Must agree. The requirement is pretty insane given the time constraint. Hope they patch it to 1000 instead.

You will fail to complete the collection this year.

They seriously think that we’ll be playing this game by the end of next year ? With events like this ? Oh, hell no.

Instead of looking at it as “Boo Hoo! I’ll never get that many drinks in time” look at it as “10k drinks. Excellent! There will be loads of buyers for all the festive booze I get”.

And 10k is actually fine. GW1 anyone?

The effects on Nightfury and Winter’s Presence are cool but both items reflect the new direction of Anet, GRIND. The Winter’s Presence requires 10,000 drinks which will require players to buy them from the trading post as no one is getting 10,000 of them from drops, no one. Adding something cool is great but I’m skipping this one as I skipped Nightfury as both make me angry that these epic gold sinks made it through whatever passes for quality control at Anet these days.

This used to be the anti-grind MMO, that’s the game I paid for, you know, before you made it Free to Play. Look back at your old promo vids, look yourselves in the mirror and ask yourselves, is this fun?

This reads quite differently now.
https://www.guildwars2.com/en/news/is-it-fun-colin-johanson-on-how-arenanet-measures-success/

Um … even back in good old GW 1 there were two thing:

(1) Get through the main story and get to max gear and max armor without grind
(2) There’s stuff you don’t really NEED but if you WANT it you have to grind for it

Like, Drunkard or Sweettooth title or, sighs, Saviour of Kurzick/Luxon, etc.

GW 2 is along those lines, though with the introduction of ascended weapons they broke with (1). While some people will claim that the difference between Ascended and Exotic is small … in WvW it isn’t really, especially combined with food.

Apart from the “somewhat better” armour and weapon, though, GW 2 can still be played with easily obtainable armour and weapons – though you hit a cap in Fractals and people (!) probably won’t take you along in a raid.

The only thing that worries me about this is how there’s a “Only available during Wintersday” line on the achievement. Does that mean we need to farm/buy all those 10k drinks within this Wintersday, or we’ll be locked out again till next year? If the collection was something we could still work towards throughout the year (since the Wintersday Gift Tree in our HI pumps out gifts all year long), it would be tedious, but acceptable. But if it’s forcing us to grind gifts within a 2 – 3 week span? That would be too much.

If any devs see this, some clarification on this would be appreciated.

And 10k is actually fine. GW1 anyone?

1. GW1 doesn’t have this insane market of TP which is highly sensitive and easily manipulated. The price is highly stable. (Except for the price of certain unobtainable mini-pets)

2. GW1 alcohol only grants a title and nothing else.
GW2 alcohol title ties to an event related skin, which should have been the Meta-completion reward like the past 2 years.

Ok, I understand when people complain about grinding for max stats, or items that are required to have optimal performance, but cosmetics have ALWAYS been grindy in the Guild Wars games, and there is absolutely nothing wrong with that in my opinion. It’s no different to obsidian armour in GW1, you did not need it to perform to the max as you could get the stats easily, it was purely a cosmetic choice.

Anet has always had the philosophy of making cosmetics hard/time consuming to get, this is nothing new. As others have said, if you do not want to do the grind don’t do it. You are only missing out on a skin.

Unfortunately, Anet have started making max stats harder/more time consuming to get, which IS a change of direction from their original philosophy. But claiming that grinding for cosmetics is a new direction is completely wrong.

Obsidian armor doesn’t fit here as these are seasonal items. The short windows create a very specific demand spike and the materials required stop dropping after the event ends. The closest comparison would be Selfless Potion as mentioned above, which I completed and could have completed Selfish as well if I’d wanted. Both were attainable with dedicated play durning the event.

What Anet have done differently since HoT is make everything a gold sink while shutting off the liquid gold taps. Removing dungeon gold and requiring gold to open fractal encryptions as well as requiring gold plus tokens to obtain items from vendors.

They are testing the waters here like they did with the designed Fractal loot nerf. Anyone who believes the drop rates were a mistake needs only look at the time it took them to address it.

