“I am Legion. I am one of many, made great by my brothers. My duty has begun and it shall not end until my death. I shall protect the realm. My life is for the Legion. I do not serve the whims of men. No crown shall grace my brow, nor shall I wield power. I am the torch in the darkness, the hint of the dawn after a long night, the fire that pushes back the shadows, the guardian of the realm. I am a Legionnaire. Dawn is coming. My Duty has begun.”
- The Vow of the Legion

“And now night has come, and his duty has ended.”
- Eulogy of the Legion

Valgrad Threetrees looked into the fire. They forest hadn’t seen rain for several months, so they were nice and dry, easy to cut down and perfect for a funeral pyre. His people, the norn, they preferred burial by burning. Sky tombs, they were often called. That black smoke was a staircase to the heavens, some said. Much better than to have maggots and worms chew at your remains.

They were here to help drive back some traitorous charr legion. One of his knight captains, Tomas, wanted to lead the unit but he wanted to do it himself. The charr and the humans may have agreed on a peace, but it was still a messy one. Better a norn to lead an attack on backstabbing charr, he thought.

Maybe he was wrong. Valgrad was too used to the forest landscape of the Shiverpeaks. If there was an ambush, he thought, it would be from behind trees. He never suspected they would come from below. It was surely some stolen charr technology that allowed them to rise from the ground. He had never fought charr before, never had to fight on such flat ground like is the case in Ascalon. Perhaps Tomas’ training would have prepared him better, made him more capable to predicting the attack.

They managed to push them back, but at the cost of four of their own. Sigurn, a raw but eager recruit. Hickory, a good smith and able fighter. Korlak, as good a shot as a charr could get. And Sulim, a young lad. He had a decent arm, and a good heart. They couldn’t even find his head amongst the mud.

“And now, night has come, and their duties have ended.” He spoke the words, as were his duty. He was Grand Commander; that was his duty amongst so many others.

He turned from the fire. He looked into the eyes of his legionnaires. They had all taken off their helmets for the funeral. Most of them had trained alongside the dead. What were they thinking? Of death, of course. The inevitability of it to be certain. Were the humans thinking ill of their charr brethren? Was the sylvari thinking how impossible their goal is? Were the charr asking if they had to keep an eye open in the night?

“Legionnaires. A few more words. Look to the one beside you on your left. And now, to your right. Remember the words you spoke. You are one of many, made greater by your brothers. Your duty is to protect the realm, not to serve the whims of kingdoms.” He stepped out of the way from the pyre. “These men…your brothers, man and charr, died to protect this realm. Do not forget that. Keep your eyes on the goal. Remember your vows, do your duty, and we will see victory. I promise. Now, gather your things. We must reach the outpost by daybreak.”

The Legion in a nutshell: A guild that lives and breathes roleplay. This isn’t just some tag we put in our ads to get a stream of visitors – this is the focus of our guild. Roleplay is what we do. This is why we created the guild in the first place! To be the epicenter of great roleplay and a great community.

What the Legion is: The Legion is essentially a neutral, military organization. When anyone joins the Legion, they swear a vow – that first italicized quote you will see at the top of the page. Part of that vow – “I do not serve the whims of men” – is essentially that Legionnaire cutting his ties with his country. He is now devoted to the Legion. So what we’ve got is a neutral, heavily organized, military organization whose goal is the ambiguous “to serve the realm”. The idea is to allow the guild to get into some interesting political storylines. At first, we will not have any weight. But as we grow in the guild’s narrative, becoming larger and stronger and more influential, we will get to have some interesting scenarios play out.

What benefits do we get when we graduate from initiate to straight out member?: There are two immediate, short term benefits to going through your trial phase. The first is you will gain an IC position within the Legion: we will work with you for your character to be a character of some varying importance, such as being siegemaster or head armorer, or perhaps head of magical security. You can then use this to add something our RP. Secondly, you will be given a character theme that will be added to the Legion’s arranged soundtrack, chosen from my vast library of nearly 300 GB of orchestral and classical music.

Also, we make high quality avatars for each our members! When you join, you get an avatar, and when you get promoted you get a new avatar, each with a unique rank specific border.

The storytelling of the Legion: With our guild we have two types of events. The first are what we call General Events, and these are the events that you are most familiar with. These are events that won’t hold much relevance to the current story arc, and members are allowed to come without signing up in threads on the forums.

Now, the second types of events are Story Events, and these have major influence on our story arc. They usually happen once a week or once on a biweekly rate, and they are limited to slots and those that wish to participate must sign up for necessity reasons. These are very familiar to tabletop game sessions in that I (or an officer) play the role of a GM, we make use of our roll system the Destiny System, and there is a beginning and end (more or less) set in mind. We also make use of a good deal of NPCs, descriptive emotes, and “branching path” settings. The choices and consequences philosophy are most displayed in that the roleplay done during one story event could very easily have lasting impact on not just other story events but the rest of the guild’s roleplay.
