Story time.

Yesterday I got online at around 8PM EST. I signed onto my ele, and the second I loaded in I had 4 whispers from various friends (and one rando) asking for fashion advice. I spent about 15 minutes answering them, and doing my best to help, but eventually I shoved them all off and joined a budding guildie’s fractal 11 (which I had to fill with Jerus, Salthazar (a forum lurker) and a pug ele). I decided, hey what the heck, let’s play my mesmer instead of ele. This is significant. Because I never do fractals with anything other than my ele. And I have 1700+ hours on her, and only 69 (bow chicka bow wow) on my mesmer.

Anyway I swapped some AR stuff over from my ele (I didn’t need to, but meh!) onto my mesmer, and having never done fractals on my mesmer, I had to think a lot about weapons and utilities.

Anyway, I portaled my group through the wisps on my first try (maybe that isn’t as miraculous as I thought it was, I’ve never done it before!) and we get to bloomy. I take out my 1h sword pistol/focus and after a super failed might stack by our pug ele (she was an Asura though so it’s okay) we headed into the fight with 6 stacks of might. I laid down timewarp, feedbacked at the right times, no one downed, no one died, we killed bloomy without an icebow (our ele was against it, I think).

So we finish, we get Ascalon… I replace my pistol with my shiny Belinda’s greatsword. I pew pew all over the place. I’m yoloing. I’m having a blast. The rest of the group seems to be having some fun. The ele has been silent the whole time, no hi, no icebow, but hey whatever yolo. We wipe before the ritual, run back, take care of business, and then fight the boss. Lots of deaths, except for a couple strays and the ele and I, I’m pew pewing the crap outta him, having my greatsword illusion beating him up a bit. We kill him, res our party mates, and move along.

We then get Grawl. Started the fight with 1 AFK and me ignoring the party selling some stuff on the side (it didn’t go unnoticed) and then i pew pew some more and kill things. Wow! Such pew.We get to the veterans and they’re so slow it’s… stupidly easy. We finish that… and then… Imbued shaman. Well. I was pretty certain there would be a wipe. Almost certain. But no. We’re doing well. Things are good. And then the last phase all but me and the ele are dead. I’m pew pewing doing MASSIVE (lol) dps, and the Shaman is FIXATED on the ele. All I could think was she was wearing tank gear. I couldn’t understand why the Shaman was just… all over her. But regardless. I get hit by an arrow, I go down. The team is cheering us on, but then is like “Oh no!” when I go down. The Shaman though… he doesn’t care that I’m down. He’s ignoring me. He’s focused on the ele. I rally as the ele goes down, pew pew him twice, and he’s dead. Done. Shaman done. We pick up the team… and move along.

Then we have the Molten Duo. I loved this party, they didn’t seem to understand what I meant by stand on the berserker, so it’s a good thing I brought my greatsword, so myself, Jerus, and the ele ended up getting him down from range, rest res, and we beat up the firestorm. Largely uneventful.

Why am I telling this story? Well…. If I had been on ele, I would never have been able to help carry my party. I know this because any time I’ve been on my ele, I’ve downed in all of these places. Even on the level 11’s. But for some reason, when I was on my mesmer (who used to be my glorified barbie doll, basically) I actually could switch gears when things went south (weapon swapping from melee at the shield bubble to range when everyone was dead from the eles despite my feedback). With Ele, I wasn’t able to do that. Because… I guess I’m bad at ele? Maybe I think too much on my ele? I don’t know. But my mesmer… I loved it. I had so much fun. I haven’t had that much fun playing a class since I started elementalist. And yes, I know that I handicapped myself with the greatsword, but if I’m totally honest with y’all, I understand why so many mesmers like it. It’s freaking fun. And safe. There doesn’t seem to be a safe weapon set with ele.

In the end, I’ll probably start running my mesmer a lot more in fractals. I adore the gameplay. I will always love my ele. But perhaps it is time to retire her.

Thats also the reason why i like playing mesmer in fractals. Its much easier to survive even when you are playing bad. And theres a lot of stuff you can do to make the run easier. I even prefer mesmer over guardian most of the time.

If you’ve ever run a fractal with 4 mesmers mostly enjoying their greatswords and your guardian ends up the only thing in melee aside from some shiny illusions, you will understand. (I know I have to blame myself, but ranging on guard feels so weird every time I do it.)
Don’t get me wrong however. One or two mesmers are fine, even great. Three are approaching critical mass. And four, well, yeah.

But I think pink butterflies suit Lilith, so there’s that.

Imo only one mesmer is enough lol. If I can survive in melee I’ll pull out my shiny sword. I love mesmer 1 handed sword, don’t get me wrong, but it’s pretty great to be able to switch gears just by switching weapons. I enjoyed it ^^

Yeah, it feels safe… but not for the ones meleeing and dying because they’re putting their necks between you and the enemy.

I’ve played (if i did it at all) my mesmer exactly like that too for a long time, sword+x and gs as an emergency measure. (Lately I try and use sword+sword and sword+x, with varying success. But I rarely play mesmer at all.)
So I’m not really complaining about that or the GS use in itself. Or about mesmers in general. But the memory of that run combined with two others consisting of 3 mesmers, 1 (longbow-ish) warrior and my thief/guard are burnt into my memory in a slightly painful way.

