Seriously, I just spent the past 2 hours attempting to do the snowball PVP. In that time I have seen the most unsportsmanlike conduct I have ever witnessed.

No one helping their team. Everyone wants to be the one to turn in the present because.. YOU TIED an achievement to it.

Seriously?

How about:
Win 10 games as a scout
Win 10 games as a support
Win 10 games as a heavy…

Notice the win part? You made an activity that does NOT promote any type of teamwork. It’s too easy to follow your team mate, wait for them to get focused.. pick up the present, then finish running it in.

Also, getting the killing blow on a target? Seriously? So now we’re encouraging last hits like some MOBA?

I have loved almost everything else about this event, but this is a little over the top.

It did not take me long to get the achievements and I did not have to act against my team in any way either.
Having to drop an enemy just comes along naturally during gameplay. For me it usually even came twice in a row. So when I got the chance to drop an enemy, I usually was able to drop them twice.

The achievements you suggested might be nice additions, but I would not want to miss the current ones. Why is there always someone complaining about an achievement?

There are people complaining about the snowball fight although it is easy and fun.
There are people complaining about the bell challenge, although it is something new, fun and not too hard either. Obviously you won’t quite make it if you try clicking the buttons with your mouse.
And then there are people complaining about the jumping puzzle, which is way easier than the Halloween jumping puzzle, and still a lot of fun. It took me like 20 minutes to get it done. Once I managed to get properly past the sugar canes, it was a piece of cake.

The stop a present carrier is for last hitting, something that doesn’t exist in any other PVP activity in this game. It encourages people to hold back until they can get what they need.

This game was promoted with the following concept: Participate and be rewarded. Not, only one person can do this at a time.

WvW, PVP, Tournaments, everything gives a reward, albeit lower for the losing side. PVE is the same way.

So now we get a new form that completely changes the way the game is played.

I do like the snowball fight CONCEPT. The addition of “selfish” achievements do not promote team style play. Maybe in a week when everyone has what they need, we’ll actually see some fun matches. Now there’s nothing.

You may have gotten into some good matches, but in the two hours I was playing it was completely not-fun. At one point, the entire map was nothing but scouts.

I also played a support and ran with the present carrier to keep them alive. Does that get me anything? Nope.

At least those are helping the team win.

Wait until you see the other achievement, that encourages players to let the enemy team take the gift, and discourages them from protecting their own gift-carrying teammates.

I also love how people assume I do not have these achievements. I’m not complaining about not being ABLE to get them.

My point is, the achievement themselves promote bad team play. People want their achievements, they will do whatever they can to get them.

My suggestions were just that, suggestions. Go listen to map chat in some of these games, people are complaining, and rightly so. If the object is to run presents, then WHY would you let the other team get them first? Just for an achievement? How is that getting people to want to play to win?

I have no idea why someone would play a support class and heal your own present carrier when you could just let him die, and score the present yourself, and get an achievement.

Play to win the game not to get the achievements and both will happen fairly quickly. Scout is the class I prefer to play but all classes have their advantages. Don’t forget about the mountain shortcut to move between the opposing team areas quickly. Memorize where the swiftness buffs are located on the map. If you know the enemy team is going to score because they have a lot people escorting go ahead and get into position to secure the next gift at soon as it spawns. Play to win the match.

It’s a fairly fun place, I stayed for a long time after I completed my achievements. It’s certainly unfortunately to have unruly achievements.

I’ll admit, I started out playing selfishly and only going for presents, but I soon kicked it in because it was so, SO boring. Actually playing it as intended was so much more fun!

The achievement hunting was so utterly bad that teammates allowed the gift carrier to die, and instead of reviving all were trying to click the gifts under the poor souls downed state.

Really bad achievement design, win X games as Y would have been nice, but also tricky to implement since you can change your class at any time if you die (I liked doing that), so maybe deal W damage as a snowball, or reflect Z projectiles (heavy gunner #5, cant remember name).

I’m not much of a PvP player, but I got this in a little over an hour’s worth of gameplay. I used all three classes as they became necessary on the battlefield. I’m not sure what you mean by “killing blow”, all I had to do was participate in downing a carrier and I got credit for the achievement.

I think the thing is to not get overzealous about getting achievements done or getting “killing blows” and just help your team win.

WOW man. I play support all the time, and I was able to easily turn in multiple gifts incidentally, and I almost always let another player get the gift. Thing is if you’re really playing support then you’re gonna be backing up the gift carrier with heals or causing slips or turning into a giant ball of snow — but theres gonna be times when the gift gets knocked out of his hands or you’re the first one on the scene and the best thing you can do is to pick up the gift yourself and run it further away and maybe even right to the base.

