melee is not for gw2
What? From my understanding, this game seems to favor melee players.
Just PvE favours melee.
where? try to be close to some boss or mob and u r oneshotted…. i m dont talk about orr farming…

Thought this was another joke thread at first but after reading I think he might be serious. I do remember when I first started playing that I did range quite a bit until I learned to play. This is obviously a L2P situation.

ummmmmmmmmmmm….. the first game that hates bad players
my mesmer is pure melee and I don’t have any problems. There are some fights that are more challenging as melee, but it’s not impossible.
r u serius? 80% of boss if u go melee will shoot u, and stop with that useless “bad player” and stuff like that
Melee is best for the majority of dungeon content. You just need to learn it and get good at it. You could try dagger/focus for a bit for the invulnerable and projectile reflection/destruction for a bit until you get better and then use d/d or you could try making a guardian or a warrior and have an easier time learning how to play in melee range. If you range the whole time you won’t learn much or get better and make more threads like these.

thanks obal for the costructive reply, i already have war so i know how to play melee, the problem is that with ele i cant switch weapon if some ‘not melee’ mob is coming, for example with war i have greatsword and longbow and i will switch if need, but with ele dd i cant change wepon cause i’m in combat, and if i will go close i’m oneshotted
There is abolutely no situation in the whole game where you can’t melee.
Edit: Objects like Jade Maw or other pseudo bosses do not count.

Here are some of the bosses that will all “shoot u” with 1 shots and every attack they do takes about half or more of your health. However they are all doable in melee range, but you need to learn how to dodge and use skills properly. Having good team composition is important for melee as well and you can see how a good group with a good group composition can destroy this game in melee.

I play with an ele that does d/d. He usually brings fiery gs and ice bow and falls back on those. He swaps weapons for some fights like scepter/focus for shaman. I don’t think I’ve ever seen him with a staff and he gets pretty kitten y if he sees an ele with a staff at fractal 48 lols.
You need to learn the boss/encounter. Most of these “bosses that one shoot you” have ample time before to switch to weapons.
I also have an ele. You are only locked to one weapon set during combat. I’m mainly D/D but will switch to staff in wvw if we are coming to a keep, or switch before a boss that I know is easier/safer to range than melee.
First game with players refusing to learn.
what the heck did i just read?
This is the 1st game since TF2 I actually feel punished in when I DON’T use melee gimmicks. ….I’m not kidding, it’s literally more egregious than Puff&Sting Axetinguisher.

Yea we all got trought this stage of the game when we first started playing GW2.
I came from WoW, played from the start, and bosses in GW2 where like a truck hit me in the face with full speed it’s like night and day… it was like WTH this @$#&%^ hit me for 40% of my HP are you serious I have only 2 dodged *RAWR! etc.
It’s not “bad player” rather its “unskilled player” this is not the game where You take hits with full defensive gear and stay still in one place spamming skills… here You must build up the character so it can migrate the damage not with stats like armor or hp but with dodge, movement skills, evasion skills, blocking skills, projectile blockers/reflecters or other things.
There are many good and skilled player on YT that shows You how this should be done, what to wach for, it’s all in the animation You have a second sometimes less to react to an animation or You are dead.
There where many topic like this first weeks after the game relesed becouse most of the players did not understand how combat works. And for some time it’s all about melee, You take more risk so You do more damage, and sometimes only SOMETIMES range for really specific bosses.

+1. I play staff Elementalist, longbow Ranger, and greatsword Mesmer and I get destroyed in PvE a lot. I’m forced to build Berserker gear, and I can do nothing but slow the enemy down until they get to me and 2 hit me. This game favors Melee characters, not ranged.
Imo your frustration comes from being as a dd ele pegged into melee range. Your frustration is understandable. I think it could be too much if a dd ele swapped to staff just after using ride the lightening to escape and continued to dps you so reasons like that are why ele does not have swap. Possibly anet could be kind and give pve weapon swap but I doubt it.
It is part of the challenge of learning to play ele better. Sorry for all I know you are an awesome ele no insult intended. Unlike other classes who have weapon swap an ele is forced to learn one weapon set at a time. A warrior might switch between bow an gs a number of times during a fight and learn both weapons at once. An ele is forced the first time using staff to go into the encounter cold without the crutch of a familiar weapon to fall back on. An ele is forced to make the most of what you have and to learn every nook and cranny of what it can do. What is the other class without weapon swap? engineer? Forgot about him….must buy another character slot. I imagine it is the same for them.

