Guild Wars 2

I only really recently started running dungeons, and while I’m having a lot of fun with them, I can’t help but notice that they have been somewhat boiled down to an art by this point of the game’s lifecycle. A lot of content (including interesting lore) is just skipped for the sake of efficiency and bosses are kitten because certain exploits exist. I am in no way condemning these practices, but it did give me the idea that just once I’d like to run all the dungeons fully, experiencing all the mechanics and lore of the dungeons as they were ‘meant’ to be played.
The challenge would be to assemble a group of 5 people and tackle every dungeon, killing every enemy in each path (including story) without skipping content or using campy/gimpy tactics. Less conventional build/profession combos would be encouraged, too. Taking this further, I also thought it would be fun, while doing this, to form a sort of Destiny’s Edge from the party (5 separate races and professions) and role play through the dungeons, taking in and discussing all the scenery and the lore as best you can. There will likely be a lot of wipes and of course dungeons will take a lot longer, but the idea is to forget about the rewards for a minute and try to enjoy GW2’s combat and lore.
I guess I’m wondering what people think of this idea. I’m looking for suggestions as to how to make this challenge a really fun experience and if enough people are interested then we could even form a guild for the purpose of facilitating these playthroughs.

I honestly think “meh.”

Most of us on this subforum have done these dungeons so many times that it doesn’t seem enticing to purposely play less efficiently and watch the “cutscenes.”

They aren’t even real cuscenes, they’re just watercolor backgrounds with two characters gazing from side to side and lecturing. It’s the laziest form of storytelling tbh.

If they bothered to make dungeon lore more appealing and cutscenes as awesome as the one at the end of LS S2’s second release, I’d feel inclined to watch. Since that won’t happen, forget it.

It might be kind of hard to find people that want to roleplay in dungeons, but it can happen.

Indeed. I think everyone enjoyed them a lot the first times running them. Awesome experience. During the next 100 times they become less and less awesome and you won’t feel like using up any extra time there. Efficiency becomes priority; saving time while gaining more gold.

You’ll want to be running dungeons with like-minded people, one of the biggest problems I see here are different people ending up in same parties. Since you want to take your time and enjoy the dungeons, avoid the groups looking for experienced and fast runs for now, instead make your own group where everyone is welcome.

Edit: the roleplaying part passed my brains somehow, ignore my post if it wasn’t helpful

There’s nothing enjoyable (to me) about dungeons past getting them done quickly and making money, I personally don’t find the storylines compelling or the npc dialogue. The scenery is so/so and nothing much to talk about unless I pushed myself to go full imagination mode which is something I’m too lazy to do. I think open world is probably better for that for me and even there I tend to get more fun out of trolling randoms with particle effect stacks and cow tonics while they’re trying to do the cybernasty in some discreet corner of a bar in divinity’s reach. I think maybe the LS instances are better what for you’re after? although they may be a little brief, they made me pay bit more attention to what the npcs are saying than the dungeons I suppose.

I think so. Good luck with this, it sounds like you should be able to find a group willing to do this, it’s a fairly common request. I’d offer to go, but I don’t really do the whole RP thing that well, lol. I’d love to explore some of the dungeon maps more (esp the areas around the traps in AC p2, or the maze of paths after the spiders but before the detonator in Arah p2). Maybe someday.

Just noticed that there is no RP subforum on here O.o Maybe the Story & Lore forum? Your best bet is probably to join an RP guild, as this may take a couple weeks to finish and it’d be easier to stay in touch with your team.

If you stick it out long enough you may find some people here, but be prepared for another few pages of “lol wot I don’t want that” posts explaining what you said you understood in the OP :P

BTW, thanks for acknowledging that the “fast & efficient” playstyle is valid :-) Most people that come here wanting these types of runs think we’re monsters!

Dungeons should be about exploring the unknown with a risk/reward system, not just kill boss 1, 2, 3!

The biggest issue with Dungeons is, they are always the same each time, same mobs, same bosses all at the same locations doing the same thing. Dungeons need random content, hidden areas, random traps, random mobs, random bosses, make players find loot don’t just reward! Pugs, players shouldn’t be the only random element.

Thanks! I did consider posting to the Lore Subforum, but it didn’t really seem a good fit there either. In fact I probably would have had even more whining about the storytelling in dungeons XD

Dungeons sound ideal for RP here – instancing solves the problem of non-RPers, and it gives you a traditional dungeon crawl with creatures to slay, puzzles to solve and plot NPCs to ignore. Though trying to type and dodge at the same time may be interesting.

One day I want to do a full story dungeon run, start off with the level 30 personal story instance and work my way from Ascalonian Catacombs to Arah. If nothing else it would be cool to revisit CoF for the Sohothin tie-in with living story.

Lovely idea! I’ve done a few dungeons with rp friends that had never set foot in a dungeon before … you can’t appreciate TA until you’ve rp-walked through the whole thing .

If you still have openings, I’d love to join on a sylvari guardian or human mesmer (or charr ranger or pretty much any class asura, if the setup changes ).
