GW2 has the most competition orriented PVE I have ever seen an an MMO.
People need to read the op and realize that it’s not about contribution but mob tagging. Getting gold is painfully easy. Do about 15-20k damage and go afk, you’ll get gold.
As a mesmer, here’s what I do to get loot.
First, you have to know where the mobs are coming from. Sometimes they spawn way away and run all the way in, so seeing them ahead of time goes a long way for getting loot as a mesmer. I use greatsword and sword/focus with blink and mirror images utility in full explorer’s gear (prec/pow/magic find %). Start with greatsword out. As soon as you see the mobs, use GS4 in the center to hit the most possible, immediately swap to sword and blink into the center or just ahead of where they’re running. Then hit mirror images, blurred frenzy, and shatter. By this time, everything should be dead from all the other people’s aoe, but hopefully you got your full damage combo in.
Using this combo and being fast I can consistently pull a moderate amount of loot drops, though sometimes you will still get nothing regardless of how much effort you put into it. I used to use staff for chaos storm, but it’s too slow, and doesnt add a phantasm for shattering. Phantasmal warden can be useful if people arent paying attention and your combo is’nt ready, pick a mob in the center and drop him down then shatter him before he dies. But most of the time, PW is just too slow of damage.
Veterans are a waste of time. Ignore it and prepare your position for the next wave of enemies. Save your cds. Even going full out on veterans, most of the time you won’t get loot.
Unfortunately, there are still cases where no matter what you do as a mesmer, you simply cannot get loot. And grouping with others, from my testing with friends, doesn’t influence the amount of drops you get at all. It’s all about your own damage. Think of it like soloing with party chat.
Meanwhile, warriors and guardians are getting near 100% loot drops with 1/4th the effort involved. They definitely need to change how loot drops work. It’s getting a bit frustrating with the disparity.

They need to have people who take damage from mobs and people who heal those who kill mobs also be on the list for loot, especially as this would encourage healing and make toughness matter in low-end questing.

As a thief I too hardly waste time on veterans (just use poison AoE and rez dead NPCs, since they seem to be the only ones at Penitence that bother rezzing anyone) if there’s only a veteran present. Usually, if the event at the other end of the tunnel is going on I’ll just do enough for gold and then run over to the other one since being downed is far less frequent and there’s more space to travel.
