No Diminishing Returns on the Mystic Forge
Game Designer
Thanks Linsey for clearing this up! It’s good to know that Zomorros just hates us instead =)
Thanks for clearing it up Linsey, despite some people taking their frustrations out on you, I want to let you know you’re doing an awesome job at being active in this community and provide helpful advice that we should all appreciate. Thanks again and keep doing what you’re doing as well as the rest of the team.
I’d like Zomorros a lot more if I could feed him all those Locked Black Lion Chests that I keep getting all over the place…you’d think that with all the stuff that people have been throwing into his forge that he’s have enough cash to buy the keys to make use of them…but even he doesn’t want them.
I’m sorry but this just doesn’t make sense, or there is a very well hidden bug. I have personally experienced a DR on the MF multiple times. It is very easy to test. Buy 500 large scales from the TP. Convert them to Armored scales. Do this once a day, your results will look like this:
12-12-10-9-8-8-8-6-6-6
It doesn’t even vary. You’ll get an occasional extra high or extra low number, but the pattern is the same every time you do it. Please look at this more extensively.
Zudet, please take a statistics class to learn why 10 is a horrible, horrible sample size. It’s a common mistake a large amount of the community makes. Seeing diminishing returns on a very small sample size is also known as bad luck.
Also, if you’re going to quote numbers, use all of them, not just one set of numbers and then saying it happens every time. That allows others to check your facts.
Multiple people on different forums have reported those exact same numbers on up-tiering materials. Considering the wealth of data that all show the same pattern, and ArenaNet’s tendency to put out wrong information, I’m inclined to agree that there is in fact DR on the Mystic Forge.
Combined with the ultra-heavy-handed nerfs to the chance to up-tier weapons and this is really really ridiculous.
It seems that you only get rewarded in this game if you’re a cheating exploiter (like all the people that made thousands of gold and dozens of legendary precursors for themselves with the Godskull exploit and had absolutely nothing done to them). Don’t bother trying to get anything legitimately because ArenaNet will make sure to nerf the chances right out from under you, or slap some insane diminishing returns system on it.
<3 Lindsey Yeah Thanks for the Post!

of a vanquished opponent.
This is a blatant lie. Made conversions and they follow the same pattern as stated. Decreasing amount of return.

Yep, my guess is they just don’t want to deal with the storm of (justified) outrage if they actually admitted to putting DR on the Mystic Forge and so would rather make things up.
In my experience with upconverting I have also run into the problem of DR to the extent where I would just stop.
I have seen software developers swear blind that a bug does not exist until they have been convinced to test it themselves and see the evidence of the bug in person. Linsey, I would appeal to you to actually test this out on a dev client rather than relying on how you and other developers believe it is opperating.
I’m not going to be putting anything into the Forge until this DR is removed entirely.
It’s absolutely absurd in the most extreme sense of the word to put diminishing returns on a gambling system that is already so heavily nerfed that it will effectively never give you anything other than one of the same 4 items you put in.
I won’t deny that there could be a bug of some kind, and they should fix it if there is one. However, there is no reason for ArenaNet to have a DR system on the mystic forge. It simply wouldn’t make sense.
The reason DR systems exist is to protect the economy from huge influxes of currency, or of certain items. However, the Mystic Forge does not create currency, nor cause the creation of currency. Currency only comes from direct money drops, or from the vendoring of junk item drops (including stuff like white/blue/green items, etc.).
Any transformative action, like crafting, salvaging, opening loot bags/chests, or mystic forging, is already inherently limited by the supply of the input items you need for the transformation. Moreover, diminishing returns simply don’t achieve very much at all for transformative actions, because they are not at all time-consuming and you can easily spread the effort over, say, 100 different accounts.

The ever wonderful world of people believing what they want to believe, no matter what they’re told and no matter what evidence there is or there is lacking. Link to the evidence of this supposed DR with people who have used sufficient data gathering and proper methods and controls please.
I say if people want to believe there is DR on the MF despite a topic started by a dev that states definitively that there is no DR on the MF, then let them.
Let them cheat themselves out of opportunities the MF provides. More money the rest of us can earn because of it.
