I don’t buy the nerf due to pvp argument… It’s pretty rare to see a spirit weapon build guardian in wvw because you lose too much by investing in their trait line, and i’ve yet to see anyone complain they are OP in pvp…anyway, i’m going offtopic…
…wrt fractals, i’ve not bothered to try them myself, but i’ve see how quick they due to mist npcs and orr trash mobs.
I think that was a joke speculation, but I think it’s more due to them wanting a hard cap on fractals and making fractals less dependent on SoA
So, you bring the example of the Volcano fractal. Let me elaborate.
You set down shield of the avenger, the next 3 attacks with firebolts, or the circles on the ground which drop fire from above or knock down will be directed such that they hit the stationary Shield of Avenger.
In the next phase, the fight on the island, every time I set down SoA, the next attack ALWAYS was a fire storm on the stationary shield killing it within 5-8 seconds of casting it.
We did these fights twice for the regular shaman and five times for the infused shaman and it was always the same. You cast the shield, the boss will prioritize killing it. No throwing it down while already taking damage. The shield will start shielding, it’s stationary, the boss will put down an attack that kills it. End of story.
This wasnt happening to us. Our shield of the avenger never died during the elemental phase. It simply ended naturally. We may do the volcano slightly differently though. We focus the elementals over the shaman, and they cant hurt the shield. The shaman I cripple, freeze, pushback, we fear him away, and immobilize too. Oh and stun I guess. Basically we stop the shaman from moving while we deal with the elementals. When the shaman is attacking us again, the shield has already dissipated, it’s job done. Similar things occurred every time it was used. The shield would last as long as we needed it. I fear you may be either unlucky, or using it incorrectly. When my guild guardians get on, ill ask them if they’re doing anything different.
The main issue I have with guardian is that because the class is innately useful, you end up with a lot of players who are clueless how to use them even at higher fractals.
I’m actually ambivalent about having guardians for certain fights at this point. On one hand they do have the potential to throw down the right reflects at the right time. On the other hand, most often it’s the guardian in the group that dies first because almost everybody else had to practice their dodging and timing furiously to get as far as they did.
Whats ambivalent mean?

It means in short: mixed bag.
And while we are on grammar, “what does” ambivalent mean,

A typical group normally DPS down the shaman shield then duck inside or behind the shield to avoid Agony Bolts while they kill elementals with AoE. Typically when you down the shaman shield, he immediately red circles the group behind the reflect as he normally would. This would immediately terminate the shield spirit and end the SoA bubble at the end of pulse.
There are 2 (or 3) professions that can provide moderate anti-projectile services but don’t have to sacrifice as much dmg as guards:
Thief: SS and guards are NOWHERE near the DPS a thief can dish out
Mes: Feedback/Warden and NOWHERE near the DPS a mes can dish out
My guard in Knights gear can out DPS my mesmer which is in full glass cannon gear.
My guard in Beserker gear can out DPS my thief which is in full glass cannon gear.
My guard in Knights gear can rival closely my thief which is in full glass cannon gear, but has amazingly more survivibility and enables me to just sit there and spam attacks, making my dps better than thief.
Idk why there is such confusion about guardian damage, we arent warriors that spam 10K 100b, but we are not light classes doing 1k-2k either. We use greatsword, we do great damage. We use mace/scepter/staff/1h sword/etc… we do bad damage. Its all about the choice of weapon. ( staff/gs ftw)
