I did a double-take when I saw this word in the description for this new dungeon and thought: “Raid? As in large-scale dungeon content requiring a very large group of people to complete them?”
Then I come to realize that I live in a reality world in that this is actually a 5-man dungeon according to most MMO news sites and even some red posts themselves. ArenaNet has yet to make a dungeon requiring more than 5 people to complete them.
Personally, I’d love to see what ArenaNet would do to make the traditional “Raid Dungeon” format more innovative and interesting over the current design methods used in most MMOs. Without a dedicated tank and healer, I’d imagine designing this sort of content would be kind of tricky to do without making it into a dungeon full of zerg-rushed encounters. But I could dream, I guess and go a wee bit deeper on that thought in the Dungeon forum. For now, I guess we’ll settle with certain guild bounties that could come close.
Anyway, enough fantasizing— Just thought I’d point out that odd choice of words in the F&F Retribution page. Perhaps the wording could be different like:
“Prepare to charge into the underground with Rox and Braham in our brand-new Living Story dungeon!”
As in … not using the word raid in attempt to get my hopes up… unless it’s really a raid … is it?

You do know that the word raid existed long before MMOs right? And that it have nothing at all to do with the size of the group doing it.
If it was an actual raid, they should have specified the number of players within the description. I instantly thought raiding the new dungeon with the regular 5-man team.
But that would be an interesting thing to see if it was an actual raid to stop the Molten Alliance. They bring their nasty machines, we bring alot of people (more than 5)

True— but when in the context of MMOs, that’s what is generally assumed. I mean, lots of words and actions existed before the creation of MMOs, but that doesn’t mean much.

I suppose you have a point there, but that number could also be “dynamic” like how the Dynamic Event system works in that it scales in difficulty depending on the amount of people that are participating in the event. Honestly, I’d like to see if ArenaNet could make a Raid Dungeon that could fit lots and lots of people in it so that nobody feels left out when a “Guild Raid Night” comes around.

This would be interesting. 5-man dungeons with the option of “Raid” to add more members to it and it scales based on the number. IMO, there would have to be a separate path exclusive to raiding for a different type of exploration.

Based on the actual context of the word in this case it was quite clear, in my eyes, that it was used as its original definition though.

That’s what I would think too. Some paths in some dungeons are way too small for a Raid Group. For instance, I hate to think what Caudecus’ Manor would be like if a group of 50+ was stashed inside the basement of that little mansion. However, dungeons like Arah and CoE seem like the reasonable size to contain Raid groups.
Trust me here. If they add any larger player count instances to the game it will be the first bullet point in the description, not something you need to infer from a vague allusion to the word raid.
Also, they won’t call them raids. They’ll call them “Squad Dungeons” or something. You know, to be innovative.