Like come on guy, play it for a few hours (you have like a week to rack up a couple of hours in snowball war) and you can easily get the achievement. You don’t even have to change your playstyle much to run gifts every once in awhile and once you get the achievement you won’t even have to worry about it again. So stiff up a lip and get it done.

I have loved almost everything else about this event, but this is a little over the top.

The scoring achievement is easy enough to get. I finished that part during the first hour. Things are getting more intense as people learn the map and game mode. There should always be one or two people escorting the gift carrier almost the entire way to the turn in, because there are more and more turn overs with in home territory now than on day one. That provides extra opportunities to get the turn in, even if someone else makes most of the run.

Now that I’ve finished the achievement, if the final 50 yards are truly clear and free and I have an escort, I’ll drop the present and let them do the cap.

Now, I am stuck at 4/5 for the defensive achievement, which has me confused, because I got the 4/5 the first hour and can’t get #5, even though I’m constantly causing fumbles and getting the recovery. Is there some nuance I’m missing? Something I was doing unintentionally while learning that I’m just missing now that I’m focused on the win?

Have to down the gift carrier to get credit; might even have to finish the gift carrier. So the best/easiest way to cause a turnover, the staff 3, does not get you credit. I also solo’d the gift carrier 12 times (including finishing) as a scout before I got credit for 5 defenses. I have no idea what that was about.

For three games, I ran over to the path leading to enemy base and then proceeded to invis+snipe the enemy carrier. I was only ever able to down the enemy carrier and not actually finish, since their teammates would swarm and kill me off rather quickly. Frankly, I never actually contributed anything concrete to the game besides top enemy carrier downed; in the end they almost always scored the 100 points.

It’s an achievement that promotes that type of selfish behavior from people who don’t actually want to the mini game.

I do think these are bad achievements that promote negative values. For those trying to get the “carry” achievement though, no need to be jerks. The best way I’ve found is to just hide near where presents spawn, and then while other people play deathmatch over to the side, just grab the present and run for it. This isn’t always an option but I’m often able to do it more than once per match. I’m no longer aiming to run the ball in though, I still need to get three “stopper” credits.

Played an hour and not even get any one of achievements updated.
It is full of frustration if you need to play to get your achievement.

I have played MMO for 8 years and have enjoyed many seasonal events, always happy with them. I don’t remember having frustration with seasonal events until GW2. The JP in Halloween can be skipped so I still has the achievement. But for Wintersday, if you skip JP + these 2 PvP one, you can’t make to 12. I hate PvP and timed JP (I love JP which are untimed!). I believe that there are many players feel the same.

Please reduce the required achievements to 10 or 11. Don’t force your customers to do things they dislike, please, not in a seasonal event that everyone should be happy.

Personal opinions and experience aside, the op does have a point
The snow ball mayhem achievements do not encourage team play unlike most of the game tasks, achievements and dynamic events.

Keep in mind that feedback is something important, there is no such thing as a perfect game but it is possible to keep improving and learning from your own mistakes so you can provide a better event next time.

Two achievements….guess what: They counterbalance.

You imply that your team wants to get the present because they want the achievement.

But guess what? The enemy team wants the achievement for stopping the present carrier…. So any of your teammates that rush to the present to pick it up get targeted by the enemy team. If they’re not protected, they drop the present. Guess what that means?

A: Your team revives your present carrier, and someone else grabs the present
B: Enemy team kills the present carrier, and takes the present themselves.

If A: That person who grabs the present could be you, or another teammate, and then that person would be targeted by the enemy team again.

If B: The enemy that picked up the present is in danger of being attacked because he’s holding the present, and all attacking players have a chance to get the Stopper achievement.

Nobody’s going to “Let the enemy team pick up the present cause I want the stopper achievement.”

And if there’s teammates who are so obsessed about getting the present returning achievement that they act unsportsmanlike, let those kitteners get killed.

Also, who the hell really sits there looking for a “Last hit” anyway? I played at least 10 hours of snowball fighting and never once did I see anyone doing it.

I disagree about this game mode not supporting teamwork. Everytime anyone grabs a present almost the entire team is escorting that present carrier. Anyone not escorting is holding the middle.

In a gamemode where kills get 5 points and presents get 100….is it really a big surprise that people are going after the present as their primary objective?

When I first saw the achievements I though omg I will never be able to do this.
One hour later I had compleated both achievments.

Even with these achievements I see players just fighting eachother instead of chasing the present, during one mach I was able to stop the present 5 times in a row becouse it was only me and another player trying to run with the presents.

