First off there’s no issue with the chest in the dungeon. Saying its hard to get to is like saying its hard to sit on a chair because the cat is there.

As for the topic of jumping puzzles I really wish people would understand why they are in the game. It is content that is quick to make, imaginative and provides the vast majority with a challenge, some fun or both. Its free content and still people complain. If you dont like jumping puzzles dont do them! You get a silly achievement and (for all except Clocktower) a bunch of green loot so its not like those that can do them are somehow gaining a headstart. I get frustrated, I swear and curse at the screen and some are downright horrible to do…but overall im having a lot of fun. Took me 4 hours to do the Clocktower but I did it and the sense of achievement was awesome because I made up my mind that I was going to do it and wouldnt stop until I got through it. Its the same but on a smaller scale with the smaller puzzles.

In summary: why criticise free content? Personally I think the powers that be deserve a rather large pint of beer for their work up to and including the Halloween event. I have never seen this amount of detail and love put into free content in any game. Sure things havent been 100% perfect (IMO Clocktower should have an easy mode for example) but if this is the amount of effort put into every event…this game has very easily paid for itself and i’ll be happy to buy future expansions. Its pretty much at the “Shut up and take my money!” stage already….

1. They get 40k karma head start (cost of a exotic). 2. The content is not free. I payed 50 euro for my game.

1. Putting aside the fact that the item itself isn’t that great (power, condam, MF… all on a skin that’s already in the game for a hell of a lot less effort, not to mention it’s soulbound and can’t be salvaged), exotics are also easily found on the TP for as little as 1-2g a piece. You can’t just take the highest number you can come up with and apply it to your argument like it’s a binary decision (either you pay 40k karma, or you don’t get anything!). That’s disingenuous and misleading at best, and outright manipulative at worst.

2. The content is free. You paid 50 euro for the game, as it came in the box. Any additions made after the fact are free. You do not pay a monthly fee for this game, and any gems you buy are currency to purchase in-game items from the cash shop.

1. You stated that people who complete the tower don’t get any advantage. I proved you wrong.

2. Being a one-purchase game, implies that my money pays for all the content in the game accessible by the “version” of the game I bought without requirements for further payments. What else then my money do you think pays dev’s salary’s?

3. Tbh I’d rather pay a monthly fee for a more thought through content.
Besides jumping is far away from “imaginative”.

keep in mind, TC, that jumping puzzles are one of the most widely praised features in the game, so it’s obvious ANet will add more of those. they said it themselves, the feedback on the jumping puzzles was too positive to be ignored.

i personally love them and wish dungeons had more of them.

I enjoy jumping puzzles to an extent. They can be fun and they provide some much needed relief from all the failed parts of the game (WvW, Orr). I am worried about the way this game is slowly turning into some Super Mario with a sword game, though. That’s really not what it was advertised as, and if it had been advertised as such, I would not have bought it. I’d rather see some more genre specific end game content than a bunch more jumping puzzles.

Agreed and I feel like there has been a bit of a bait-and-switch between what the game was touted as being…and what it really is. Yes, the puzzles are optional and as such I’ll do those I find fun and ignore those I don’t. I don’t mind that they exist within the game but the fact that they are are not just the occasional aside thrown in but an actual “content” feature is off putting. The lack of proper and engaging content that is simply beefed up via time sync things like jumping puzzles etc isn’t how the game was presented. If I wanted to play a platform game, I would have purchased one. I don’t play them for a reason. I thought I was purchasing an MMO fantasy game with a focus on personal character growth and storyline within a fantasy environment. This fulfills that advertised game play only in the most technical definition, imo and experience. I rather get the impression they attempted to…borrow…all the successful feature of all the game that came before them (open grouping from Rift, for example) and lump them all together in a mash then sell this regurgitated content as some sort of new concept that is unique to them. It’s not. What is unique to GW is the lack of a gear grind and I applaud them on that. Sadly, actual innovative content is what was played up and not delivered.

The problem with jumping is that, while many people love it, many others don’t. Jumping has the effect of excluding people from content.

Everything beyond tic-tac-toe level of complexity has the effect of excluding people from content. You are playing an MMO that is distinguishing itself by making mobility a big part of its gameplay, and that was a known selling point before it was released. It certainly is why I bought the game and moved away from something static like LoTRO.

But LoTRO and MMOs like it are a dime a dozen. Why does everything have to cater to the same playstyle? Can’t those of us who like mobility, who like jumping around like crazy, dodging pits and traps and insta-kill attacks, have an MMO? The “movement is hard” crowd dominates the genre enough as it is.

The more difficult you make it, the more people you exclude.

And the easier you make, the less rewarding the content and the less desirable it is to repeat. I’m all for getting rid of fake difficulty where it crops up, but I’m also for games throwing challenges of all difficulties across the skill-based spectrum.

The designer of the tower jump puzzle stated publicly that he only expected about 5% of people to make it. That is rather extreme, but that was jumping for its own sake and easily enough avoided. When you start making jumping a requirement as a means of accessing other content, then you run the risk of alienating people.

How is the clock tower any different from Ascent to Madness in that respect? ALL of the rewards in AtM can be acquired through other means without stepping foot into the instance (with the exception of the achievement, which only requires you to go there). And no, running AtM until your hands cramp up from RSI is no guarantee you’ll get anything special, either.

At the end of the day, no skill in jumping is even required. I guided guildies and pubs through the dungeon that were terrible at jumping, rezzing them the whole way. You don’t even take armor damage if you die during a fall. So what’s the big deal?

(I will agree, though, that I died more to falls than to the Mad King… but that’s because neither the Mad King nor his minions ever killed me while I’m a rather curious Asura)

Are people really that bad at jumping from ledge to ledge? Getting around in the Mad King’s dungeon is the easiest thing in there. The only falling deaths I’ve ever witnessed were from people being feared off or intentionally belly-flopping to the bottom to be revived at the chest for the fun of it. There has been the occasional “ah crap, walked off the chain” death here and there.

I’m more peeved at the people that pull every spider on the middle level when 90% of them can be skipped over. But jumping? Quit trying to high dive all the way between levels and actual use your camera to look around and see the ledges, it’s not hard at all.

With the alternative being that the MK would require good gear so to one shot him and basically exclude everyone without a geared 80? You’d basically removing the dungeon for 80% of players in most games. Upping the difficulty by requiring being a good player instead of having good gear is OK in my book.

If I can’t play Guild Wars 2 at work, I won’t work in Guild Wars 2 either.

To be quite honest I dont see the issue with any of the jumping, yes its frustrating at times but then again its fun, so it costs a little in repair bills from falling deaths, it can really kitten you off when you forget to get the loot from the chest before leaving but at the end of the day it is just another element to a multi layered game.

My wife comes over all dizzy and the like with jumping puzzles and in the MK she employed the I fall, you rez stratergy on each occassion when we did it. We also did it with a PUG and never laughed so much at the raining bodies from missing the jumps etc.

If its not for you then do it to get the loot (if you really need the loot, karma, achievement etc) through gritted teeth and after you can just forget it. For me it is PVP, so I will get my POI etc for 100% world completion in WvW maps but may then never visit either WvW or sPvP after that.

Falling deaths don’t break armor.

This is just silly, my group was doing speed runs of the dungeon after the second or third run. If the jumps are killing you, you either didn’t wait for your health to regain before jumping again, or you missed a closer rock to jump to, thus avoiding greater fall damage.
