What is your most hated build?
The point Khasandara is that your two category of ppl is really bias. It’s those that think like you and the others that don’t think like you that are toxic and don’t like fun.
I’m in either of those category for exemple. I believe in most of the stuff in that list (with some nuances). I can still complete stuff with most composition, but that doesn’t mean that I will like it. I’m not a kitten about it, but if you push my buttons too much with horrible build and bad skill, I will kick you.
For me it’s a question of respect. I’m making effort to make sure the run go smoothly, I’m asking the same in return.
Ohh I read that, but also
A) Those who believe this and makes the game not fun but just a dps-stacking race and sometimes a burst of rage if any of this list is not followed by the book
As if playing efficiently is somehow objectively unfun.
Personally most dungeons to me are only fun if I’m teaching someone, or if we’re pushing to do it as quickly and efficiently as possible, otherwise it’s just another run at the same thing doing the same stuff.
I “think” (Not sacarms) that I understand your point, still, I think that you didnt catch the part of the “and sometimes a burst of rage if any of this list is not followed by the book”.
I can understand that you want to run any dungeon in the most effcient way possible,
but I still feel that its totally unnecessary the Burst of rage for not following things by the book.At the moment that anyone (You, me, or any other player) falls into rage bursts, they totally forgot about how to have fun.
So either ppl burst into rage or they accept whatever you bring to the table? I’m sorry but that’s now how it work in life. There is stuff I won’t accept in my run, but I won’t burst into rage. I’m here with my friends to have fun. We may keep the bad pug, take screenshot and laught in our TS. We may kick him right up. We may ask him to change some stuff. But I don’t really rage and If I do it, I rage over TS with my friends not on a party chat.
@Thaddeus, I see you point and thanks for posting it.
I guess that I missed something while translating and for that I must apologize. When I posted my first reply I had to fix Point A and Point B twice, and in the last editing I added that there “was ppl who might believe, or dont, and can overcome any challenge” in Point B. (Can be checked with the editing note at the end, if needed).
I would like politely ask for you to stop defining what can and can not be fun for others.
Unless trap tentacle monster girl is fun for you. It sure is for me.
So is there any hope for those who actually play these types of characters and builds? I found myself on a couple of these lists with my toons.
I have a GS/LB Ranger and one of my pets is a bear and the other a cat.
I have a Guardian who likes to go Mace to Face with boss mobs and also has a staff or GS depending on the fight or role.
I have a P\P Thief but he doesn’t go into dungeons but is a lot of fun to play.
I have a Scepter Elly that really likes Fire.
I have others as well. Is there a class one can take to learn how conform? Or is it best that we never ever pug and only play with those like themselves in their own guilds?
This thread was a very disappointing read. To find out that all the fun I had since the game began has been a lie and I have been playing the game wrong all this time.

Sure, rage sucks, but personally if I’m doing say SE1 and the group tries to pull nokk down the ramp, I generally just leave the dungeon. I have no fun doing tactics like that and if I’m not having fun why should I be there? Some would probably call it a ragequit, but it’s more a dissapointedquit.

It’s not black and white. The list from J envy is strict and partially wrong. Something can be not optimal, but still good. And there is so many factor, that you can take something just for you that isn’t really that good and still do decently if the rest of your build is good. Here some exemple :
- Ranger Sword can be difficult to play. GS/LB is a relatively good substitute. It won’t be as good as Sword, but it will do the job. If by cat you mean Jungle Stalker then is all good and bear can be good in some situation when you need to tank a boss (like the final boss of HotW path 1). So if GS over sword isn’t a big deal, but if you are using defensive gear or defensive trait while keeping bear out most of the time, then it’s not the same thing.
- Mace is actually a really good replacement for Sword. It only like 1-2% less dps and it’s actually the best choice in some specific fight of if you play a hammer build. But camping it is as bad as camping sword, while Staff would be only acceptable if you use a Hammer build (and you use staff only at the start of a fight) or if you are in TA.
- P/P thief is terrible in dungeon, but who care about in open world. Have fun with it.
- Sceptre Ele that like fire. Now you are on the edge of terrible. If you ain’t using Lightning Hammer with it then I hope you don’t join my dungeon group. Sorry

You’ve not been playing the game wrong, you’ve just not been playing it optimally. There’s the difference. You’re welcome to join my dungeon groups when I PuG and as general rule most of the the “All welcome” groups will accept you.
The issue you may have is if you do you’re not going to be fast by any means. If you’re wanting to be optimal and fast then you’ll need to look at changing up your builds and gear and the folks here are generally nice enough to point you in the right direction for that. Largely depends on how you ask :-P

