This is a very important question. There needs to be quality control of some sort for mentors.

Some suggestions for this….

Before being added to the guild roster/forum list as an Arah mentor, you must pass the DnT/LOD trial of a 3-man Arah p2. Or the rT trial of solo’ing Lupi Although ppl might complain that’s too strict.

Before being added the guild roster/forum list as a meta mentor, you must demonstrate knowledge of every meta. This could be done in two ways: 1) a thorough, lengthy quiz of all meta specs, traits, rotations, gear, etc. for every class (you’ve got to have it all memorized); and/or 2) running those meta builds in a variety of dungeons to show the optimal ways each should be played in each dungeon (not every path, just the ones people do more frequently: CoF 1/2, all AC, all CoE, SE 1/3, TA up&fwd, CM 3, HotW 1, Arah 2/3.)

As to who would do it? Unless someone comes up with a better idea, I’d have the rT and SC guys do it for the EU servers, and the DnT and LOD guys do it for the NA servers. Assuming they’d volunteer (I dunno, they might be busy). They could view it as a recruitment opportunity.

I think we only have 2 Arah Mentors at the moment. I have run with both of them and they rock! For meta mentors, I either rely on their affiliations (rT/DnT/LOD/IX) or based on my experience running with them.

There is no restrictions to become a general mentor, as long as the mentor is knowledgeable with their niche.

By the way, for the mentors, I think that testing our teachers might be a good idea, but I definitely do not think that it should be too pressured or exclusive. If we make it that way, it would scare off helpers. I think we should be aware that not all students are going to want to do meta (though I think it should be encouraged). Having some mentors who are able to do groups regardless of method (no exploits ofc) might be good.

But I don’t know. “General mentor” I think is a good place for those folks to be.

It may be hard to invest that much time into completing a trial system for mentors as well, many of us from speedrun guilds are busy enough with our own trials

Well for those already in speedrun guilds. Its pretty safe to assume they know what they are talking about. For the others it depends what type of mentor they are trying to be. Not all need to be intensively screened. You could just gather feedback from the players that get led through by them.

From an outside observer. I think this would be the best. Check what they put down as dungeons they are comfortable teaching. Then verbally ask them random encounters throughout the dungeon and see how they respond to it.

Like what would you tell your guardian, your ele and your warrior teammates to do against X boss or champ.

Then the teacher would say, Guardian should bring WoR, SoA, and whatever. He should pop wall right at the beginning blah blah. The ele should: blah blah.

These types of questions would allow you to see how well they know the dungeons. Just a suggestion from an outside observer. I’d like to be a mentor, but no one got time for that.

Just to let new folks know: When you accept the invitation, new members are set as Student. If you are not Students, please inform any of the mentors, me or Lilith so we can adjust your Mentor ranks. I saw some newly invited have left the guild, and I would like to know why

Hi i would LOVE to join in on this, its 1 thing i really love to do in MMO’s and havent had a great deal of opportunity to do so in GW2 and to be able to learn and grow as a player in the dungeons would be awesome and greatly appreciated am an Australian on the NA Shard Sea of Sorrows and would be thrilled to get an invite to the guild!!

Being a leader of a hardcore guild, I do not have that much time (since i’m organizing trials / record run attempts). I ask for people who are open-minded and ready to take advices since the tactics I use might be different from pugs. I also want you to use the meta build with at least exotic gear (doesn’t matter if you don’t have scholar runes, ruby orbs are fine). The runs I do will most likely have someone from my guild or another mentor to come with me.

Would also like to clarify that all Meta/General Mentors (if specified) are competent at the likes of Arah, don’t feel like you can only ask the Arah Mentors if you’re interested in that dungeon

I agree with Anierna regarding the rate at which we’re accepting mentors, there needs to be some sort of method to find out if they’re… well… Mentor “material” I suppose.
I feel Arah mentors should be trialled in Arah before being accepted into that rank, same with Meta mentors being trialled in whatever their specialised dungeon is, which could very well be Arah as well.
I want this guild to succeed and I believe maintaining quality teachers is the best way to go (lets face it, you couldn’t count the number of arrogant know-it-alls you’ve met in PuGs than run around preaching their cleric Guard staff camping who couldn’t drop a reflect to save their life.)

How’s about this? I’ll make a random group of mentors and students, including me, going to a couple of dungeons. After that, everyone sends me their feedbacks about the mentors in that group via forum message.

For example, in Arah, the group can be : “Me, Arah Mentor, Meta Mentor x2, Student” or “Arah Mentor, Meta Mentor x 2, Student x2”, or “Arah Mentor, General Mentor, Meta Mentor, Student x2”. Everyone then sends me back their comments/rating about the three mentors. This way, we can have some sort of trials during teaching, and Mentors can also learn from each other as well.

