"Rangers Can't Play Their Class"

We are the elitists. You will be assimilated. Resistance is futile.
Lower your staves and surrender your loot. Your casual and playhowyouwant distinctiveness will be ignored.
And all who stood by and did nothing, who are they to criticize the sacrifices of others?
Our blood has bought their lives.
I’m starting to develop a* deep and intense love for you.

Every decent speedclear group uses at least one Ranger.
False. (I wish it were true though)
world records, no.
but for daily dungeon tours, we have no problemo taking a ranger, people just normally don’t like running theirs in our guild unless they’re in the mood for it.
I would make another LotR joke… But all the good ones Aragorn

Lol. So awful. Makes me die a little on the inside.
Let’s do some other pop culture reference on the next thread that says "hate zerk/skip/stack/kittens/puppies/elitists.
For now… breathe in the win that is this thread.

Oh absolutely. I just thought the post implied that rangers were something you’d want to prioritize for daily dungeon tours. ie. you don’t actively seek out a ranger for your comp, but you want to prioritize including atleast 1 warrior, 1 ele, etc.

its going to be hard to top this thread
Aragorn was a sword/x Ranger.
Legolas seems to be the problem. That longbow 360noscope camper.
Common misconception. Yes, he camps Bow in zerg and for killing scrub players but he’s actually a D/D thief.
That loses all the credits. Sword/pistol to kill scrubs please! If I would say, Legolas is more of a Shortbow/ Dagger-Dagger thief.

I don’t like how he can go R/A while everyone else is stuck with 1 profession. You don’t see Gimli being all selfish and going W/Mo.
Well, Aragorn is in his 90s and Gimli is 120 something. GW2 is 250 years after GW1 so it makes sense that those two can only be a single profession. Legolas is almost 1000 years old….he was around back when double professions were still in fashion.
I think you guys would agree with the obvious answer in this thread.

Legolas is cute?

It’s worse when you see rangers in high level fractals. You have to ask yourself why they chose to repeatedly bring a ranger to fractals (when other classes clearly do it better) and why they bothered gearing up their ranger for fractals. It must be difficult for them to get groups too. The time investment is big enough that surely they would have tried out other classes?

Mmm. Legolas has Anise hair. I think. But blond.
I want elf ears as a helm. Please An(tifarm)et?

I’ve read this thread, I have a ranger equiped with berserker gear, mainhand sword, researched builds to find a trait setup for dungeons … but I still can’t play him decently. Is there any resource around that explains how to use your utilities and weapon skills? Do I switch between guard and avoid combat for the pet depending on the kind of combat (boss vs. unavoidable trash/skips)? Do I cast the frost spirit whenever it’s off cooldown and the group is stacked, or save it for boss fights? How do I handle my weapon skills? Turn off auto attack and only use sword 1 manually?
It doesn’t help that I’ve only got a very sketchy idea of the current skips and when to dodge in a stack either … I’ve done a ton of dungeon runs, but probably 95% with my former guild of casual ranged players and support characters, so while I can’t say I’m new to dungeons, I certainly am new to “efficient” dungeon running and feel like I don’t learn anything in pugs but only make a fool out of myself by messing up all those things I don’t know sigh
Lots of groups do not even bother to gearcheck or ask what your build is. As soon as they see you are a ranger they kick you. Funnily enough once you run with guildies they love you for being a ranger as they know you are capable and doing the right things.
Having said that, i fully understand pugs. A warriors performance is mostly the same if you are pro or simply smashing your head into the keyboard. So for safety sake, its better to take a warrior

As someone who switched from maining a Mesmer to maining a Guard to maining a warrior – I agree.

Even though warrior is easy to get good with, I’ll tell you now, the difference between good and bad warriors is like night and day, it really sticks out.

This is a good guide: https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/professions/ranger/Guide-PvE-Meta-Ranger/first#post3958019
Also you can practice on indestructible golems in the mists to know when you can use sword 2,3 & dagger 4 to evade inbetween your sword autto attacks.
I personally prefer auto-attack off so that I can ignore dodging altogether and instead use weapon evades(I find it easier to time weapon evades with auto-attack off) instead to keep Steady Focus(and still do damage while evading) as much as possible but that’s just my preference and it may differ from you.
If you are gonna turn auto-attack off, just make sure you’re pressing 1 fast enough so you aren’t losing any damage and slow enough that you can pause at the right time in the chain to use another weapon skill.
For running/skipping you can also practice using sword 2. Assign a key or button for “About Face”. While running you can press this then press sword 2 then rotate your camera forward then press sword 2 again(there’s 2-3s after Hornet sting to do this so it won’t be hard). It’ll take some practice but its very useful in conjuction with GS 3 for running/skipping. There’s also WH 5 and RaO for Switfness/stability too.

Just learn the rhythm. mmm mm mmmm mmm mm mmmm mmm mm mmmm mmm mm mmmm..
Every ranger needs to learn this, and it’s incredibly easy. You probably just learned it reading this.

But weapon evades don’t register for me between Slash & Kick with auto attack on
After mastering Ranger’s sword, you can apply for Korean citizenship and enter Starcraft league
Using the wrong weapons and skills.
Rangers should be bringing sword mainhand for their weapon, since it’s the only one that does good DPS. They should be bringing spotter and traited frost spirit. And they should be bringing cats and birds and drakes (I think? Not a ranger player myself, so not sure about this) as pets.
Instead we see bearbows, and we cry.
Wow. For someone who doesn’t play Rangers, you sure have a lot of specific ideas about how another person should play theirs. Just sayin’.

The sad part is he still knows it better than actual rangers.

It reminds me of that incredibly lame movie…
@Rasimir
Might be worth adding, try asking the Ranger subforum. If you can manage to wrangle the inevitable sword autoattack derail you’re going to get more ranger eyeballs there.
Do I switch between guard and avoid combat for the pet depending on the kind of combat (boss vs. unavoidable trash/skips)?
Yes. I’ve bound my pet controls to easily accessible keys. For quick commands, just recall your pet constantly (like for a quick skip.) Other locations like setting up traps in AC2, put it on avoid combat.
Do I cast the frost spirit whenever it’s off cooldown and the group is stacked, or save it for boss fights?
Once you learn the dungeon path, put the FS down for any fight that lasts for more than about 7 seconds. When the fight is over, immediately de-equip your FS to something like flame trap. This will kill the spirit and put it in to instant recharge mode. Re-equip it and it will be ready for the next fight by the time you get there.
How do I handle my weapon skills? Turn off auto attack and only use sword 1 manually?
Learn the rhythm of the sword and only press the button at the right time. Also for most boss fights you can turn autoattack back on because there is no danger. Just remember whether you have it on or off. For something like CoE, I leave it turned on for everything except Subject Alpha. The golem in the middle of the boon turrets is totally harmless, so go ahead and turn autoattack on.
Or just leave it off all the time you so get really good at the rhythm of the sword.
Every decent speedclear group uses at least one Ranger.
What did I miss?
snip And ofc, there are some kick-kitten rangers out there. But you won’t see them carrying bows.
I carry a bow. It’s around slot 38 in my inventory. Slot 39 is my Short bow. They just seem to gather dust…….
its just not a face roll class
Seconded!
Unless they add some new ranged class, you will se rangers with bows. You won’t change something that has been always present for past 20 or so years.
I started playing DnD before Gw2 and my DnD Ranger uses two swords. He also rides a Bear but that’s entirely different.
