I’m having trouble figuring out how to begin the battle for mount maelstrom. Do you have to wait for the events to start or is there a certain event that must be completed before the rest of the chain will begin?

The first event starts at Glorlois Spine in Ashen Waste, just outside the volcano, where a Golem runs rampage. This is the start of the meta event.

There is a cool down after Megadestroyer is destroyed before the first event starts again.

I thought that event was the result of another event?