You’re complain about grinding for COMESTICS. They’re entirely optional, and no one force you to do so. No one is going to crap on you for not having one. You won’t die without it. You choose to commit to the grind yourself, and even though ANet has been a kitten lately, don’t stab yourself and blame it on them.

I’m not complaining about effort grind I’m against Gold Grind. Gold is what Anet have designed these skins to cost, not effort. Gold is an important point here because removing gold from the economy is how you force more gem sales. I’m absolutely against the FreeToPlay style since I paid for this game. Effort is OK, requiring skill is OK, making the game a credit card simulator is 100% what I’m against.

I bet this guys is making huge profit from Anet’s abusive attitude.

People are not complaining the grindfest, but rather complaining the short time period for such grindfest.

People are complaining that Anet move all the festival / event skins behind huge grindfest/ gold sink, which 1~2 years ago it’s suppose to be the reward for Meta event AP completion, which requires work, but within a reasonable range.

If Wintersday last for full year, and mobs drop them naturally, no-one would have complained. Too bad you have to do it in 3~4 weeks.

This whole wintersday is nothing more than a tradingpost experiment. I remember all the minigames from the very first Wintersday and beside the loottable nothing really changed.

Still I was really hyped for this event and I still am… it just makes me sad, that every item is just used/misused to completely change the market. Some people already earned thousands of gold just because of those achievements (runes, sigills, alcohol and candycone) and others now have to spend 1000% more cash than what they would have needed yesterday.

And then comes along the economics guru from Anet and thinks everything needs to be a goldsink because some people have 100k gold because of TP flipping and boom every 0815-modrem-event-item also costs 10g.

Yeah, I get your point here, but my point still stands. The item in question is only a cosmetic item, and while I agree it is harder to acquire than other seasonal items, it is only a skin. I was also pointing out that having grindy cosmetic items is nothing new to GW, even seasonal ones.

As much as I would love cosmetic items to be easier to acquire, as character customization is important to me, I accept and understand that cosmetic items are hard to acquire, because they are not required to play the game effectively.

Anet needs to add something to the game that players can work towards, and what better way than to add hard to acquire cosmetics? I would much rather they added things like that than add in ascended stat grind.

People are complaining that Anet move all the festival / event skins behind huge grindfest/ gold sink..

No, people are complaining that ONE skin is grindy to acquire. There will be other skins that are not so hard to get.

All I want to know is that is it really time gated? I don’t have the time to grind the drinks, I would if I had, nor do I have the gold at the moment to buy them. Holidays are coming you know.

Basically, I would be willing to work for the shoulder skins but at the moment I simply can’t. I would be okay if the amount of drinks stacked to for example, next years Wintersday event. That way my work wouldn’t be wasted if I plan to start working on the shoulders.

If we stick to your logic, that every new cosmetic need to be gold-sink , and every event skins needed to be gated behind 1000 gold or 100+ hrs repetitive grind, we’d never get anything. Period.

Stop using cosmetic as an excuse. This Wintersday day adds absolutely nothing other than this one new skin, and yet they don’t want to reward people with the new skin they make, but rather want sinking thousand of golds because it’d benefit their Gem sale.

Can’t you still not see the trend of Anet’s current direction, and keep on blindly defending this? Do you expect people to enjoy playing Choir Bell or Winter-day’s JP for 100 straight hours for 10000 presents within 3~4 weeks? (Other activity takes even longer, like 3~4 times longer I should remind you)

Just to vent again:
With nightfury it was okey. I also really wanted the skin but noone knew how to get it at first, it also showed nowhere. When I heared the recipe was discovered, but it already cost 500g or something I simply dropped the idea and moved on.

This achievement is really evil. I have nearly everything completed already but I failed to realize the importance of the two grind achievements. I also made a bit of gold with the sigills (not that much) but I dropped it as soon as the TP manipulation got so extreme the TP even broke completely. Now I invested some time and some gold and have to question myself now “Which way to go?”

1) You sell absolutely everything and just use Winterday as a even more profitable gold-grind than SW

2) Go for the achievements and “presents” and most likely have to pay to even get it in the end.

