..more like persistently empty. I took a few months off for RL stuff and came back to find things emptier than ever. I leveled a new character from 1-80 without seeing more than 2 other players in any other zone, and I’ve cleared them all. Cursed shore was once packed with event farmers and now it is just me and the risen. What in the world happened? This is seriously the loneliest feeling MMO I’ve ever played. If I wasn’t certain I was connected to the internet, I’d swear this game was a single player console game. Even Lion’s Arch feels…quieter. /sadpanda

Guesting happened. People tend to guest to busier servers, because they’re busier. Since it’s free, it’s what people do. Some people really don’t like this but I don’t see the down side.

Yeah, what server are you on to be so lonely? BG has plenty of activity. There is currently new content added that is being done as well, everyone is probably at Southsun Cove.

There is more than one busy server. Lots of people have said their server was busy. Some people are too stubborn to guest. I would say that’s their problem,. not Anets.

I’m sure Anet will point that out to the media when they have to spin closing servers. “It’s not our fault, it was the players!!” Except it won’t be the fault of the ones trying to make their own servers viable, it will be the ones who guested.

Who has said anything about closing servers? Just because someone can guest to a world doesn’t mean they could actually move their account there, as it could be full. Remember servers do have an account limit to them.

Don’t look at me like that. Whatever you’ve heard, it’s probably not true.

With guesting there’s not much reason to close servers. Look at what Rift did. They offered free server transfers, but they didn’t close the other servers. They left them as demo servers for people for free weekends. They avoided the negative press.

Anet, on the other hand, doesn’t have reason to close the servers, since people can guest at will. Why should they close servers?

I can see benefits in terms of WvW experience! Condensing servers may cause some servers to be more WvW capable, specially the lower tiered servers.

There is also a player cost/server. Obviously there is a line, where the cost of maintaining a server may not be worthy due the amount of players playing in there.

Very Low populated servers becomes both a problem for ANet and for players. Although players problems can be mitigated by the guesting feature, it doesn’t solve players problem regarding WvW nor ANet’s problems. Guesting is a cool feature, but it’s not meant to solve the population related problems. Merging will! Sooner or later that’s what’s going to happen!

/Cheers!

Yeah, I’ve been feeling like this lately too. I rarely see anyone anymore unless I go directly to Lion’s Arch. Even the minor cities (Divinity’s Reach, The Grove, Rata Sum for example) are almost completely empty 100% of the time. My server says busy all the time, but again, I rarely see anyone ever. Gate of Madness is the server I’m on.

That’s always been the case in the racial capitals, except at launch. There’s no real reason to go there. When SAB was open, Rata Sum had crowds. You’ll find a bunch of people in Hoelbrak on days when Keg Brawl is part of the dailiy but other than that, LA is where it’s at. For one thing, it’s the only city you can get to for free at any time.

Server populations are based on the number of accounts on that server rather than online players. I’ve checked on weekdays at 3am and the populations are still veryhigh/full.

TC has infinite overflow in southsun. Towns are full, so full you can barely take a step without running into someone.

You can guest to full servers, you just can’t transfer. On the US side I believe every server is very full. If you don’t see many people they are either in southsun doing the new content, or it could be a slow time of day/week. This thread is one step away from the endless “game is dying” argument… Be afraid, be very afraid.

Cursed shore may seem dead because many people dislike the epic mobs.

The game isn’t Dying at all!

However, the servers were created to withstand the influx of players on the release. The amount of players now, are significantly less than on release which can reduce the overall fun for those who stood in low populated servers. That don’t mean that the game is dying. Obviously those who though that the game was the holy grail of gaming have quit and left an empty space.

A defragmentation may be needed xD

Gw2 is an amazing game graphic & game-play wise. I would like everyone to realize that there are many many zones in this game and not everyone travels through the same zones you do. In my server for example people only stay in Queensdale to down the same 4-5 Champion all day along. I will say Queensdale seems a bit dead pro player wise because all the people are farming events in Southsun Cove, Wvw and pvp. I will say before you judge the game simply by what you see why don’t you check out how populated the servers are ( I checked for you and they are all Very-High). There is really no reason to go through each zone because you will max out before you go to all the zone. You can reach 80 without even touching story and only going to two zone tops.

Just got back after several months aswell, decided to try a new character and 50 levels later i think iv seen about 5-6 players through out the zones at various times (Gunnars Hold). Altho WvW on GH seem to have increased in its pop quite abit since i was last online.

Cant tell if its the crappy view distance that make it so wont see any players befor they run off or if everyone is just sitting in LA calling out dungeon runs. Whatever the case, the zones feel empty, chat is empty. My Guild left for Planetside.. Im lonely!:(

This is exactly the reason why Anet needs to scrap the PVE server based infastructure and do a channeled mega server similar to gw1.

And underflow system thats been suggested numerous times before would fix this aswell.

ALSO remember they havnt fixed PVE culling yet. which might be exaggerating the issue.

Culling is only an issue when there are large groups of people or mobs in pve. The problems are population density at World events and farming areas pulling people out of the open world making it seem like the rest of the world is dead. Which is one reason why people guest, which exacerbates the problem even further. Anet needs to take a look at some of their current mechanics to break up the clumps of people and get them back out into the world, and start directing people to some of the lower populated servers by offering incentives.

Servers are based on accounts made there, not players actively playing. There could be accounts on very high or full servers that haven’t played in months. If there is no reason to go through the zones at all, then why play at all? There is no end game to rush to, and the only thing waiting at the end of level cap is farming World Boss events, Orr, and Southsun. Unless you just want to pvp that is.

It’s pretty much the condition of the game, they can’t ALL be guesting because I’m sure there are load limits on that too.

I’d say that guesting has probably made it more apparent that there’s a serious population problem than people could see before. But we’ll still have those few who will tell me I’m wrong just because I’m sure.

Guesting on a server spawns overflows and those overflows probably fill up faster than the main server on slower servers. So even if you guest and end up in an overflow, you’ll probably see an increase in population.

Fireheart Rise is often empty because that zone is a pain in the kitten. I happen to like the zone, but yes, that’s one zone I don’t see tons of people in. Still do see people on my server, but not as often as in say Sparkfly Fen or Mount Maelstrom.

On topic- I find some servers do feel dead, but that doesn’t mean the game is. Hopefully over time all these events will add static and temporary content in such a way that we will have many more people and much more to do.

Off topic-

Same with Tarnished Coast..but it started the day the South Sun stuff started. It’s simply too rewarding for people to go to South Sun with the magic find buff and farm there. Everyone is doing it, even low level players because there’s no reason not to.
