Anyone remember the first open world event in rift when they opened the second dungeon? It was about the same as this. A huge disaster. I am thinking this is a very hard thing to pull off.
even if you didn’t play rift, it should’ve been obvious after mad king that doing an even in LA was recipe for disaster.
sure, all these mobs running around spawning other mobs and 10 times the stuff going on compared to MK will SURELY work out…
It was just very frustrating, if they wanted to they could have had the Karka spawn all over different places of lions arch, splitting players up and away from each other. Thus reducing the amount of lagg in one converged area.
Also there was a possibility to make a mini instance where it’d zone 10-20 people into a mini instance to fend off the mobs in lions arch (Kind of like story) and make the mobs a lil weaker. Therefore that also would have helped move the story on.
In hindsight there is alot that could have been done and handled better.
There should reward players for turning up to events like this too. I mean in future people might try and avoid events like this because of there being no benefit to attend them other than a massive armor bill.
Tho the only thing I’d like at this current time is ArenaNet just admitting, yes we messed up this event and we are sorry. Its the Free Weekend, best time to get new players involved. But seeing a event happen like this has from the forum posts I’m seeing, making them want to avoid the game. They’ve gotta do more to entice people to stay. I will be turning up to the other two events, but if nothing happens to reward people and/or its the same thing again today as it was yesterday, I will be seriously annoyed that ArenaNet are not listening to there fanbase, deleting/not answering forum posts is not helping at this current moment in time.
It’s one thing to dream up an exciting event.
It’s quite another to pull it off.
ANet has fine talent for dreaming. They’re still lacking the tools for running big events.
Given the entire meta of WvWvW is about exploiting bugs with rendering and culling, it’s hardly a surprise.
I like how people act like it wouldn’t lag with any other MMO company.
Like all other MMOs are completely blameless.

Then maybe the event system is a bit like the holy trinity and various other aspects of mmo’s that they’ve thrown out the window and should be similarly treated as such
I think their priorities at the moment SEEM TO BE to desperately appease players with fluff content that has to be chopped and subsidized with events held in areas that EVERYONE uses for even non event aspects.
Lions arch, is the universal hangout spot for a lot of players looking for dungeon groups, and adding to the traffic that’s already there AGAIN with a bigger event than MK as mentioned, was just REALLY, REALLY DUMB.
The only question I’d like to ask is if A-net are “dedicated to improving the quality of the game” why repeat a mistake in over-utilizing LA again after the last event of a smaller scale had many players complaining of the lag and how it takes over the game to the point where only the event matters.
As for the dilemma of the posters friend, you’ll have to be more specific with how he framed his feedback and how constructive it was…
Going against forum rules is never ok, but if A-net’s faceless mods are banning and censoring players who are merely voicing concerns and giving negative feedback, then not only will it diminish their player-base and confidence in the games management, but it will lead to another player/staff standoff, a worryingly common problem nowadays with big online games.

Hubris is a funny thing.
JK, you know I love you ANet.
But yeah, I’m not sure how they couldn’t have seen this coming. MK was a good example of insane lag and people being kicked, and back then there weren’t even any fighting to worry about.
Hopefully they learned a lot, but the sad thing is, later there’s going to be another kickoff event, and tomorrow is the super hyped, world changing, one time event. And tomorrow is supposed to be a lot more packed than yesterday.
Not that I doubt your abilities, ArenaNet, but I’m preparing for another disaster.

Why didn’t they just use the Claw Island instance for this? I know LA is this hub of civilization, and it would suffer most from an attack (story wise), but gameplay wise we were the ones suffering.
Claw Island would have been prime for this sort of thing. It’s built for an attack, and directly in the path of the karka force on its way to LA.
This could have been the place where we were called to investigate the brewing troubles, plus it’s a military fortification. From a gameplay perspective it would have acted as a perfect zone where the players would have been throttled to the prime amount. Not to mention, a karka attack on Claw Island would have been EPIC!
This event was a failure. I HOPE this time will work without 15 SEC delay in Skills, Chat, etc!
Asura thing.