Apparently this would be the trend of all future events if you keep on defending this.
We already have Nightfury as an example, and now this. What do you expect in the future? It’d be the exact same thing if people don’t protest.

New back piece, new shoulder, all either be in Gem Store or gated behind 1000 gold / 100+ hrs grind, or 0.000001 RNG drop rate that’d be sold on TP for 1000g.

Please be aware of what you’re actually defending.

I think you are reading far too much into this. Just because they are adding ONE hard to get skin with the seasonal events is NOT a sign all future items will be like this. I think you are overreacting and jumping to conclusions. Also, it would be a very foolish move on Anet’s part if they made every cosmetic tem difficult to get. A large portion of their customer base are casual players, and they would be the first to go if Anet implemented such a tactic.

The fact is, there are and will be cosmetic items that are easy to acquire, and there also needs to be some items that are not so easy to acquire. Anet added Nightfury to appeal to those who like to have something to work towards, and the same is true for he Wintersday Presence. This is not a doomsday sign that all items will be impossible for casual players to get. You need to reel it in a bit I feel.

And if things do get to a state as you suggest (which I do not believe it ever will), then I too will join those in complaining about it. But I simply cannot see that happening, and it is far too early to make any kind of judgement in this regard in my opinion.

They added TWO already, not ONE.

It’d be 3, 4 , 5 , 6 if everyone thinks/acts like you did right here. Anet would keep doing that because they’d assume all customers are happy of being exploited, and lots of free Gem-sale for them. (Gem -> Gold conversion) Yay them!

Not to mention all those real HoT skins are all extremely rare RNG drop already, which some of them worth 300~1000g on TP right now even after 2 months of HoT released. (Showing how bad the drop rate is)

So aside from Gold Sink from the actual expansion, they want to do it again and again in the events/ festivals.

You said “the state of game I suggested”? They already did it since HoT launch!
Guild Hall, Precursor crafting (especially the new one sinking 2250 orbs!), and whatnot.
It was already there ever since HoT launched!
This is their business policy now, what else do you expect?

Man, what happened to just getting skins from completing the event meta achievement?

This is supposed to be a happy, fun event for everyone. What fun is there in farming for presents for several hours each day of the event or spending mad amounts of gold?

It’s a Christmas event, who cares if everyone gets the kitten skin! Make the game fun, not a grind.

I’m not really sure how this is possible. I’ve spent about 3 hours straight doing events and gotten 150 drinks. That means 67 days at that rate.

The event will most likely go 3 weeks in total ending on Jan 5th however. 3 weeks is 21 days. That means you’re looking at needing 478 drinks per day or about 9 hours straight per day…….

To do the achievement I’d need to ignore WvW, Fractals, HoT stuff and focus solely on farming, that’s no fun.

I’ve spent hours playing the Wintersday events and gotten maybe 400, 500 if I’m lucky, from the gifts. I can’t imagine doing that every day – I’d burn out.

With the exception of the shoulders, the other items do not seem that difficult to get, so I’m not sure what your point is. I do agree that getting items like Mawdrey are more fun, and I agree that more items should be implemented this way. But the point I am trying to make is that the shoulders are not the only item coming with Wintersday and there are other items that are relatively easy to get within the time period provided.

Two? What is the second Wintersday item they added that is hard to get? I am only aware of Wintersday Presence.

You need to go back and read my post. I said they are adding one new skin with the seasonal events. Nightfury was not added with Wintersday, it was added with Halloween. I think one hard to get skin per seasonal event it reasonable. But it seems clear to me now that all you want to do is blow this all out of proportion, in the hopes Anet will listen and reduce the cost of the shoulders, so I see no point in continuing to discuss this with you.

Nightfury doesn’t ring the bell?

Even though flax seed is easier now, the endless Bat Brew still worth a tons.

Plus 7500 flax seed is still alot of grind-fest.

Feel free of being that happy customer that’d always be in favor of Anet’s current business model of exploiting their customers.

Majority of players already complained about the grind-fest of HoT contents and precursor and whatnot. I for one already endured it, got the mastery up to max level naturally because I play 10 characters, and even grind my own iron ores for Zap and crated Zap myself.