In sPvP I have noticed players roaming the map looking for easy solo kills instead of taking controlpoints, and it feels almost the same in snowball fights.
The majority seems to like to fight rather than capture and/or retrieving.

Personally I don’t think these achievment’s have that big impact on peoples playstyle becouse as I said I see more players rather stay by the damage boosters and fight than catch or stop the present.

I did them quite easily, but people were nice when i brought the presents helping me, I’d assume they already had the achievement tho, and you don’t have to “kill” you just have to get him down which is easy as hell with a scout.

However I do agree with you completely this did not promote any teamwork what so ever, anything else would have been better even “play 100 or 200 games of” that would keep people playing as well, but your suggestion does sound better, would force people to play something else than a scout.

I actually did let the enemy team to pick it up just so I can get it back, which I always did but that’s just me, and what I think the OP meant was that his team wouldn’t help him deliver the gift but rather wait for him to be downed so they can pick it up and do it themselves which I see happening completely, some people are greedy as hell, and it’s frigging Christmas, if that doesn’t say anything about the player base I don’t know what does.

Although the achievement was easy enough I also thank god that it was only 5 of each, as the OP said, concentrating people to do only a specific task instead of the whole game predictably ended up making most people deliberatedly ignore teamwork and taking the fun out of the game, why be support or heavy gunner when all you needed was say

‘let your gift carrier die’ so maybe YOU can pick the gift and run for it

‘leave everyone else to die so YOU can camp near the enemy base and snipe the enemy carrier’

I liked the event itself and I even saw someone play remarkably well as support just to help the team win, but it wasnt the same for every other player as they all just wanted the achiev so teamwork was non-existent.

ps- to get the stop gift achievement you only need to be part of downing the enemy, as everyone pointed out its easy with scout so the doing the achievement itself isnt the problem

Personally, although the achievements were the sole reason I was in there. My approach wasn’t so selfish. I never found myself wishing my teammates to die so that I could get the gift for myself.

I enjoyed playing the scout, after trying the them all briefly. So I stuck with scout.

If an ally had the gift, I would chase any enemy chasing the gift carrier. If there was no enemies chasing them, I went to attack other enemies or wait at the gift respawn.
If an enemy had the gift, I would chase them, and try to kill them. If they are heavily guarded, I would go back to the respawn.

As Sokina has mentioned, I found that the two achievements counter-parts with each other. I feel they were quite adequate, given the objective of the game.

I think it is a matter of convenience that the scout role is easiest to play that also helps with getting those ‘Carrier kills’ that forces the team into a damage mentality. But this does not mean there is no teamwork. An enemy who is down and killed is one less enemy to fight. It does help. Sure it’s not like a the support class healing or blocking projectiles but it’s still a team working to annihilate the other team. I never felt that I was alone on the map against a whole other team and that’s what teamwork is and was. And I never saw an ally stand and watch me die.

Personally, I felt no negative feelings about anyone I played with. So please don’t gun down everyone as if we are all on same boat, because there are people who do help.

here’s a fun tip: whenever you’re at the spawn, you can use the scout’s snowblind then switch to your weapon of choice to get a free burst of speed

oh yea, and once you get downed the first time, you’ll benefit from your pvp trait attribute bonuses until you leave the game. it will carry over across consecutive rounds

and you always benefit from the pvp amulet, but not your runes.

I agree that the achievements promote poor team play overall, but my own thinking is… oh well? The snowball game is good fun whether you win or lose. Honestly some of the best fun is when it devolves into an all out bloodbath and nobody really bothers with the gifts (lasts longer that way too).

If enough people care about the extra gifts you get from winning, they’ll try to win. If they don’t, just enjoy it for what it is. I completely understand how frustrating it must be to want to win when nobody else seems to, but might as well enjoy the ride as much as possible, right?

EDIT: And for the record, I’ve been seeing mixed results in terms of team play. I think, if anything, movement speed might be the worst part. If you’re covering someone bringing in a gift all the way to the end, you have no chance of covering the next gift because you won’t get to it before someone grabs it (so unless it’s your team and you want to provide mid-hill cover, you’re a non-factor). If the gift carrier is even a moderate distance away from you you won’t catch them unless they get bogged down in a multi-person fight.

If anyone other than scouts could provide reliable gap closing (heavy’s jump shot is too limited in range IMO) I think people would be much more willing/able to work with/against the gift carriers. As it is, the matches are too short and the players too slow for a good team dynamic to develop. At least that’s my thinking on it.

