ANet, What do you have against us?

We went through the somewhat lackluster personal story, getting even more lackluster rewards. Now you announce that you’re updating the rewards to be mildly interesting, but those of us who already completed it get absolutely nothing. This is only one of many gripes about the announcements so far, but this one seems particularly irritating.

“A Fresh Start” is an interesting choice of words. If you continue to alienate the people who have supported this game (financially and otherwise), recommended it to friends, and done everything they can to be helpful to new players in-game, then it really will be a fresh start, because there won’t be veterans around anymore. This should not be read as a threat; I don’t have immediate plans of leaving, but I think I speak for most vets when I say that, especially on the 2nd anniversary of the game, it would be nice to feel appreciated as a loyal player. With more than a title and a cake gun, that is.

Follow up question: What use is it to make a blog post that only really affects people who don’t yet play the game?

EDIT: Now that this thread has a red post (merci, Stephane!), I’d like to request we try to keep the discussion civil. It’s OK to be disappointed, but it’s not OK to be a jerk about it.

To prepare you for the upcoming changes. The issue I take with them is that they present it as if it’s some new feature we should be excited for.

They are making some pretty neat changes to the game. I do have to agree that I, as a veteran player, am feeling increasingly unimportant to them. But it is just a feature patch. Perhaps they do have plans to introduce significant, permanent content updates for veteran players to enjoy, and it’ll just take 3 more years because the Living Snoresville is super great and important and unique and it’s the only thing anybody wants right now, right?

After this week I am almost 100% sure that something big will be announced at the end of LS Season 2. And that “something” may come out pretty early next year.

Because, using my logic, that could be the only excuse for what they’re doing right now .

this.

the feature pack SO FAR ignores longtime players….just China ports.

the tone of the blogposts seems almost mocking in its absurd “excitement”. GW2 is still in beta, it seems. who needs new weapons/utilities/traits/races/classes, when you can have these announced “features”? long-time players.

getting real close to jumping on the “pro-expansion pack” bandwagon…

Hi Puddles,

First of all, we at ArenaNet very much appreciate the support that all players that have played the game for so long have given us. Without you guys, your love of the game and how you spread the word around you, things would clearly not be the same.

Today’s blogpost about the New Player Experience will not have as many visible effects to you specifically as it would have for a brand new player, that knows very little about the game. The new direction system should help you get a clearer and more useful top-tight UI, but also give your new characters better rewards.

As you noted, it is mainly targeted at new players, those that need it the most. We want their learning experience to be better so that they, too, can become veteran players of Guild Wars 2 one day! Learning to play a brand new game, and MMOs tend to be more on the more complex side of videogames, can be a daunting and hard task.

We want more people to be able to walk this path you walked and this is why we implemented the New Player Experience system, to create a route that new players can walk and feel rewarded along the way.

Again, thanks for your support!

I think the thing that people like the original poster are responding to is that it’s hard to accept answers like “we didn’t have time to fit that request inside this feature pack” when so much of it is geared towards things that don’t actually seem to be requested by anyone.

Something to keep in mind: A lot of these new-player-friendly improvements were implemented from launch of the game in China, which gave the team a chance to reassess things like how new players learn the game, with the benefit of experience from the international version of the game. Those changes appear to be circling around to the international version because, hey, they’re mostly done already.

While, as a veteran player, I’m only vaguely interested in new character improvements, I don’t think it would make a lot of sense to leave these improvements sitting on the table if they’re 80% complete already. (A number I pulled out of thin air: While porting a feature from the Chinese version of the game still requires work, I’m sure the bulk of the work is transferable.)

Thanks for the response!

Many of us, myself included, already have level 80 characters of every class (or at least the ones we’re interested in leveling). This whole week has felt like “Hey, look at this cool new stuff!”, followed by “…but since you’ve actually been playing the game, you can’t have any of it.”

I’ll mention again that today is the 2-year anniversary of launch. A day that is completely meaningless to everyone EXCEPT those of us who have been around since then. While I’m still holding out hope that next week’s announcements may carry some improvements for the loyal fanbase, today would have been a really good day to make an announcement that affects people to whom this day actually holds significance.

