maps aren’t designed for mounts.

Maps aren’t designed for a lot of new features that could (possibly) be added to the game. That is no reason to dismiss suggestions for new features. Instead, what you could do is make suggestions on how such a new feature would fit with our current maps, rather than the other way around.

  1. Flying mounts is the worst idea in any MMO unless the map is GIANT!
  2. Mounts in GW2 would need to make changes for one there would need to be more horizontal land mass and two most of the waypoints removed.

  1. Flying mounts is the worst idea in any MMO unless the map is GIANT!

Nonsense. It’s just that none of GW2’s maps are designed for players being in the air. That’s the real problem, not their size.

  1. Mounts in GW2 would need to make changes for one there would need to be more horizontal land mass and two most of the waypoints removed.

Again complete nonsense. The land mass is big enough, and why would you need to remove waypoints? Waypoints would still be the fastest way to get from point A to point B.

People keep bringing up the mounts for asthetic reasons. I think it would ruin the asthetic beauty of the game honestly. Especially when dealing with the constant threat of being thrown into combat when running around the world.

Mounted combat wouldn’t make sense given how the game is designed. The mounts just suddenly disappearing when you enter combat would also just look dumb.

I can’t really think of anything that would be added to the game by implementing them.

There should be mounted combat on the ground and in the air.

An aerial combat similar to the underwater combat would be awesome addition to the game: new flying foes from which the harpies won’t miss out to appear, new dangers “raining” from the sky onto the ground – using certain skills in the air will affect the things in the ground too mostly visually than effectively

Now, don’t think of flying mounts only as living animals/birds. Some can be any sort of technology like hoverboards, jetpacks, deltaplane etc

I Agree with this post and the endless post about this. Mount would add more beauty and RPG feel to this great game. It be great if they open the skies like mention here, with mount or other wise, the maps and scenarios of this game are so beautiful flying through them would add such a perfect touch to the game.

Then again they haven’t given us a bare-hand attacks, capes, just silly stuff to put in your back which I for one hide it always, haven’t like not even one or even the fable companion system from GW1.

We could be see all this in a far future as it is well KNOWN that this brings a LOT of cash in the store! People love eye candy. NW game is one of this games that have prove this and EXPLOITED this shamelessly, but they don’t even deliver as much quality as GW2. I guess we would have to wait and see maybe we will get the Battle ready mounts who knows, right.

Seriously ANet, still no mounts?

I think I speak for everyone when I say, it’s not even about the movement speed. Mounts look cool and they are something fun to collect. Not to mention the fun to be had, when more than one person can ride on one mount.

This game is supposed to be all about teamwork correct? I get that speed increases would change the entire dynamic of wvwvw… but why cut out typical mmo content that everybody loves?

I think it would add a whole new dynamic to the game, especially wvw, making it much more interesting. Just imagine the possibilities:

-different species of mounts, each with their own strengths and weaknesses.
-while riding your mount, have access to unique mount-based skills.
-the ability to level up your mount, unlocking new skills/improving effectiveness.
-Customizable armor for your mount
-new weapon class, such as a lance, that is designed to be wielded when you get on your mount (similar to how you automatically switch to underwater weapons when you dive below the surface).
-The ability to move siege from place to place in wvw using teams of mounts.
-new wvw trap that covers the ground with caltrops that deal extra damage to mounts and slow them down.

I’ll come back and add any new ideas that I have later.
Now, I do realize that this could upset the balance in wvw, so here’s some ideas on how to balance things out:
-just like with your characters, you can customize your mount, but you will have to make trade-offs such as sacrificing your mount’kitten points in favor of a extra speed.
-Implementing a lengthy cool-down (maybe 30 minutes-1 hour)for summoning your mount that goes into effect once it dies. This would prevent perma-mount zergs from rolling over everything in wvw. The cool down should be account bound.
-mounts are penalized when fighting in towers/keeps.
-when your mount dies in a fight, you are knocked down.
-if you are hit while riding a mount, you both take damage (instead of your mount tanking damage for you)

These are just some ideas I thought of in under 10 minutes, so I’m sure there are heaps of other cool ideas for mounts out there, and if love to hear them. To any Anet dev who is reading this: yes I realize that it is highly unlikely that you will implement mounts in gw2 (at least not in the near future) and that there is a chance that performance could suffer as a direct result from mounts. However, from having approached many people on this subject,I think that it’s safe to say that the vast majority of those who play gw2 are looking for something new like this (or maybe additional classes?) to keep the game fresh and interesting. My understanding is that most players would be much happier if Anet was working on something new and exciting, such as mounts, instead of disappointing us every two weeks with their living world content.