I apologize. I didn’t really want to derail this thread. I guess what I am asking, for those of us who normally lurk these forums, is how do people get better at this. Is it all just trial and error and screams of rage from others? Is it the videos that are out there, if you can find one that teaches and is not just a glory film?
I have lurked the forums and there is a lot of conflict on what is best but not so much on what is bad. It seems to be common ground. There has to be a way for good to help teach the bad. There has to be give and take on both sides of that though. The “goods” need to explain and not belittle and the “bads” need to pay attention and not be stubborn.
Again, I apologize for the potential derail. (thanks for responding to my earlier post)

I’ve found that the good people in this game often enjoy teaching those who actually want to learn. I’ve had the pleasure of being mentored by many of the people here and I’ve learned a ton. What I don’t do is tell them they suck and don’t know how to have fun. Just show a little respect and an interest in learning and improving. I’m sure you’ll find the same welcoming community I have if you (or anyone) do that.

Take a look at meta battle and try to figure why the build work that way, why these choice make it better. If you can’t figure out something, then ask for it. There a reason and a logic behind all of the choice that were made behind those build. Keep in mind that for some build, some variation were left out of meta battle.
Then you can try to figure out why some stuff were left unused in those build. You can ask why the community view them as ’’bad’’ or not the best choice.
Specific question will get specific answer. Broad question will get broad answer.
Of course if you can find someone in game (usually in a guild) to mentor you and teach you in-game and over a voice chat program, that’s even better.

I lurk and I see tons of people ask for help and it be given. Right here in these dungeon forums. How you miss this I dont know.
Or am I massively misunderstanding the questions?
I’m really afraid of playing with people who basically see faults in everything. What if I offend them with my non-metabattle.com builds and they rage behind my back and vote kick me. Dang!
If I want to be efficient, I don’t pug. If I pug, I tend to explore different things and getting those passive-aggressive tryhards in pug really turns me off. Chill out, bro!

I just wish staff was more than mainly fire. I mean you can get a little more out of it with starting in earth but there’s no fun rotation for it, just let out the hellfire and watch things burn.
DF to me is the most fun, S+LH is fun but frustrating at times when either I down or someone picks up the LH it gets annoying fast. DF is just consistent fun.
I’ve been campaigning for them normalizing autoattack damage across attunements for that very reason. It’s kinda dumb fireball not only does more dps, but cleaves unlike the others, on top of lava font and meteor shower. You lose too much damage on other attunements.
And it’s the case for all ele weapons really, it’s just with dagger it’s less obvious since at least you got fire and air as options. And scepter is just a nonstarter because of the hilariously bad autoattack damage that never gets improved because trhe spvp whine of a scepter ele with sustained damage in top of spike keeps the weapon in the gutter.
Water and earth attunement need help badly on at the very least their autoattacks across all weapons.

Well i think staff is useful and i find it pretty fun to play. Managing attunements to blast water fields, to provide swiftness, to imob and chill, that projectile reflect, and ofc insane dps. But the problem with staff is that you only ever need those other things in difficult encounters, and so i limit my staff use to arah and fotm where the encounters are challenging enough that playing staff becomes fun. (altho at this point not even arah…its become pretty easy)
D/F on the other hand is fun everywhere so i use it in most dungeons unless someone complains
I am a very seasoned pugeoneer.
Where do I even kittening begin?
Where does one start with what appears to be the decline of the species?
Keep in mind that this is the place that I need, this is my therapy after performing countless surgeries, many of which were sadly unsuccessful and resulted in the loss of the patient. It’s very emotional ok.
First I’m going to outline the source of the disease. Then we’ll move on to susceptibility, disease vectors, early symptoms and treatment. Keep in mind that the further a patient is into the disease, the more terminal it is which is why I’ve lost countless people on the operating table that is zerk only LFG pugging.
Many people, including myself from time to time, have a hard time comprehending how a patient’s logic becomes so twisted. What was one thinking when he traited strength in numbers and placed signet of judgement on his bar? Well I’m here to tell you the sad truth. Many don’t think much past ‘this sounds good and I like the idea of it’ and this is something that you will find commonly in new players. That’s fine. The problems are the ones that have been around a long time, and continue to think this way. How did it get this way for them? Well it started with that mentality, and then it stopped there. They did not progress. Much like an underdeveloped fetus, this is the extent of their abilities. They have and always will, play whatever makes them feel special and good, even if it is clearly a detriment to the team. I call this foggy eye syndrome, their eyes are so clouded with snowflakes that they cannot see the destruction they are causing around them with their headshot rifle, staff guardian builds etc. They will also happily join meta only parties and insist they are contributing, often convincing themselves that they are playing the biggest and most important role in the party and/or carrying zerk bads hard.
Then you have the people I like to call metabaddles. They got their build off metabattle and haven’t bothered to think about if it’s actually good or not. While metabattle is currently (trying?) to correct their awful dungeon builds, some are still out of date and sadly once a person becomes infected via metabattle, they don’t return to the site to see if there’s a better build or an update. So you have people from aeons ago running these awful builds, thinking they’re doing the right thing, and because these builds with awful traits and weapon sets had zerker gear, they think this is the best build possible and really good for zerk only/meta only parties. When questioned, they become immediately defensive and start claiming that metabattle is the one true god and will be kitten ed if anyone insults their prized deity. Concurrently we have the youtube ‘community’ who jump onto any ‘popular’ channel and immediately think that because a build has lots of likes and views it must be showcasing the best, most efficient build out there, I mean come on, since when can lots of people be wrong together?!! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jonestown
As for vectors, along with the sources we also have word of mouth. This is especially prevalent in large guilds guilds with lots of people. Everyone’s got an opinion and no actual facts. They get their bad builds from above sources and then spread it like wildfire throughout their guild members, this in turn is transmitted when they get out into the pug parties and start telling new players to run these awful builds, as they are the best. A common warning sign as an example, is watching a nomads guard continually congratulate himself on a slow run, by saying that his party members never got downed, and spam pinging his skills at what he perceives to be important moments that he alone is controlling. The new player is easily impressed by this and will take interest in running that build.

