Make All Dungeons Open World
I keep hearing about how dungeons are being dropped as a development focus for Open World (presumably Living Story – seeing as how new maps are off the table as well) content.
Well, why not integrate existing dungeons into the Open World then, as a way to make them more accessible, and remove the problem of them being forgotten content?
What is a dungeon, really? It’s just an instance
You could remove the instancing part, and the cut-scenes (alternatively, you could have something similar to a Vista at key points in the open world dungeon, that play a video that brings people up to date on what’s happened here before).
All of these of course would be post-storymode.
It’s an easy fix to incorporating something you’ve abandoned into the world as a whole.
If you’re going to focus on Open World, then make everything Open World – don’t just abandon it.
If I could make a poll, I would.
It’s an instance where you have relative control on most factors in your party where you get rewarded better according to how you perform. It maybe faceroll right now but it is 100x less faceroll than open world pve or the need to organize 100’s of players and have your success depend whether or not the zerg of players can follow simple instructions.
I’d rather have dungeons die a slow horrible death of no development than to dumb it down more to tagging to get credit or be forced to depend on alot of more people for success in clearing the content..
Question: If you’d rather “have dungeons die a slow horrible death” – then why do you actually care if they became open world or not?
What I meant was no one running it anymore and neglecting it, not deleting the instanced content and replacing it with mindless/organized zerg content.
What you’re suggesting is not a “dungeon” anymore, I kindly point you to staff 1 farming or jungle wurm for the content you’re suggesting. One is just pushing a button to get loot and the other one is organizing longer than what the actual content will take to beat with too many people that can ruin your run.
I would be interested to know if there are any decent examples of MMOs with open world dungeons. ESO had them, but they were awful.
There is one specific game currently in the closed betas stage which has no instances. Whole world including open world, dungeons, pvp, wvw-like pvp, and even guild halls are all on the same map. Best of all, it blows gw2 out of the water with how good the graphics are.

You mean Black Desert? BD wont mean anything to most people.
They did that for Tower of Nightmare, it was not that fun.

To quote my beloved friend Elite Koptev…No no no no no no no no no no no no no.
In case that’s not clear, I mean I disagree with the whole idea deeply.

I found it fun, but it still devolved into a train running from the bottom to the top regularly. It was technically possible to sneak past points to reach the third floor, if you could squeeze in past the first veteran/elite event.
I just think it lasted too long, taking up the story focus during that time. If it wasn’t attached to the Living Story and was a permanent fixture? I could get behind that. Especially if it required more than one large group rushing through it to get to the “good stuff”.
I hate zerg trains. Open world bosses that are champions/legendary are always zerged. Therefore open world dungeon bosses would be zerged.
Because of this… pls no.

I’m not thinking “zerged down” so much as what I saw during a capture of Joe Vargas’ time in ESO – where people would just sit in a boss chamber and farm them endlessly as they respawned.
Good lord, no. Every other MMO that does open dungeons shares the same problem: it stops being a dungeon and becomes a tourist attraction. Not even talking about a zerg fest here, I mean people will just sit there and camp spawns to farm dungeon tokens and exotic trinket recipes (and possibly the last boss for the 1g/day bonus at the end, assuming ANet doesn’t remove it because the difficulty is utterly trivialized).
Are dungeons neglected? Yes. Are they broken? No. ANet shouldn’t “fix” what isn’t broken, because when they wind up breaking it they’re not going to come back to fix it for a good long while.
Open world dungeons = bad. Never liked them in other game that had them, can’t see me liking them anymore here.