You have to achieve something – Not eveyone seems to be able to complete the jumping puzzle achievement and they’re up in arms about it. Why? You have to achieve the outlined criteria to get the achievement and if you don’t then who cares? Does it really matter?

I mean I haven’t even tried to get the kill the present achievement and looking at it apparently I’m 2 out of 3 atm… without trying!! o.0

I agree with this. When I was carrying presents, I had teammates cover my back and whack the guys chasing me, every single time. And, in turn, I did the same for them when they were carrying gifts and being chased.

It was definitely alot harder to get the “Stop the Carrier” thing, due to the opposing teams covering their carriers(which was teamwork on their part as well).

All I saw, for the most part, was good sportsmanship and quality teamwork while I played. Admittedly, though, I did have some crappy teams where we didn’t capture any gifts or anything, because people just wanted to sit in the field and rack up kill counts(but this is unrelated to achieves) instead of stopping the carriers, etc.

Edit: I should note that I did all of my snowball games on Saturday, so maybe things were different on Sunday and you guys got screwed with bad players on that day.

Play to win the game not to get the achievements and both will happen fairly quickly.

If you play a heavy gunner, this is manifestly not true. Perhaps if you play a scout it is.

False. I got 3 out of the 5 with the heavy gunner.

@OP: I agree. Originally when the event first started people actually played the game the way it was supposed to be and I naturally got the achievements through game play. It took a while but it happened. Now I go in there for some fun and find that I can’t get my teammates to help run the present (seriously I’ve been downed at SPAWN) nor grab it (I’ve had to grab it as a heavy gunner 3 times for kitten’s sake), when the other team grabs it it’s a mad dash to stop the present carrier without worrying about the 5 people shooting at everyone instead of you know taking them out and letting 2 or 3 take out the carrier. It’s no longer fun for me. I feel like I’m playing in a TF2 Valve server with all the terrible players that don’t understand the concept of team play to win the objective. And they SHOULD be aiming to win I mean you get MORE presents if you do. sigh

I hope that in the future Anet does tie in achievements to PVP games based on the type of gameplay. If it’s solo then solo achievements if it’s team then team achievements. Nothing ruins the fun than wondering where the heck is the rest of your team and why aren’t they helping.

[EDIT] Let me make mention that when I was downed at spawn I had 5 teammates around me. 1 Heavy gunner that was actually fighting back those attacking, 2 support that did nothing but roll around as snowballs (not once they did try to heal me when I was under attack) and 2 scouts that were trying to grab the present under cloak when I went down. That was on Sunday. Friday and Saturday were the best games ever, even if my team lost I felt I had a lot of fun because people worked together.

The achievements were really easy, I didn’t spend much time and before getting mine I was guarding teamates with the presents, not to wait for them to drop, but to help the team.

In fact the harder one was the “stop the carrier” because you need to be the one hitting the last (I gained many “most stopped” trophies without getting any stop counted for the tittle as one requires you to fight them and the other to deliver the last hit). But carrying 5 presents is really easy, I even had at least 1 carried with each class (that said, Scout is the easiest to carry presents, you press 5 right before picking and run).

Scout 5 is very useful because it does more tha what the tooltip says: It stealth nearby allies too, and also gives you a very long Swiftness (longer than the stealth).

Every time I went off aggressively to “win” by hunting present carriers, I was run over by “team” members who happily took kill credit from me after I got the carriers down to 5% health. Rather than help me fight off the mob of enemy or assist.

When I finished this achievement, I was still playing to win, but I did not go out for the kill. I had to hold back and “save” my assault until the player was lower in health. This after my “team” mate had blown through all their burst.

I imagine one could argue that it “evens out.” But it does not afford team play, in most cases. I consistently played as a team member until I was frazzled and had played for 20 hours without getting the last 2 carrier drops. It was getting silly. The “longer” the holiday has gone on, the more scattered the play has become. The disparity between good and bad teams has grown, even just since yesterday afternoon.

Package delivery was not anti-team participation in my experience, but perhaps others let carriers die. Couldn’t say. As long as I was either having fun (team play was present) or I was making progress on the achievements (hate to say it but they tended to be mutually dependent unless you got the first present turn in), I didn’t mind what was going on.

Kudos to all the good players though. Thanks to those who dropped packages at the turn in spot when I was escorting — didn’t need it for the achievement, I was just there to escort you safely. But I’m sure others appreciated it. I sure would have two days ago when I was still learning :-)

This “sport” or pvp activity, whatever you would like to call it, is fun. What isn’t fun is the way the carrier achievement divides a team from a team consciousness.