(edited by J Eberle.9312)
Early symptoms: These are very easy to spot and I’m sure your average player has encountered these cringe worthy moments many times. The patient will often start with innocent questions, such as ‘is p/p thief any good? Does staff on guardian do the most damage?’ Of course the answer is no, but then the patient will keep asking the question until they get the answer they want, all it takes is one person (usually someone else who is infected) to agree with them and say what they want to hear which is ‘yes, this build is good’ for that person to then become infected too. They will then cling to that notion and completely ignore anything else. Often times they will take to forums with these awful builds and seek further confirmation, completely tunnel-visioning through any rational argument and looking for anyone willing to give them a pat on the back and tell them it’s a job well done. This in a way, is much like a person with 2 voices in their head. A small whisper says ’it’s bad’ but a strong voice bellows ‘ITS A GOOD BUILD’ over and over until the small doubtful voice is quelled. Seeking confirmation from others is important in making sure that small doubtful voice kittens off and is never heard from again.
Treatment is extremely reliant on the stage of the disease that the person is in. For example, someone with 15k AP and a bunch of legendaries running a staff AH guardian with bloodlust stacks and a bunch of shouts is a hell of alot harder to cure than someone with a couple hundred AP and a thrown together build of whatever he thinks might work because he doesn’t know any better. Remember that ignorance is not part of the illness and is perfectly excusable, however self denial is a huge problem and often results in the terminal diagnosis. If one wished to treat these patients it must be done with care. Show them the difference, ask them to try some things, work them into it slowly. The realisation of what they’ve been doing wrong will be an epiphany that will hit them like a bucket full of bricks.
For those poor souls that fail to see the light.. The p/p thieves, the warrior stacked heavy only parties, the bearbows, the staff camping guards etc etc. Take comfort in knowing that not everyone can be saved, feel good about the ones that you did *sheds tear *

I haven’t posted on here in a while, but after reading this I had to give you a round of applause.
On topic:
Any staff guardian outside to TA lawn-mowing would be my most hated. I often cringe when another guardian (guardian is my main) joins my party cause 90% of the time I know they are gonna be camping staff.
P/P thieves. Just seeing one makes my eye twitch. We get it, you want to look cool with your two pistols (and probably annoying the crap out of the group with your dual Quips) but dude, you aren’t bringing anything useful. Yeah, you can drop the Black Powder but so can a D/P thief and they can make use out of that field. A S/P can cleave into whole mobs, where the P/P thief is single targeting the whole time. Put away the main hand pistol and be useful!
Sorry to anyone who mains a P/P thief…I just think anything is better to bring into a dungeon than that set. Also I am still a little upset that pistols got a range boost instead of SB. SB is so much more useful!
You all hate whatever you are not.
I love zerk -meta- and ignore it, I have ran numerous builds…
I run l80 EXP with builds which would completely freak everybody in this thread so hard and heavy they wouldn’t even be allowed into psychiatric wards after the experience. Why? because I can.
And no: I hate brown bears. And I rarely run condi builds in dungeons, and if I do so they have at least 2000 power. I really do not care for zerk -meta- as it always seems to promote builds of -people-, not characters, which are often very annoying, especially in weekends.
I’ll provide you an over the top opinion:
" Yes I’m so pro: I have twilight" “Oh I have Eternity” “Well we are going to make nice black blobs in this dungeon, facetank everything and wipe 5 times then leave cause we are so pro”.
“And we not pop food, do not pay for utility, forget FGJ and banners!” “Banners ofcourse: are for wimps”. “PS? what is that?”
“No just attack else we need to wait for the might stack. It could cost us 5 seconds.” Firefield, Lightfield, Blasts
“No we have Twilight/ Eternity: We do not need dungeon sigils.”
“Pull the boss” “NPC isn’t here!” “We’ll kill it”: WIPE… LFG: 2 empty spots at boss…
Fictive Quotes by: generic 1-2 k AP non-world completion zerk warriors with legendary GS in zerk -meta groups. (but it still holds for many RL players up to 20k AP)