Even to me, who dedicated alot of hours in the game, feel like the current direction Anet’s is taking is disgustingly grindy, what do you expect from the majority of light/ casual players would think then?

For past reference, 90% of old events previous to HoT has no such grind-fest gold sink in any of the event, and reward you for actually doing the contents.

Last note, Nightfury can also be considered seasonal skin since it requires an endless Brew that worth 400g right now on TP, which are only obtainable in Holloween.
Wintersday and Halloween are 2 of the main Anet’s festival events, so they can be treated the same, so it’s TWO grind-fest gold sink event skins.

Yeah I know I should stop arguing with you because you have no interest in that skin in the first place, so you just want to make loads of money from this abusive event. That’s why you could defend this with a straight face.

Guys. Nightfury was hundreds of times worse than this. The ONLY costly part is the drinks. Just about every component of nightfury was costing in the hundreds of gold. And think about it- what kind of “special” item would it be if just about every player in the game could get it? You don’t HAVE to get it- heck, I don’t even really care about it because I don’t feel like having no shoulder skin.

I logged on last night, went to the vendor and was appalled alone just at the cost of opening the collection. 25004 Karma. Wtf is up with the 004, bad key strokes? Top it off with an additional 3 gold. I have 15+million Karma and this is not worth 1 of it. I promptly logged off and went to bed.

Edit: This is probably the same dev that came up with the ridiculous numbers for WvW titles we had to endure for 3.5 years.

Please patch to 100 drinks at most! 10,000 (800ish gold) is absolutely insane! It clearly needs to go down by at least a factor of 100.

10K is a factor of 100:
100×100=10K

The requirement is high, but that will make me look up to those who got it … all methods I see are either…. buy the drinks from TP ..T_T too expensive, …then I see the …I need to open 330 gifts per day …T_T too grindy.

I think combining both is not as bad, I played yesterday for about an hour and got around 100 gifts + 15 personal ones. … witout having to make gw2 a second job, you can easily enjoy the content and get most of the stuff (most people loved playing Halloween labyrinth over and over for the gold).. don’t see the difference here… I am more concerned about beating the jumping puzzle… that will make me flip some tables but I can’t refuse a good challenge … no offense but there’s already an army of cheaper good looking options in the gem store …. Now to be fair, there should be a low tier reward skin for winters day, like the silly hats back in the day… at the end everyone had them and the true value was only visible over time.

Suddenly in the Forums Everyone is now a Game designer!

I’m not complaining about 10k drinks… I’m not complaining that you’ll HAVE to buy at least half of them (if not more) on the TP… I’m not even complaining that people go insane about the price. (It’s their own fault if they’re dumb enough to place the bid higher and higher instead of going with the others and waiting until it’s their turn to receive their stuff…)

BUT:..

A lot of people mentioned that you can do that achievement even AFTER wintersday.

Here’s a little something: YOU CAN NOT!

If you had read the collection’s description on the item you get for the drinking part, it says: only available during wintersday!

That leaves us no more time than until ~5th of January or so.
THAT I’m complaining about. Either the achievement should be cut down to 5000 drinks, or the time pressure should be removed!

Hi, i think building Winter’s Presence should be fun.

Masterful Toast should be completely removed from needed item/achievement or set achievement goal to 100.

LEGIT effort for the presence shoulders should be supporting the events not grinding gold to get the drinks that count towards the achievement! This is ABSURD!

My suggestion is rise existing event completion:
150 mystic coins > 150 mystic coins
50 Obsidian Shards > 50 Obsidian Shards
10.000 toasts > 100x toasts OR completely remove it
250 flawless snowflakes > 500 flawless snowflakes
3x Champion’s Snowball > 50x Champion’s Snowball
3x Bell choirs > 50x Bell choirs
3x Snowball Mayhem > 50x Snowball Mayhem
3x Snowglobe > 50x Snowglobe
30x Refurbished Toy > 30x Refurbished Toy
3x jormag kill > 5x jormag kills

What we are currently supposed to do is go to event, finish all events needed in less then 30 min, then go back to grind the gold… Why anet? Isn’t playing events and enjoying them more pleasent? Why do we have to involve fluid income (aka gold and expensive items) to acomplish anything? Isn’t it sad that you guys told us You wont ever need to grind and swing again!

