Subscription for future expansions is a plus
Expansions are funded by gasp charging for the expansion! No sub required.
If GW2 goes sub then that’s truly the “end of the road” sign for this game.
if they added subscription AND removed gem to gold exchange… now that would be a plus
For the gold sellers yes it sure would.
for those it actually wouldn’t make a difference
I played other games with similar exchange mechanic, and they were full of gold sellers anyway. The only reason they don’t have a big presence in GW2 is that Arenanet is actually succesful at fighting them. Ever noticed that at the start you’d see spammers and get gold seller mails, but not anymore, while the demand for gold should have increased because of ascended?
Just bookmark this page, so I wont forget you. So in a years time I can come back and laugh at you.
Because gw1 had a item mall, and free update regular and paid major expansions.
So unless they magical change what they been doing since 2006, what I said will be true.
For me I would have preferred a sub to all the loot nerfing and attempts to cater to all crowds instead of 1. If it allowed for a direction and focus it would have been worth it.
Hell even more if it was like pre 15 patch and no dr and no gem store. I easily would go for $20-25/month for an experience I wanted to play.
A subscription on GW2 = ebay accounts and finding something else to play.

Just because a game has a sub that doesn’t mean that it is quality content. ANet has a bigger burden because they have to create content that players will want to play rather than locking them into a sub that they might not want.
Adding a sub would be the death of this game and all credibility ANet has with any customers.
I feel a bit sorry for people that can’t find joy in the act of playing a game, but can only find joy in a game if they know they possess the best virtual items possible.
A subscription model also tends to drive development towards time-wasting features. Those are required so players feel like they have stuff to do for their money. Look at any MMO out there with a sub and it has time-wasting features.

What exactly was involved in those free updates? How many expansions were released in a year?
You guys can cover your ears yelling “I CAN’T HEAR YOU” all you want, it’s not going to change the truth, either you’re paying that $180 over the course of the whole year, or you’re paying it in less but larger chunks, either way, they’re going to get that money from you.
Now, what the cash shop idea does, is let’s them gate content, access to content, and gear behind spending that money, meaning that set of gear you need to be able to do the new instance might cost you $20, that new instance might have been part of an expansion that cost you another $60, the potions and stuff that you should be bringing are going to add another cost to you, likely for the trade from gems to gold to buy on TP.
There’s also eventual problems of the group wants to do something, but there’s someone in the group that didn’t buy what he needed to be able to do it with them…
A subscription on the other hand, comes with the luxury of “Every other game releases new endgame content FREE, we’re not paying you if it’s not free”.
You guys are obsessed with this idea that a game with no subscription charge is free. These games aren’t free, you’re going to pay that money.
While a subscription doesn’t guarantee better content, it takes the freedom of the cash shop away from the developers. Remember GW1 was a niche game, GW2 was marketed to MMORPG players in general, that gem shop is going to become a very prominent part of this game, and after you just spent $200 of RL money on all that stuff, you suddenly realize, a subscription cost less money, and you don’t have to spend that money again on alts.
Free to play games aren’t as amazing as you think they are. Yeah, we’re getting decent amounts of new content free right now, but just wait til those box sales stop. It’s not uncommon to see 2-3 expansions / year in these types of games… And those expansions are commonly less than a free content patch in most sub based games.
And time wasting features aren’t the result of subs, it’s the result of “I have nothing to do in the game, so I don’t log on”, which negatively affects everyone else because that’s one less person to group with for all that stuff that you have to be in groups with. Everyone else’s fun depends on as many people actually being on as possible, that’s where grinds and farming come into these games (2 things ANet NEVER said wouldn’t be in the game, just that there would be alternatives (or a more honest answer, the same grinds but with a bigger range of scenery to do the same thing over and over))

Subscription would just kitten everyone off, demolish the faith in ANET as a company that can’t keep its word. Turn away all poor and younger players who don’t mooch of their parents or make a ton of cash. In the end its just a giant middle finger to the player base.
As a college student, $20-30 a month subscription fee would destroy me. Only logical thing I would be forced to do would be selling gold and my content to pay for the bloody subscription to play the 2-3 hours a day I have to detox from the chaotic day. Nothing says “FK You poor people” and “go screw your self” then going back on your word and catering to people who live off their mommies and daddies 100% or are the upper class irl.