i can kind of understand where you’re coming from with staff ele (i find it horrible to use without a party member); but mesmer and ranger both have weapon swaps and very viable melee weapon/s (and in pve; ranger pets get the brunt of aggro… or did when i levelled mine… which was my first 80… so a while ago); so i dont understand why mobs destroy you once they reach you (and then theres kiting… efficient kiting means only ranged mobs would hit you anyway – hard to do with staff ele though; because you end up kiting them out of aoes)

Melee is riskier. If you’re really good at melee, you’re untouchable when you’re ranged…
Most of the time people think that it’s easy to melee, but the truth is that’s because there’s always someone who get focused taking most of the damage for you.
first game that hate melee players… some classes can switch weapon and use one ranged and one melee, i love to play ele dd and i can do anything for keep playing with that weapon, so i have to use staff and i hate it… pls do something about that
This game doesn’t hate melee.. You just hate your dodge button.

Considering the fact that the guild group we run go full zerker on all classes including guardian there’s nobody who can afford to “get focused taking most of the damage”. I’ve played guardian, warrior, mesmer roles within these groups, at no point could I ever afford on any of these to take more damage than the average. Nor do I need to since things die really fast.
We only use an anchor AH guardian for high lvl FOTM.
Your truth is plainly wrong and based on your own inexperience making up lies.
PS: AoE doesn’t discriminate. For a lot of boss fight like Alpha in CoE there is NO such a thing as getting more focused than anyone else. If you go down it’s because you missed a dodge, not because you tanked and took the hit for the group. sorry.
We all miss dodge from time to time, it’s alright. But don’t go into some sort of delusion that you’re taking hits for the rest of the group thus making it easier for them. You’re not.
Listen, don’t assume that every groups are zerker happy, I play with a lot of pugs or different guildies.
Maybe you’re the one who’s not enough experienced if you’re not able to know who has the aggro or just maybe you never cared cause your aim was to destroy all fast.
I main a guardian mix dps/tank and two cases :
- I often take most of the damages, unlike you I look sometimes at the health bar of the others and see I’m the only one who took damages cause I’m focused, so I must kite.
- I’m going melee and take 0 damage cause I’m not the one focused.

technically… alpha only properly targets one person with teeth of jormag (which is really the only dangerous thing about him), all the other rings are psuedo aoes; you can stand in the middle of them in safety

Pretty sure his ice AOE hits the center only so you still have to dodge/pay attention to which AOE he uses

Would hit everyone if they didn’t dodge. As for you riss.. I take it you never have a full melee group, never LoS to group mobs and forget about the fact that mob can also do cleave damage and AoE. And also keep forgetting that a lot of boss mechanics in melee range will just hit everyone. But keep telling yourself how useful you are for taking so much damage.
There are a few very dangerous things that are mostly focused, like some golem attack in CoE that looks like a laser that quickly downs people in a single target but overall if you melee most stuff is pretty much aoe/cleave prone.
lol; i used to pug farm coe alot; if i noticed he was targetting me on either my mesmer or ele (who both could easily survive solo if crystallised; and if the team werent… good) id pull off so the rest of the team could full on dps and ignore dodges (although if you run with all warrs WWing into a wall; it wouldnt matter; you clearly dont play very pug friendly)
… but i meant it as a technicality; i know the most efficient way kill him (i farmed it on multiple chars for months… then sold all my charged lodestones because azureflame hovered wierdly far up my back)

nope; all the aoes have 2 circles; only one of the planted aoes does damage in the center ring (the outer ring is safe), all the others do damage in the outer ring (the inner circle is safe); you can tell if the damage is going to hit the center because theres a diamond dust like mist in the aoe; as nikaido pointed out; if you stack then the damage hits all over the aoe; but experienced puggers may use the knowledge to safely res a downed ‘baddie’/‘newbie’; or keep them safe

I play longbow ranger and I kill PvE. Full knight’s helps alot. But I do agree that melee seems to be favored.
So you stand at 1200-1500 and auto attack while your team does all the work plus use a useless stat like toughness over crit damage because your unable to dodge the 1/2 attacks that might come your way per dungeon at that range and say you agree? Come on now.
Don’t forget to spam that point blank shot every time a guard uses binding blades for maximum dps!