Today should have been a day for the players to celebrate the game, and for ANet to celebrate the players who made the game what it is. Instead, it’s feeling like a day of vitriol and disappointment for the players, and I’m sure it doesn’t feel very festive for people in your position either.

I’d love to see the figures on how many NEW accounts have actually been created… this system is created for such a small percentage of players… there can’t be that many new accounts JUST being created… GW2 has its player base, and its been dwindling, not increasing…Why? because there isn’t much development for the VETERAN BASE.
WvW/sPvP and high end PvE stuff is BARELY been touched yet we want the couple hundred new players that joined this game in the past few months to have an easier time leveling!

This game is NOT daunting, it is NOT difficult. This was by far the easiest MMO I’ve played in terms of leveling up a character to the max lvl cap… it’s incredible simple and was already fine the way it is…Everyone who plays MMOs knows rewards FROM leveling are never meaningful… because its not endgame stuff yet… after you hit 80, thats when you start getting into the good stuff and all your old junk is pretty much thrown away… why bother updating rewards for the leveling process when it will be junk eventually?

idk, some of the development choices are so weird to me…This update hardly effects any of us and there isn’t that many new players flaunting to this game and more aren’t going to come just because of this update lol…Why not actually use resources to develop WvW/sPvP/Dung systems instead of a new player re-vamp lol…such an odd decision.

I dont think new players are mentally handicapped, though. I personally had no trouble figuring out how downstate works after getting downed ONCE. I dont need someone to hold my hand and tell me i am a very special player and have such a simply game mechanic pushed back to level 5. Is jumping and dodging locked to a level too, or do you have to go through some kitten military training course before you are actually allowed to do the first story bit after character creation? You dont seem to realise that the Asian Market is entirely different from the Western one.

And of course you communicate this with us, who will ultimately have to live with it anyways because you are going to release it no matter what, BECAUSE YOU ARE GOING TO RELEASE IT NO MATTER WHAT, anyways.

thanks for the “appreciation” and “excitement” all these blogposts havent given me.

I tip my hat to you for 2 more years of disappointment to come.

Honestly after 2 years I really don’t care about rewards or a compensasion for rewards. What me and my guildmates want is new gameplay, GvG or new WvW and PvP maps/gamemodes.

The game should be fun enough to feel rewarding without throwing at you skins every time you do something.

Lol right now? This trend has been going on for a little while now. Pair that with the number of big names that actively play least in sight and we haven’t heard a peep from in over a year. Colin repeatedly saying “big background project we can’t talk about.” Uh huh… I almost feel like we need a big kitten neon sign screaming Expansion Incoming

But I could be wrong. Might be completely out in left field. Who knows. 2015 ain’t here yet, and it sure ain’t gone yet neither.

Don’t look at me like that. Whatever you’ve heard, it’s probably not true.

So the people that need new things/assistance to enjoy a game the most are the ones that have not touched anything regarding the game at all, instead of the people that have been burnt out through the whole thing time and again?
What is with your management assuming people require everything being a hand-holding trip in the park. It is as if nobody in a game-making company understood people that play games, which is fairly alienating.

Failure to communicate with their community about what it wants and needs. Nothing new around here, sadly. Although, they are atleast trying to communicate with us now, even if horribly uneffective, so i give them that atleast.

I remember when MMO’s were still getting hundreds of new accounts starting everyday years after launch. GW2 may be no exception, this is just part of the strategy to keep them going. I’ve known more people to give up on the road to level 80 and see none of things vets see on the way, than I have who have stayed the course.

they are just porting these things over from the china version (were they did appropriately spend the resources to improve new player experience)……so very little resources were expended on these features (and this applies to ALL of the features announced so far, especially when compared to the major overhauls of last feature patch).

this means one of three things:
1) next weeks blog posts will reveal much more substancial “features”.
2) this feature patch is extremely minor….deal with it.
3) this feature patch is extremely minor….because we’re going to announce an true expansion for later this year.

I do think it’s bad form that level 80’s don’t get the level rewards retroactively if they are item based. We did it all before this and we are the resin the game is still here. Heck I would have taken 5 champ bags just as a “thank you for playing and sorry you guys are missing out.” But I guess ANet can’t do that.

