That is exactly how it works. There is no limit on the amount of times you can kill any of the bosses. Have someone else open the raid and you are good to go.
The big rewards are only rewarded once per week. Bosses will still continue to drop shards – until you reach 100 which is the weekly cap.
Yes, the progress of the raid is completely determined by the person who opens it.
Later in the week if you haven’t raided you can actually make a bit of gold by selling uncleared spirit vale instances.

I’m trying to bring a second squad of new guildies to it and cause i’ve already defeated it i was worried i couldn’t
Make sure the person trying to load VG is fully loaded into the instance before anyone else enters, if someone else enters with a faster computer it will take their progress instead(possibly opening a different boss).
