Q:

I’m frustrated with the “flat conversion” rates because the Euro rate is ~30% more expensive than the USD rate. The conversions in the store don’t take currency rates into consideration. 10 USD is NOT 10 Euros, 1 USD is equal to (currently) 0.78 Euros.

This means that Euro-users are paying the equivalent of 13 USD instead of 10 USD for 800 gems.

This means I’m paying 130% of what someone using an address that grants USD rates pays. A 30% mark-up is quite a lot if you ask me, because with the same value of money, for every three transactions the Euro-users make, a USD-user can make 4 transactions.

I’ve seen this in previous games, and it’s very annoying. In League of Legends the conversion rates use currency conversions so I don’t see why that can’t be implemented in GW2?

So the USD rate is without taxes and the Euro rate is with taxes? Is sales tax 30% in the States? o.O

The highest rates I’m finding are about 11%: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sales_taxes_in_the_United_States#Summary_table

Also FYI I live in a country that does not even use the Euro as currency.

As far as I know, ArenaNet’s European offices are in the UK. So their EU sales are subject the VAT in UK, which seems to be at 20%.

Thanks and thanks to John Smith for responding, as well. It still leaves a 10% gap but at least I understand, now!

So is there a way to pay in dollars? I would be more than happy to pay in America if that means I can avoid the organized theft called Tax. If it’d go to my home country I may be slightly more inclined to pay it but please for people who don’t live in the UK, at least give the US as an option.

What is this based on? Could I game the system by logging in over a proxy? Does an american Visa card suffice for paying in Dollars? Is this based on the home server?

I think its a misinterpretation that is backfiring so many game companies.
You “sell” a virtual product but in the end your “selling” it virtual ,in fact it is a service .
If you for some reason terminate my account or the game ,all will be lost i never OWN anything in real life .As far as i know forgive me iam not a legal expert this is still a gray area as there are no laws that force you to pay the tax but its logic that no one is stopping you as the extra funds are greeted with a big smile….
