You get drops for killing stuff, but not repairing. Would be OK, but limited hammers mean you should really have some guy doing it the whole event except for the portal. So that guy ends up getting no loot. Which is pretty annoying if you are that guy, and makes it more likely that no one will choose to be that guy

You have a point, but it’s also important for it not to be too rewarding, because if everyone starts reparing there’s no chance of winning whatsoever :)

There’s a limited number of hammers available in each lane, so only a couple people would be able to repair at a time anyway.

If there was too much reward then people would probably use up the hammers too fast, which could also be bad. But I think there’s room for something, at least. A chance of a code fragment per repair that’d give you 5-10 for a whole event’s worth or something like that.

It’s funny seeing how many lanes don’t even bother putting them up. After finishing Lane 1’s reactor event I end up picking up the hammer and putting up barricades for any lane that missed them.

Finally I recalled the stopgap solution of a great princess who was told that the
peasants had no bread and who responded: “Let them eat brioche.”

I don’t think that it’s very well explained how to use the hammers, at first I thought they were only for repairs, didn’t know they could actually make a barricade magically appear :)