I think mounts would be a welcome addition to this game with proper implementation.

Most of us have proven by this point that we can maintain swiftness boons for the purposes of travel. 100% uptime of swiftness via different traits, weapon swapping, using certain utilities, etc. So, why not give us a hassle free way to maintain 100% swiftness uptime, via mounts?

Regular swiftness boons would still have their place in group play, as i imagine mounts would give yourself swiftness where as your abilities would give yourself and others swiftness.

TL;DR I see mounts as a good replacement for having to manually upkeep swiftness boons for travel purposes.

WoW had mounts and the fast (slow) traveling system for balancing reasons. I was not a WoW kid, but I understand that their equivalent of WvW content was part of the open world, so they had to prevent players from just porting over to enemy attackers so that response time was a factor. WoW guys, am I correct?

But if you insist on mounts, I want them to be class specific. Mostly because I’m an engineer and mostly because I want to drive a forklift into battle. Those things can do lots of damage to your stock when mishandled. Yeahhhhhh.

But why on earth would you need a continuous speed buff… If we had access to continuous speed buffs then that speed would simply be thought of as the default speed and there would be no point in the notion of a buff…

Although of course elementalists DO have access to a continuous speed buff, and a lot of other classes can get close to continuous as well through the combination of traits and utility skills.

But the point is, Waypoints and the relatively small size of the map remove any need to be able to constantly move quickly. Mounts are EXTREMELY annoying – think about trying to talk to NPC’s when there are 5+ other people around that NPC all on mounts. It is difficult enough trying to see over a Norn, if you chuck mounts in the mix it gets very difficult to see or target anything.

In games like Tera, Aion or WoW yes mounts make a certain amount of sense because fast travel options are limited and the maps are rather desolate – but GW2 fixes both of these problems so they aren’t needed.

I honestly can’t think of anything else in game that is unnecessary screen clutter, unless you’re going to say trees or amour – which would be ridiculous.

Dev’s have already stated that they don’t want to implement Mounts and the vast majority of the player base is against it.

Speed is FUN, that’s why!!!

I have come up with a suggestion to fix the problem with the npc.
1. You don’t need to see the npc anyway because the “F” button is not broke, it works as soon as you get near the npc the “hit the F button” thing pops up.
2. If that bothers you that something big will be standing near a Npc, then it should really kitten you off when the Npc you talk to opens a really big panel that blocks your whole view of at least a third of the screen.
3. Remember that hit detection I was talking about, the part where when you get so close to the npc the “hit the F button” pops up, well they could add to the code that if anyone is mounted and they stand in that area for more than 3 seconds automatic dismount.

Mounted Combat not just living creatures I want a WvW map that is huge and is catered to fighting the good fight ala Mounted. I want to see those huge Charr War Machines in action. Maybe even flying mounts for combat in this area only. All other areas of the game no flying mounts.

Like you say not needed, but that didn’t stop them from adding Minis, Tonics that transform your appearance into other creatures, that would include costume brawls. They added them because some of us thought they would be fun. Some of the most fun some people have had in game came from things that was not needed.

My idea for mounts is more of like a skill that you place in the utility side of the skill bar and while passive you will ride around on your mount @ 20 to 25% continuous speed if you go into combat you slow down and all aspects of the game work as normal. Once activated the skill will replace your 1-5 skill slots with the mounts own skill bar and you will use those skills to fight with much the same as when a Engineer uses the Flamethrower or one of those weapons laying around all over the game.

No the Dev’s have never taken that stance and if you have a link that proves me other wise stop spreading lies. There is no prof that that Vast Majority is one way or the other, we collectively in this little section of the forums represent a small fraction of the games player base. That statement is also unfounded and untruthful.

I have to laugh at the argument that mounts are fun.
They are LITERALLY just a more visual version of a speed buff. You wouldn’t say “speed buffs are fun!”, and yet your character model sitting on another creature is somehow fun despite it simply being a cosmetic difference to your character running.
Screen clutter relates to how much they BLOCK on screen not how much literal screen place they take up. I play on a 1680×1050 monitor which, whilst not massive, is decent sized and I know how to use the zoom button – but that doesn’t stop people in mounts blocking vision of enemies, NPC’s, interactive items, lootable corpses, party members etc.

So, you’re saying you don’t think a Norn would look fantastic on a Glyphic Pogo Stick?

<straightface>

Just think of the missed opportunities:

Cultural Mount Vendors
Gem Store Mounts
Living Story Mounts
Achievement Mounts
Achievement Titles (The Horse Whisperer)
Mount-related backpacks

-all opportunities for ANet to make money and/or keep players in the game.

