Q:

Hi, it’s me again. You might remember me from threads such as “Human female combat grunts”, “Human female combat grunts” or “Human female combat grunts” from the past, where I posted them during the beta events.

While most of the recorded voice is absolutely fine, unfortunately there’s some that stands out, and not in a good way. It’s gotten to the point where I turn off GW2 sounds entirely, because otherwise I can’t play with my preferred weapon, and frankly that sucks.

I recorded them to illustrate my point, sorry for being so blunt in the video:

e: I have no idea why there’s so much blank space under the link, sorry.

Aside from being annoyingly high-pitched, they don’t sound like you’re swinging something heavy and they don’t sound like your character usually does at all. They’re completely off and out of place.
The hammer (mostly, there’s one skill that triggers them still) doesn’t have that problem, swords are fine, axes are fine and so are maces. This wouldn’t be such a problem if you could just turn them off, but they’re bound to the effects slider for some reason.

Aside from that, having to hear “Retreat!”, “For great justice!”, “I could outrun a centaur!”, or anything else related to a skill, unsurprisingly got annoying pretty fast.

Q: Is there any chance that the grunts could be changed or, if that’s not possible, have a checkbox/separate slider to turn them off entirely?

Thank you for reading and have a good one

(Also, pretty cool game Arenanet, I love it)

I agree My sylvari sounds like a crazy banshee when she attacks some of the grunts really don’t fit

The human female squeak noises make it unbearable to use the greatsword. Those same grunts that don’t even sound like they’re real voices are used for other things such as certain leap attacks like the thief’s heartstrike.

Those really out of place “grunts” need to go.

The greatsword is my fave weapon to use with my female human guardian. But I hate using it.
At first I thought the deer she was attacking was making that horrible high pitched weee weee sound. But still the noise happened when fighting other mobs. It’s horrible so much so that I use the scepter instead.

This needs to be changed so that human female attack sound actually sound human and no longer sound like a wounded dying deer.

I play a female Sylvari, and I would love to mute her. Primarily the combat sounds are what is getting on my nerves, but the skill-related lines aren’t exactly beneficial to my experience either.

Adding a “mute character” checkbox or a “character voice” slider would definitely make the game even more enjoyable for me.

I support this thread. As my first alt, I originally wanted to create a female human warrior. I deleted that character shortly after the intro when I got my first greatsword and heard the very noises demonstrated in the sound clip of the OP. These sounds are unacceptable, and I would even suggest that the bad sounds (as marked in the clip) just be removed entirely.

P.S.: While I also support a separate volume slider for the combat voices, I still want the offending sounds removed, because I have no problem with the sounds of other races, even like some very much (female asura, for example, sound just adorable), and don’t want to be forced to turn combat voices off just to be able to stand playing a female human warrior.

Yes, both female silvary and female human combat grunts need some attention, as there are a good chunk of them that sound HORRIBLE. The “bad” ones in your video in particular, have been bothering me since beta. They are squeakings, stand out in the crowd in a bad way and are in general, terrible. I want them to be removed. Sorry if I’m being blunt but yeah, they shouldn’t have made it past beta.

I should say, all the voices seam… wrong… don’t you agree? The quaggan’s are great, but the Kodan’s are too smooth and the grawl sound like 90’s yuppies.

I don’t know, the voices just seam wrong.

Completely agree that I’d like the option to turn these off or replace them somehow. The voice acting is one of the weakest parts of the game in my opinion – as the poster above notes, many of the voices don’t fit the characters.

I agree with the OP! One of my first characters was a human female theif, but upon unlocking the third ability-(Death Blossom?)- and hearing the chihuahua-like squeaks, I had to reroll because of how awful those sounds were. I would love an option to simply mute my characer, but removing or replacing those “bad” noises would be awesome as well!

Bumping this thread because I seriously thought I was the only one having this issue; nobody else in my guild seemed to notice the problem, so I had thought it was just something hardware-related on my end that was speeding up audio files or something.

I’d love it if they added these options:

1. Mute character dialogue (“I could outrun a centaur!”, “I achieve things; I’m an achiever!”, etc)
2. Mute character sounds (grunts and squeaks when chopping a tree, swinging a sword, etc).

Personally, the former annoys me far more than the latter, and I like most of the funny little noises my characters make. But — my sword-wielding female character usually uses a regular sword/dagger instead of a greatsword. Some of the sounds in that video . . . well, I think the OP got it spot on for the good, the meh, and the bad.

I’d just like to throw in my support for an option to disable the combat grunts or they could simply make them better. I find it very hard to play my female human guardian with a Greatsword for this reason alone. They are completely out of place and completely ruin the character for me. I almost start developing a headache after listening to those high pitched squeaks for an extended period.

I noticed the squeaky sounds today too.
Are they intended? They don’t sound like the character usually does at all. Sounds more like a bug?