Why in the nine hell would you kitten your own dps because people can’t dodge ? if they can’t dodge don’t group with them.
You call that “farming”..
If ur off kiting him around ur lowing the dps of the team too because it’s likely he’ll be off running around chasing and not standing still. Dodging Alpha is so easy you dont even need to pay attention, if a pug can’t count 1,2 dodge, then they aren’t worth grouping with o_o. Hell even if you do wanna carry them, guardian + aegis chain for the bads that cant figure out a simple mechanic would be better.

because often if i hadent done that the team wouldve wiped and it would just be me (or often me and another; i often had to solo/duo/trio alpha the last 50% health or so of fights)
- and my ele was d/d… which can play as a mid range fighter (get in after he does aoe with burning speed>fire grab(whilst backing up)>ring of fire>switch to earth>EA dodge>earthquake>start churning earth>arcane shield>swap attunements whilst channeling and pop an aura for fury>churning earth kabooms
… though it was ages ago; that sounds like what i think i did
granted its not massively effecient elitist farming; but i found it extremely gratifying being able to carry people through those encounters

^ as mentioned; get in; get out for the aoe
i got my guardian to 80 just before i stopped ‘farming’ coe; and did all three paths reguarly with multiple chars (200 tokens per char, easy zerker gear for my newer alts… i dont like CoF much)
AND TO CLARIFY: i dont mean its a strategy you SHOULD use; im saying its a strategy i occasionally used with… not good… groups

You know it’s bad when you explain to them how to do it, and they ignore you or tell you to kitten off, and continue for the entirety of the run doing the same thing. That’s usually not persevering at that point.

wait – all melee damage is at least double the potential of ranged. dodge makes all enemy damage moot. where’s the hate? as someone who rolled an ele, then a ranger, expecting RANGED damage to be a viable way to go through the game, OP is flat wrong.

no; most of them seemed to listen (atleast; they reacted), they just didnt seem to get it
also; i really hate rage quitting a dungeon once we’re inside, ive only done it three times
- once because 3 guild (not my guild) members kicked a non guild member halfway through a run to invite another guild member… i didnt feel so bad about that
- once in fractals (low level; was progressing my guard) and the whole team went and pulled all the ice elementals… which wasnt a big deal; id just had a really horrible day and though ‘kitten it’… it sounds stupid but that haunts me whenever i play my guard
- once in coe; the team did listen (because they talked)… but just didnt act on what i was telling them (one pulled the risen abomb; so we ran up to top – where you only have to fight the wraith; i was capsing all over chat at the mesmer to stop backpedalling else theyd pull alpha… but they still did… they all wiped (one died on stairs from abomb or zerkers or something… idk) so i ran off and reset fight (on my warr that timecant really deal with crystals solo)… then someone else repulled abomb… ran to top… mesmer pulled alpha again… this was my third character to run through coe that day, i just said ‘sry, patience run out’ and left… i then had two of the team member whisper me apologising; the mesmer even empathised with how stressful it can be telling newbies how to play… which made me feel very bad… then i remembered i also opened the instance… so… worse… still not as bad as the guard rq though… that wasnt justified at all

Then my bf tells me to leave because he cant stand listening to me cussing every 5 mins because someone’s being stupid or wearing magic find lol. Only time now I don’t leave is if I have opened the instance, I can’t get over that guilt, even if the whole team is full of complete idiots.

In dungeons I go D/D in most fights. The few I don’t are things like Bloomhunger where it’s better to be with the team behind reflects so I go S/F for the Swirling Winds, TA Tree bosses on 2 of the fights where Staff is better and Grawl Shamen where having access to another missile protect is just better for the group. Even on the Dredge Powersuit I normally do the switches and use D/D for better mobility and to whip the boss on the way past for a bit of extra damage. I would say D/D is fine for 70-80% of the bosses in the game.
What is the other class without weapon swap? engineer? Forgot about him….must buy another character slot. I imagine it is the same for them.
Less of an issue you get you first Utility slot at a similar time to getting Weapons Swap when leveling, and you can slot a kit into this slot which is like having access to a second weapon
So at I think it was level 6 or sot you have 1 weapon set and a Toolkit (EG. Rifle + Toolkit.. or Pistol/Pistol and Flamethrower) which you can switch far more often than any other class.
The truth of the matter is the Ele gets 20 abilities on one set of weapons, other class get 2 × 5 abilities. Even D/D which is close range isn’t as close range as most melee weapons, the Water auto-attack is up at 600 range which I wouldn’t count as melee.
I play D/D ele in pve and pvp. Very rarely do I need a different build to defeat a boss. Eles are so versatile. Dont look at the weapons, look at the skills you can attune to. Every skill I pop gives me a boon+heals+ etc….. Such a huge difference to my first character, warrior.

I love the fact I almost always have Vigor up and my rolls do useful things. You rarely don’t have a dodge when you need it.