As a side note: As anyone who has had the (mis-)fortune of playing with me can attest, I play far from perfect on any of my classes (and I’m an old phyw anyway), so I’m the last to complain about safety measures or odd choices of weapons.
There are pros and cons to everything and sometimes adapting to the situation will net far greater success than stubbornly trying to go with what you’re used to/know what mathematically or theoretically is the best.
So if I sometimes come off as condescending, I apologize. That is not my intention.

You can’t expect pugs to be good and melee, so you have to adapt… unless you’re a guardian, then every single pew-pewing kittened huntard or water staff elly will demand protection from you. Yeah I can agree with this. I don’t think I was hurting the team, though I could be wrong, because the team was fairly ragtag and they mainly ranged in boss situations. Depended on the situation of course.

I think it depends on the situation as you say. If your team wants to go ranged being the only melee is a bit stubborn because if your game isn’t top notch the risk of you going down is far higher so you essentially force them to 4 man or come and save you a lot.
Of course this works the other way round as well. If the team goes melee and you decide to spend your time as far away as possible, well, we all know about that.
If it’s a mixed group like in many pug settings or some phyw guild teams, I think anything is fair game that isn’t actually harmful for the team. Unless the group’s description said otherwise.

Scepter is worse than GS.

The rule “if you’re all in melee it’s safer” doesn’t really apply against Mossie or Archie…. but then the if-you-melee-and-die-your-fault adagio works aswell.
Having said that, going “I can do this as long as we don’t wipe” kinda makes me raise an eyebrow. Let’s not forget that it’s a PHIW reasoning, it’s no good for you and your personal growth. I’d say “I’ll play it safe for now but I’ll do whatever I can to improve in the future” is much better as a mindset.
And I don’t care, I’d rather have the block/phantasm. We’re talking about crappy weapons and there’s no point arguing about which has the most dps. At that point you should already be going sword/x

Anyway, I wasn’t talking about swarm-mode safety in numbers but general teamplay. You go with that the team decides more or less democratically. Or at least I usually do.

And please remember, I AM a PHYW and in a PHYW guild as well. So I use PHYW reasoning to some degree.
I do however like to pull my weight as much as possible which means I try to be efficient. Which means that most of my characters are close to or full meta and I strife to get better at my playing skills (again with varying success).
In some cases I run odd builds like venomshare, because I loved that one before they killed basilisk venom in pve. But you won’t see me doing that outside of guildruns or solo content.
In some cases I won’t be running full berserker because I inject some knight’s pieces. Even in pug runs. Because I don’t have the recources to craft that many ascended sets (yet, it’s a work in progress) and in a PHYW setting that can make a lot of difference with my level of playing. But that’s the “worst” you have to expect from me.

Which is usually metaish. But in the case of not knowing a darn thing about mesmer before throwing her into a fractal, it means greatsword +sword focus ^^

TL;DR In some respects you could argue that I have that kind of mindset. But in a positive way imho. If this confuses you, you’ll have to read the wall of text I’m afraid.

I don’t care what build/equipment someone runs as long as it doesn’t clash with the declared party description, may it be in the lfg, the guild chat, TS or similar.
If a cleric/soldier healbunker joins a speedrun, they are in the wrong spot. If they join one of my nondescript runs, I don’t care if I get a condition mesmer based on confusion, a full water elementalist, a bearbow or a meta player.
I shake my head maybe at runspeed sigils that never leave the bar or if someone blatantly refuses to make an encounter easier by not bringing projectile defense/stability/blind/whatever. But unless they seem to be out to grief or are downright kittens in the chat I won’t kick someone.

Personally, as I said, I dislike being carried. But I come from a long line of main characters being tanks and healers in trinity based mmorpgs. If you didn’t do everything possible to minimize your damage/maximise your aggro output or do your best to keep your team alive in those cases, you let down your team. You become a liability instead of an asset.
Combine that with being a raidleader for quite some time and you see why efficiency is so important to me. It’s like in a game of sports. Everyone should do their best to help the whole team.
But it is still a hobby. It should be fun. If it isn’t, look for a different way to have fun. That’s the mindest I come from.

The hardest decisions I ever had to make as a raidleader was to tell someone their playing skills weren’t good enough yet to join the raid. Because if I allowed them, I would have dragged down the entire team.
We offered coached training possibilites in those cases however.

I know I had a few misconceptions about tanking and healing efficency wise in the beginning as well in pve in GW2, being used to take the blow and heal up again. I sort of evolved past that and started to adapt to the different style of GW2. Active defense simply changes a whole lot.
The other big gamechanger is: You can do everything in this game with any setup you run. It will only take longer (and sometimes be actually more difficult that way). In other MMORPGS there were often things that simply couldn’t be done if the equipment/playerskills/overall efficiency didn’t add up. So I’m way more lenient with other player’s efficiency if I’m willing to spend the extra time in that particular scenario.
Not myself though, unless I’m too drunk/tired to care.
I might feel sorry for someone who wanted to rush and “lost” a lot of their time. But only to some degree, because maybe a speedrun would have been more fitting for them than my little “px – i don’t care what you play”-setup.

So I do care about my teammates in respect of what I can do to help the team. I don’t care so much anymore about what other players actually do in those cases however.

In the end, whatever floats your boat, it’s about having fun for everyone.
So very often the easiest and at the same time possibly hardest way to make sure everyone has fun has had to be stated in this forum so often, it’s almost sad.
Find likeminded people to play with. And that’s all there is to it for me. You’ll have to put some effort into that first, but then you’re golden. But that’s the way with any other team/group-based hobby as well.