“If you want to run a mace on your guard: Have Fun! Let’s go!”
“Ranger NP, Necro, always great.”
“Does it matter what build I run? No, Cause you know.!”
" Okay I’ll ping it, Hey never thought of that. Should try it a few times on one of my alts."
“If you run speedruns, you will have a build and be able to support us.”
“Not being bothered by a list of fixed traits and stupid rotations.”
“You know to switch and modify on the fly.”
“90% health on glass ele 100% of the run.”
“Max DPS? Who cares. Being alive and getting no dmg, ever”

“1-5 ele, 1-5 warrior, 1-5 guardian, 1-5 ranger, 1-5 thief, 1-5 necro, 1-5 mesmer, 1-5 engineer, just select 5 it will work. "

Farctal 50? Check. Ping gear? Check. Full ascended berserker. The two rangers proceed to camp bear bow and cast point blank shot on a mob under ice bow 4. Somehow camping longbow and using bear, the rangers are the first 2 to die to the shaman and ettin.
How on earth do people who have spent upwards of 500+ gold on full ascended and allegedly leveled all the way to scale 50 remain in the bearbow cult….also bonus points the guardian with whirling wrath on a single mob out of 3 without binding blades beforehand.
(edited by Zenith.7301)
I play with another ele and we can keep might stacks up all the time but we have to use LFG to fill our party, asking for full zerk. Something we have got instead:
Guardian, over 10k ap. We were full might stacked and even full hp and this hero takes his staff and uses skill 4. During boss fight. Autoattack with staff for rest of fight spamming 4 whenever it is off cooldown. Told him to stop that, we don’t need his staff mights and his counter argument to that was “I have boon duration runes”.
Met also another guardian, who also got high ap. Asked for meta zerk, this hero joined and got some weird bad build and somehow he ended up linking his staff; he had sigil of generosity (chance to transfer condition to your foe on a critical hit). Asked about this sigil and his reply was that it does good damage because of returned conditions. Told him that his build is no good for dungeons in any way, he gets angry and tells us we know nothing.
One pretty day we wanted to run manor, asked for full zerk. Party had nice composition but terrible damage. Asked what gear those guys used, and our warrior bravely linked his. Half of his ascended armors had runes of scholar, while other half strength runes.
Rangers who keep hitting from max range, no frost spirit no spotter.
Warriors who run full signet build, or take just one banner which is defence or tactics, whose only signet is DOLYAK signet, when they could swap this one for something that boosts damage.
Warriors who take signet of might over banner of strenght – because common sense 404 – of course it would not be better to boost everyones dps instead of only their own personal dps.
still prefer signet of might AND banner of strength….., unless I need to run dual banners…
My biggest hate:
Ppl joining a dungeon,
and demanding: you are ps,yes? I run PS np
and demanding: you run 2 banner, yes? Okay dual banner np
you run to 1st boss guards pop nothing, ele pops nothing, I drop 2 banners head in SoR, FGJ, mace 4, axe 2, gs2,and notice guard on scepter, ele max range staff, ranger on LB, necro max range DS#1….. Okay fail…
After kill: ppl get chest and run on leaving you with 2 banners…..

I’m still pretty new to the game, but in 95% of the runs that I do, no one else picks up my banners. After the first drop we have whichever I grab and that’s about it until they’re off of cooldown again.
I’d like to ask, are there good threads to look in as far as group synergy or is it just something to be learned as you play? Just rolled my guardian, love it, learning to use the symbols for additional blinds, etc, but every third post is about guardians overlaying Ele’s fire. Loving my guardian, noting that there are warriors galore every time I do a dungeon, so I’m planning on running him a lot more often once he hits 80.
Here is a good place to start. Start new threads asking specific thing that you are wondering about etc.
