45 characters is the maximum length for a topic title on the forums. It is this way to prevent titles from being cut off when viewing a thread. This is not a bug, this is by design.

Mark, I believe he meant that that would make one unable to physically put in more characters, rather than getting an error message after trying to post. Would be more convenient for posters, et cetera. Still wouldn’t be able to put in any more characters.

That’s probably what he meant, but what was delivered was a comment that might have come across as unnecessarily patronizing.

I’ll be honest, as someone who spends a lot of time on these forums… I would much rather have a cut-off title then the 45 character limit. Coming up with a descriptive title is now a complete pain in the kitty. I also request a character limit increase! If it’s having issues being cut off, change the title font size :\ it’s huge!

OP could have put his/her message a little nicer but is still correct.
Also decreasing the font size and allowing more characters for the topic is a good idea!

It’s clearly not a case of “working as intended”.

I wouldn’t. Before they had any limit, thread titles were only visible in the URI as shown in the browser’s address bar. In the forum display and the thread display itself, the text was cut short with an ellipsis. There were plenty of times when the title didn’t quite make sense as a result.

Heck it still happens now with some thread titles.

Thats why I was suggesting for them to change the font size. It doesn’t all show up because they are using like a size 48 font as opposed to 18.

You might want to change the name of this thread too. I think you are looking for Tutorial, not Tuition.

You should not need more then 45 character to title your thread imo. If you need more, then you probably need to sum up your thread topic. What looks better:

“Forum thread titles need more then 45 characters in order to properly sum up my threads.”
-or-
“Forum title length issues”