Let’s stir up WvW and put mounts there as well. MOST of the keeps have ramps and if a battle mount can’t make it up a set of stairs, well, then it’s not battle worthy.

And that adds one more thing to spend badges on: WvW model mounts.

If you’re gotten this far and your blood pressure is up, I’m kidding.

If you’re gotten this far and you’re excitedly going, “yeah!”, I’m sorry, I’m not serious.

GW2 doesn’t need (any more) arbitrary speedbumps, time sinks, or status items. That’s what mounts usually are.

Unless those advocating for mounts would like to remove waypoints?

No..The idea is that when you use the activate feature of my skill idea is that you Loose the speed you get put back to normal running speed on foot and slowed to battle speed when engaging in combat and my idea is to have a unique skill set that compliments the mount you are riding. Skills like the idea of dragging a downed player away from red circles to then rez them, I don’t know what to name this skill yet.

Since everyone could use this skill in PvE it would not make you op. In normal WvW you would not allow the mounts to fight. That why I suggested an all out WvW map that lets every conceivable type of mounted combat take place. In the Air, land, and Sea and on those massive charr war machines. Since everyone is able to fight on them how are you more op than all the other players. You don’t give credit to Anet in the fact that they would balance the skill set and make them skills work for the type of mount you are using. By type I mean base different mounts on the trinity, Damage, Control, and Support.

I think the fact that every character can pretty much maintain 100% swiftness up time is a good reason to add mounts.

Given the right utilities, traits, and weapons (especially with switching weapons out of combat) every class can maintain 100% swiftness. I think mounts would a nice, effortless way to maintain 100% swiftness without having to rearrange your traits, utilities, and weapons.

this would work ideally for solo play when your just traversing the terrain.

I understand that you really want this because you are a mesmer but that was the way that they were balanced. Let’s say my engie wanted portals or mass veil – I would have to give something up or be op. I don’t understand why you couldn’t live with a strictly cosmetic, small mount if you “wanna look kewl”. With no speed boost and given the option to not have to see it have all the stupid mounts you want. As a final note there is no way i can give Anet credit for balancing anything.

Three reasons we don’t need mounts:
1) This isn’t EQ or EQ2
2) This isn’t WoW or a WoW clone
3) This isn’t some other MMO this is Guild Wars!

Why we need better titles :
1) Titles are awesome
2) Titles are awesome
3) Did I mention, Title are Awesome!

Yes, the golden only mount for the Asura isn’t going to cut it for a Norn.

Curse you auto-correct!

Golden pony. The Asuran golden pony mount won’t work for Norn…

No the Dev’s have never taken that stance and if you have a link that proves me other wise stop spreading lies.

From the FAQ on the wiki:

Will there be mounts?

No. For traveling long distance, the game will offer the two types of teleports above (waypoints and asura gates), but the initial release does not have any other methods, i.e. there are no mounts or ships.

Dev interview stating there are no plans. There’s also a video of this but I don’t have the link. Of course this doesn’t mean no plans ever but it’s hardly likely they will. By the way, the first GW did not have mounts.

The worms in nightfall and the siege destroyer in EOtN. I would be cool with mounts introduced like that but it’s not enough for mount lovers.

In all mount threads people actually complain that if mounts are released there’s an speed advantage. I think GW2 could do it like they do with the titles. Sell mounts without the speed. Some people like just the option of sitting on a mount instead of having it run/drive faster. Set the option that people are unable to fight while sitting on it and that’s it. Everybody can then decide if they want a mount (from the gem store I assume) or if they don’t. It’s just an cosmetic thing but I guess that would be to easy lol

To the guy who stated the arena net quote on flying over content….

who said they have to fly…?

this is in the interest of fun, not speed. Mounts don’t have to effect gameplay or speed at all. They could be no different then skins.

Haha. Except no you dont speak for everyone i dont want mounts in the game perioud. Plane and simple. It could slow you down, only used in town etc etc i wouldnt want it in the game

That’s great man,… so why are you on this thread then…?

I guess you don’t like anything based on aesthetics in this game then? You do know that’s pretty much the entire endgame right now? Try reading whats in front of you instead of assuming things. "I think i speak for everyone (who is interested in mounts) that it’s not even about the speed (that they want a mount, for reasons other than another speed increase, but rather for an aesthetically pleasing addition to the game). Just like pets….

Slowing you down in towns…..?

….?

you must suffer from some pretty terrible lag, if your pc cant handle an instant.

A lot of people would be cool with that and multiple people have suggested this but it isn’t good enough for the true mount lovers.

Maybe a hoverboard a la back to the future? Idk, for me it feels like the game needs more aesthetics like this.
