ie jetpack/monocle, back). The only value there was to certain things (jetpack/monocle/etc) was only because of the RNG. Several of us constantly ran those dungeons (myselkitten0 times for MA facility) and still never got the unique rewards. Even if I had gotten one, I’d still want them to become obtainable again. Screwing new players out of getting rewards is just going to push them away (which will undoubtedly propagate further when they tell their friends. Bad reviews spread faster/farther than good ones) because they’ve missed out on so many unique things.
I hate it when people want to stop other people from getting stuff just so they can be “unique”. So what if it cheapens everything? There will always be new stuff and people will migrate to that, thus leaving you as “unique” if you yourself don’t want to change to the new item.

Im glad they brought it back, nothing is wrong with it, it is still a very low chance and gives new players a piece of history without spending 1000’s of gold.

link the quote or it didn’t happen!
As for the jet pack, those specific rewards are intended as limited rewards you can only earn during that time, thus making them valuable. It wouldn’t be fair to the people who did earn jet packs for us to bring them back, and suddenly undercut their value entirely.
Thanx, but I asked for a link to the quote, not for a quote. He obviously said things before and after. It is your judgement that makes you pick this quote, but I would love to see the whole story.
Don’t get me wrong. I know for a fact that colin has not always been a man for his word. He has been promising thing that he didn’t deliver. It even seems to be his weak point. he keeps falling into his own trap (for the rest your doing great colin). but if you just look at https://www.guildwars2.com/en/news/looking-ahead-guild-wars-2-in-2013/ you will find a lot of unforfilled promises:
1: no new trasits, just some replaced
2: legendary gear
3: new legendary weapons
4: ‘craftable’ precursorJust to name a few. I like Colin’s enthousasm and I do think he is doing the best he can for this game. but he is not a good politician. He has been making some promises he didn’t keep.
So all thats left is: ‘Colin: where are my garanteed precursors?? don’t listen too much to mr. J.S. (see my signature!!)
Everything you link to the reasonable person would seem less like Colin and more like marketing and CEO thing aka executive decision over Colin. It seems to me they feel that there is no reason to bring those things out and simply package them as an “expansion worth of content”. Personally, given what we have seen with the dataming they could released some of these stuff now, but it makes very little marketing sense to, when you have ESO coming in april.

Did they have to bring back the toxic focusing crystal recipe?
That was account bound and cost 5 gold plus spores to buy. There were tradable versions too, but thoses came only from spvp boxes that you could only buy once a day.
Now the market is flooded and the price is under a gold on th TP.
It’s ridiculous.

if you reach 1200 survivors saved the bag that you get has a small chance to give you items from past living story events.

Thats pretty much all I got out of the one max tier bag that I got to participate in due to TTS doing a 1500 run on my server. Didn’t get anything from previous events. I did however get, yesterday I think it was, 5 dragon coffers out of a citizens bag though (got kitten out of those too).

And what’s the problem with that?

Frankly I’d go as far as too consider the person who bought the Jetpack to be cooler. Someone who deliberately saved up that much gold because they wanted it is, to me, far more meaningful than someone who just happened to having drop into their lap because they were in the right place at the right time.
While they are undoubtedly more special, because their desire to get one exceeds those who got lucky, I think the point of this most is more about rewards being brought back rather than rewards being purchased on the TP. I think the Deathly Mantle is cool, but I would rather save up the money to buy it from TP than ever reduce the Mantle’s value (both financial and sentimental) by asking it for it to come back.

Considering the jetpack was an RNG that only dropped for very few people out of the tens of thousands who played the content, I don’t think bringing it back is unfair at all. Like many others posting here, I was present for the molten content. I played that dungeon over and over and over and never got this drop nor did I get a mini. It should never have been RNG to begin with and I hope they introduce ways to earn it – and all other event rewards.

I actually found Rata Sum to be more convenient for crafting with it bank centrally located around all the crafting stations, whereas LA had some stations closer and some farther away so I already would go to another city for crafting anyway.

^ Exactly! The majority of players tend to just buy/wear whatever is “in fashion” or that shows off their wealth. (If you’ve ever played GW1, remember all those characters running around in black/white dyed Obsidian armor with Chaos Gloves?) I used to see so many players wearing the Holographic Wings; now I usually only see one a day in hub towns at the most. The Shatterer Wings are even more rare. Having more cosmetic options means that people can instead opt to wear something different that they personally like. Variety is good!
Well another reason Obby/Chaos gloves were so kitten popular in GW1 was they were really quite fashionable armor sets. While certainly not the most fashionable all of the time, it was hard to rival. Paragons, Monks and Rangers definitely felt the sting of lacking armor quality.
Point aside, I agree with diversity and I think things should be purchased on the TP but I’m not a huge fan of bringing content back. There should be a token system in place for limited content that stays limited – if you didn’t get it while it was out, too bad. To run back to the GW1 example, it’s not like ANet lets every new player use the old version of Shadow Form so they can get up on a year of easier-than-hell ecto farming. Nope, they have to join the game exactly in the state it’s in. Does it mean there’s equipment they can’t obtain? Not necessarily, but they missed out on the biggest cash cow of the game’s lifetime.

No.
The value of something it is not in how many people do not have it, but in how many people enjoy it.
And nobody can enjoy it unless some people have it. That includes people being able to see other people using the item, even if they themselves don’t have it.
And when new rewards are added, people who got the old ones stop using part of the old stuff to use the new stuff, thus its overall presence in the game is reduced.
To solve that, after the original source of the item, you add much smaller and limited alternate methods of acquisitions, to keep a steady but very small flow of everything in the game, so nothing ever disappears, but rare stuff remains rare.
One example of this are miniatures.
After the Set 1 was removed, you can still get set 1 miniatures in the mystic forge.
And once in a while previous set may be added to gemstore for a limited time, when the number of set 1 items in the trading post are the most reduced.
This alleviates the problem of excessively rare items and massive price spikes that turn these items not into something rare and cool to have, but in a luxury one gets to show off wealth, or something to speculate, or store as wealth buffers.

If it hurts smoothpenguin’s TP trading, can it really be considered bad?
