In the case of oversights by Anet with loot, why not roll back characters instead of perma banning them on issues that many players feel is a huge gray area?

The difficulty for us is determining what a niche market is where the price of a good isn’t at its true value versus what is an actual exploit.

Some is obvious (21 karma t3 weapons when t1/t2 are more expensive and also causing karma to become the de facto currency trivializing everything else).

The salvaging of snowflake jewelry seems like a niche market though that corrected itself. I wasn’t aware of this until recently, but from what I’ve heard, the price of the goods quickly rose until it was no longer extremely profitable to do. If the market can correct itself like that, it doesn’t seem like much of an exploit.

Just something to consider.

No, honestly there are enough threads about this subject. If Anet chooses to change the punishment for something some users did knowing was against the rules from the start, and please don’t start with “its a gray area” they knew what they were doing lol…kinda like saying the guy walked into the store and didnt realize sticking things in his pocket was considered stealing in that country"…Then Anet will discuss this with said users via their support tickets, and not on forums.

If you are tired of these, threads, please discuss somewhere else. But rollback is what I think should be the best option and a flag for a warning so the 2nd offense would get you banned like an kitten nice person would.

I’m still confused how people honestly thought:
a) that the exploit in question wasn’t an obviously unintended effect
b) that they could perform this exploit hundreds of times and then claim they did nothing wrong
c) that they wouldn’t be punished with permanent bans, even though previous exploits were treated the exact same way

Seriously. There’s all this fuss about how it’s a “surprise” and how no one saw it coming, which is a blatant lie. The last time there was a large-scale exploit in the game, the top offenders (those who performed the exploit hundreds of times) were permanently banned.

http://www.reddit.com/r/Guildwars2/comments/z44ml/karma_weapons_exploit/

Seriously. This isn’t new. Stop pretending that you didn’t know the rules of the game or the consequences for exploits.

Remember when our developers talked about “strengthening the core game”?
How’d that work out for us so far?
Now let’s try some ideas that will really work.

I didn’t even know about this at the time, I just found out about it today. From what I understand though, the market corrected itself so that it wasn’t nearly as profitable. If something like this can be corrected by the market, then it’s definitely a gray area.

And while I may have been around at the time of the 21 karma ban, new players may not have been.

If Anet truly thinks some punishment is in place, ok that’s fine. But to go instantly to a perma ban on accounts even if they have a spotless record is a little over the top for something that really didn’t affect the market all that much.

Compare a 6 silver drop in ecto (unintended by Anet) with a 13 silver drop in Powerful Bloods (intentional). 6 silver drop in ecto price isn’t all that much to write home about. And since gold wasn’t created in the system, merely changing hands, I really don’t see how this damaged the economy.

Either way, I’d like the thread to stay focused on the severity of the ban and whether it is justified for something that in the end had very little effect or whether Anet should consider other factors when dishing out bans (like account history), ESPECIALLY when this comes about as poor QA.

Abandon your hope. There won’t be any rollback.

From a technical perspective. A rollback of this complexity is beyond the planning of their databases. From the patch/maintenance schedule, it’s really doubtful they have the DB backups of the days of the salvage. Even if they want to rollback, there is nothing to rollback to.

I half suspect the permanent ban has less to do with punishing exploiters than ANet DBAs trying to find the fastest way to undo the amount of Ectos and gold that entered the economy from the snowflake salvage.

I’d say if ANet screws up, and players take advantage of it, ANet should just cut their proverbial losses and have their QA team do a better job about that kinda stuff next time around.

Taking out -their- messup on the players themselves doesn’t make sense from any point of view.

they already took your money it much easier to ban than to roll back. too much work need to check the DB oh we’ll just ban ya.

They have in-built roll-back support now. They announced this a couple weeks ago. They can easily roll you back to a specific date.

Yeah, if only that’s what this was. Except it’s not.

Exploiting is finding holes in the game so you can get through the enemy’s sealed walls in WvW…

This is not exploiting. That’s just what the talking heads have “decided” to call it.

Yeah, I’m sure thieves say what they do isn’t stealing either. That makes it perfectly harmless, doesn’t it?

I only hope ArenaNet will keep those sickening exploiters permanently banned from the game, instead of listenting to their rants about how the “poor things” made 500 gold “without realizing” there was something wrong with it.

Except no one made 500g. The market stabilized within an hour, and the other dependent mats compensated for the reduced cost of ectos. It’s an economy. That’s how it works.

Even people do did this dozens of times have admitted to making no more than a couple of gold. The highest claim I heard was 5 gold. (read: FIVE)

And even if they did made a couple hundred, so what? Did you know that Volcanus sells for 597g at the CHEAPEST right now? And they -do- sell. Did you know that you can craft one for 200g and some fractal runs to buy skill points? So should people crafting volcanus be banned for exploiting?

I’m amazed at how people can pretend there is no difference between playing the game normally and abusing an obvious exploit. I wonder if someone honestly thinks that excuse would work in real life? “Hey, broke into this store and stole everything in it, but it’s almost the same thing as if I had bought it, isn’t it?”.

Except no one broke in anywhere and did anything. ANet shipped a legitimate looking recipe, the players made things with that recipe, and ANet banned them because there was a possible, yet unrealized possibility that they -might- make a profit…from crafting.

Funny, I thought the point of crafting WAS to make a profit. Silly me.

I just wish they banned everyone from the get go from the karma weapons at the start and Araha ect.
Going 0 tolerance now is just bad since there are significantly less players playing the game and contributing to the overall health.

It is just a bad precedent now that they really hit hard whereas before they let you play on and continue to destroy the economy through the many exploits that have been available.

It is about time tho but it still remains why didnt they answer the thread if it wasnt intended? Why would they roll back when they can get you to spend 60 on a new game?

Rollbacks are pointless. An exploiter wont learn his lesson from rollbacks. He will continue to exploit. If he exploits and get rolled back he lost nothing. If he exploits and doesn’t get found is all fine for him. So he will continue to exploit whenever he can because nothing really bad can happen to him.

By fearing of permabans people will actually think twice before exploiting a loophole.

Account wiping isn’t a punishment, its a let off, as there are plenty of ways in game to hide your gold.

But perm bans for a 1st offence is unfair too, everyone deserves a 2nd chance…

For 1st offence it should be a temporary month ban, so they miss completely one monthly event and the account is flagged for exploiting. In this case alot of the players would give the game up anyway and never come back. Well those who were sorry and like the game would get a 2nd chance.

For a 2nd offence, you would know if its a 2nd offence because there account would be flagged, then permanent ban.