I did enjoy collecting and playing mini games, they are really fun, I’ve even done over 50 choir games today, because I enjoy them so much, and I felt really awesome to enjoy the sound and creativity of people.

But then i came to the point where I’ve found out that i need 10.000 pointless drinks.
I rather wont have the shoulders then forcing myself into something pointless like this 10.000 achievement.

Wish I could get back to GW1.. PvP-GvG. It feels like we are outcasted, not desired or rewarded..

Seeing all this salt just makes me want to grind and get the achievement more. I’m more worried about needing 150 Mystic Coins.

The 10k drinks is definitely bad design.
And so is the 2500 candy canes. Those don’t even have a Consume All option.

ANet, can you math? Seriously?

Many alts; handle it!

If you have trouble with that insignificant cost, you should give up right now.

it’s 20g vs 1000g, just saying.

It’s not as easy as you’d expect since one present exactly give you one alcohol and worth exactly one point, which is a rather dumb design.

We need to make sure this gets to Reddit so the developers see it and can hopefully respond.

Otherwise. I agree with most people 10k is too much. Who is making decisions at this company now? This game is getting way too grindy. I expect this stuff from f2p games. At least leave it that high for free accounts if that’s how you want to do it. For those of us who purchased your product make it reasonable, which it currently isn’t.

Your candy cane requirement sucks too. We should get that addressed here so we don’t have to go at it twice.

I agree with you on so many levels, i felt the love of how Colin convince me, I know it’s not only HIM who decide, but entire team, and i’m ashamed that they done such dirty move every time.

Where are MMOs that gave you quests and they gave you content on holidays that you enjoyed and you got online just to play that with your friends.

I miss GW1 and I miss devs saying :
Hey there, we made something for you, because you guys are loyal and you play our game every day!

Anet is forgetting that this games should be fun.

You forget that this game is not getting enjoyable, and it’s getting contradictive of what anet have said! They promised us that we won’t need to grind like we grind in other games… But the reality is even worst, we have go HORD AND GRIND. There is not a single event or thing … that would let us enjoy content…

Why cant they give 50x win every event in wintersday, then you get your achievements done… why do we need 1000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000 drinks?

I’m hardcore player, and i find this absurd due to one reason, there is a lot of enjoyable content in this wintersday holidays, and we should do events to accomplish achievements, not toasting 10.000 times where is the fun here?

This ONE achievement brought ABSURD BAD GAMING EXPERIENCE to literally every player that came to the point where he needed to get 10.000 junk drinks.

I’m sorry, this is just bad design team that decides what and how many things we need to acquire to get the desired item.. If you ask me they could remove 9900 drinks… keep 100 drinks in, and rise the event expectations to win.. from 3x > 50×.. and this would be a lot more enjoyable!

It kittenes me off that i was growing up with ArenaNet and now they became backstabbers.

EDIT:
There are things that are fun and awesome, mostly 95% of the content, and there is this 3% that we are ok with, and there is 2% that destroys every kind of gaming experience that was pleasant warm and fuzzy.. gone in a blink of an eye!…

Wish I could get back to GW1.. PvP-GvG. It feels like we are outcasted, not desired or rewarded..

You are all freaking out over 10k drinks? Wintersday started today and I have already drank 1000 without spending a cent on the Tp. 10 more days and I will have the 10k that is apparently impossible to reach. As with all collections, they would lose their value if everyone had them instantly. So if you are dedicated at getting them, I suggest you start opening gifts instead of wasting time complaining about it on the forums.
Tldr: there is nothing wrong with the 10k of you really want to work for it.

What is the most efficient way of farming gifts?

I’ve only gotten about 400 yesterday through achievements and doing everything for a few hours, granted I don’t know what’s better than what, so I had no focus for those outside the achievements.

I’m only responsible for what I say, not for what you understand.

The Winter Wonderland JP has a potential of 300 gifts per hour. But you gotta be perfect.