So the next time our Mentors are out and teach dungeons, please bring along a couple of your colleague and we get this one going.

Like Chuck, from an outside point of view:
Iris, I would suggest not to use too many mentors in a trial run. Or clearly specify who performs as a Mentor in that run. Otherwise it might get confusing about who explained what and if mentor opinions differ, it might get even more confusing.
(That is assuming/hoping only good mannered, polite people are participating. Otherwise it might turn downright hostile.)
Unless I misinterpreted what you wrote and you meant to do it this way already.

@Iris, how do you plan to do that type of thing for EU mentors?

I imagine just one qualified person could act as a chaperone for new Meta/Arah mentors. Mentors from established speed run guilds or who have videos are probably fine.

I am a fellow student and if you are like me you are relatively inexperienced inside of most dungeons. Since we do not have an official forum set up for this guild, if it’s needed I could look into throwing one together, I am posting here in hopes of gathering interested people who might want to spend some time dungeon hopping for an hour or two this weekend.

Depending on the responses received, I would like to go into some dungeons over this upcoming weekend for more experience and somewhat of a community builder. Please be aware I am not a mentor, but a student. If any mentors are online over the weekend and willing to go, I’d love to that too but seeing as how a lot of the mentors have outside guilds and their own speed runs I believe it is up to us, students, to also put forth some effort in on our own.

If you are interested and have availability, simply send me a PM through the forums and I will construct a listing of interested/available people and work on trying to set up some teams with specified play times of students.

Ok, so I had this trial just now. Our group had Dolan, Colesy (as Meta Mentor x2), Delmain (as General Mentor), me and Lind (as Students). First, we had Delmain in charge of teaching the general method of AC path 2. We all followed his guides, and in the end of the path, everyone gave me their comments. Then we had Colesy teach the same path but with the meta method. The path was bugged at Detha so we couldn’t finish it, and so, there weren’t any feedbacks to Colesy.

The reasons I wanted to have 3 Mentors and 2 Students in a group are:

• The two other Mentors, regardless of background, can discuss about how knowledgeable the tried Mentor is, and how the person handles his own group and draws out the best tactics for his group composition. For example, we had an experienced war, 3 eles and a bearbow in our said group.
• The Students can provide how comfortable they feel about that dungeon path, whether it is too long and too informative or too short, and lacking informations. Since most newbie will rather do many runs than spend 4 hours in one run to learn all the mechanics. The mentor has to pay attention to the time budget as well.

For EU Mentors, I think of letting Sandy to be in charge. As long as the group has at least 1 experienced mentor and 1 student, any trial group can be run.

If I get someone in a non-optimal spec, be it the dreaded bearbow ranger or staff guard, I talk to them about changing to the meta before I even open the dungeon.

Right now I refrain from setting new Mentor as Meta Mentor without a back ground check or a trial. I also would like to have all the current Meta Mentor re-assessed, so we can build up our standards starting from now. If all the Meta Mentor can give me some free time slots in the evening so we could arrange a couple of groups.

I was that noob bearbow :p And I want to get into the scenario that a General Mentor has to know his group’s DPS.

My bear is for curing the condi in the last Boss. And it has a fantastic name. That or we could go 4 eles + 1 war :P

The other day I was using ice bow in fractals on my ele, and it used a pet whistle for the heck of it, and it turned out, I was a bear bow.

I’m sure there will be mentors online that would be happy to go. Having the guild roster now makes it much easier for students to look through the list to see if mentors are online. Even if we’re in a dungeon, feel free to whisper, we’ll get back back to you when we can.

Dolan mentioned earlier that there are non-Arah specific mentors that also mentor Arah. I’d just like to reiterate that. I’ve been relatively inundated with students lately. I’m not complaining, I just feel bad for not getting to everyone in a timely manner.

Tonight I’ll be doing a p4 run at roughly 10pm Central (8pm server I think?), I have two spots open. PM if you’d like to go. If I have enough interest I could do two runs back to back. I will probably post here (or a guild forum if Nodo or someone sets that up) every few days with scheduled runs if this works out. I’ll also continue to do random runs when I can for people who don’t check the forum as often.

Also, thanks to laharl for getting a group together a few days ago and running me through Arah P2 and P3. I still need to learn Lupi and how to not die when running, but overall it was a great learning experience!

While Im flattered that you’d consider me, Im afraid that Im going to have to decline. Im personally handling both thief and mesmer trials in rT, as well as global management, and seem to be getting plenty mentees myself. If I had to spend time trialing within the mentoring guild as well, there would be no time left for me. Right now I’d like to focus on getting some videos up again, as my last solo was over a month ago .__.

Today 2 different players contacted me to teach them how to do Arah… however i never said i’d mentor Arah. I’m wondering how they’d get that information, since it’s erroneus.