Letting people choose to replay the personal story (like they can the living story) and if it meets the conditions:

1.) Replay by an old character.
2.) First time replaying episode.

Then it gives those players the new items being introduced might be a good compromise.

I have followed the Guild Wars franchise since 2006. With this new Sept Feature pack revelation, the game is not looking good. They’re “leaving money on the table” when it comes to us vets. There is very little in the Sept Feature Pack for long-time players. We shall see how GW2 fares against its giant American and Japanese competitors in the next few months. The US competition has a major expansion coming out this November. After what I’ve seen in the expansion’s trailer, Blizzard is looking to grab GW2 fans to their side.

Two years and no GW2 expansion in sight. Worse, Guild Wars 2 is taking the very risky Asian-MMO-route in North America. I’m old enough to have seen many Asian MMOs fail in the US. The only Asian MMOs that made it here financially are Final Fantasy 14 and MapleStory. I know that MapleStory had to make major adjustments to its game to appeal to NA players.

We shall see how this all pans out. I love this game very much, and I don’t want to see it fail. Let’s hope there is something really good in future updates!

What they’re trying here is to Sync Chinese and NA/EU Clients. Remember they were working fully on Chinese release and had not much time to implement serious stuff in this Feature pack.

I was even surprised that they did one now and not later since it was a too short period to add anything meaningful.

Consider this more of a Sync pack then Feature pack.

I would’ve appreciated this, when I started tbh.

GW2 was the first mmo I ever played and I was so TOTALLY lost. If it hadn’t been for a friend to pick it up after. I wouldn’t have come back to it.

Once I started to get into the game and understand it..
I used google, asked friends and guildies alot of annoying questions lol.

It would’ve been much better to have some tips and explanations while leveling, and the story journal being smoother /chapter based is good too.

I think this is excellent for newer players.

This is true. But why try to pass it off as one then? They should have just called it a sync PAC or something to that effect.

The Feature Pack announcements will continue next week and some of them will definitely contain information that’s relevant to those of you who’ve been playing the game for long. We won’t tell you about them until the articles are live though, to keep the element of surprise!

Follow up question: What use is it to make a blog post that only really affects people who don’t yet play the game?

I wish you guys would have condensed these better >.>
It really lets the air out of the sails when each blog post is relatively small. Yes there is a sense of anticipation, but the bite sized blogs most certainly leave a “that’s it?” sort of feeling.

Relevant in the sense that we will get a new UI or relevant in the sense of precursor crafting?

4 months of work I expect precursor crafting. Revamping a 2 year old UI I expect as a side note, not a full featured blog post.

This was 2 weeks of your blog posts and i never saw people that was really excited for your content patch. Most of us feels like you’re cheated by removing regular patches with LS and this CP just feels very-very small. There is almost no new meaningful content (hey, new backpacks from chineese client that no one cares about!) in this patch, and changes that should be implemented like a year ago if not even on game launch. Even on reddit people very very sad and dissapointed, which i never saw before (they’re always very fanboyish and hate any critique towards GW2). You’re doing something wrong. Accept it and change your strategy, or you will lose faith of your fans. By faith i mean cash.

Yeah, Totally ignored my comment. Just like the support team. “Glad you gave us your money! How long have you been playing our games and giving us money?” “Oh that’s nice.”

I’m sure a lot of people really likes the change for character experience (including me), yet, there is always people to shout “ME ME ME I WANT FEATURE FOR ME ME ME ONLY, NO ONE ELSE GETS FEATURE BUT ONLY WHAT I WANT TO PLAY”. Get a grip and wait for the end of the feature patch before squeeking geez.

Thanks Stéphane for the clarifications.

Well, I can’t see the logic in this new approach for new players to dumb down the levelling process, aside from the fact that it is the way it is in the Chinese version. If I a 60+ old woman was able to understand game play and the levelling process as a neophyte MMO player, logically speaking I’d bet EVERYONE would be able to do so. From the 4/15 trait system, to this new dumbed down Feature Pack I have ZERO reason to buy another character slot.

Can you guys at least post the titles (tomorrow) so that we can at least speculate over the weekend, and not just have them pop when the first article of the week gets released.
Nothing major, bit it would be cool.
