According to the wiki:

“Only rings and back items can be infused. "

I presume it is out of date considering people are talking about putting AR on weapons? Is it just weapons that now have this option or can any ascended gear be infused with AR?

Im trying to work out the best way to organize my AR. Currently I am only level 29 FotM and would like to work towards at least level 49.

Infused refers to being able to put an extra agony slot on items.

All Ascended Items come with 1 (or 2 in the case of 2h weapons) Infusion slots.
Rings and Back items can however be infused which give them an extra Agony Infusion slot, which can take the upgradeable agony resist infusions.

To expand a bit on what krall said,

There are two different types. Ascended and Infused.

Ascended items (such as armor, trinkets, weapons) have a slot for you to put the +5 AR (the infusion you get from the fotm merchant).

Infused items are ascended items that have been ‘upgraded’. This new infusion slot you can socket the upgradable AR (agian, like Krall said) the ones where you can combine two +1s to get a +2, two +2s to get a +3, etc.
