I admit that I was upset when they changed the system, but personally I only want to have every single (original) dye on my main purely for the fact of having all 400 (it was 400, right, Kristen?).
The thing that gets me now, is all the new dyes which have a much better ‘look’ to them are overly expensive and rely on RNG to get them – and with such a profit made from them, why would I bother to keep them?

There is a reason why dyes are bound per character.

If they were account wide, the value of each dye would eventually, as the game progresses, go down. It would basically make dyes non-valuable and worthless because once a person gets it, they have no incentive to buy it again. Meaning as time goes on, less and less players start buying the dyes. As a result their markets just crash and end up being worth next to nothing. Sure, everyone can buy the dyes whenever they want and only once, but if someone gets an abyssal dye in this system instead of freaking out and getting really happy they kinda just go “meh” and might sell it for the much lower price it would be at currently. If it were character bound, they might go “oooh time to make a profit!” or “I’m gonna use this on my alt”.

There would be no distinguishing between people who spent money or time playing the game earning dyes, as a new player could easily acquire all of them. It’s a short-term happiness but long-term negative consequences.

Of course, this system also makes Anet lose more money. This doesn’t suddenly make them an evil corporation whose sole purpose for this game is to monetize it. There are reasons why things are put in place, often than not more than one reason. Dyes ATM are a sort of vanity thing, where if you get a rare one it makes you feel relieved or nice that you have such a nice/expensive dye. Sure, I don’t like paying 20g for a certain color, but it makes me feel worth it since I will enjoy it.

EDIT: I’m talking about the original 400. I honestly believe that the new ones should just come in packs that are guaranteed to come with them. RNG isn’t fun on the gem store.

Has probably been suggested before but…

I’d be very content with being able to transfer a dye from one character to another (any instance of that dye currently on armors is removed and set to default).

It may be a little troublesome. I imagine the dye would become account bound once you’ve used it and could be ‘withdrawn’ from your Dye pool and returned to bottled form. It could then be deposited and retrieved by an alt.

I don’t believe this would hurt the desire to have multiple dyes for alts while still giving them a little more value and help prevent wasted dyes on rarely played alts.

Post #29173 regarding dyes not being account bound is surely the one that will change it all.

All hail post #29173!

^
Plus if that ever happened. “OMG I FOUND ABYSS DYE ON THIS CHAR AND I HAVE IT ALREADY ON MY ACCOUNT, I SELL IT AND I AM RICH” /Opens Trading posts, tries to sell: “Abyss Dye: Higher buyer 23s. Lowest seller: 25.4 s.” / PokerfacegiveusbacksoulbounddyesalreadyANET

This is why if this were to happen, dyes would most likely start dropping a lot less.

PSA to the community:

In order to get Account Bound dyes, you’re going to have to show ANet a way that they can monetize that better than the current systems without making the community at large upset.

ANet is a business and in this partly to make money (They’re fairly less concerned about the money than other companies thankfully). They hired someone from Nexon to oversee monetization of this game for that reason. Originally they wanted Dyes to be account bound (maybe regardless of the system they ended up implementing), they went with soulbound after bringing in the people focus on monetizing.

You’re best bet to change the current system is to show how to make Account Bound dyes be a win for the players and a win for ANet’s profits.

Can you show me how they make money with this now? It’s the players reaping the big profits here, not ANet. I don’t see how the company itself could care one way or another.

The simplest way to put it is that supply is so low due to rng and player demand is so high that it has created incredibly high values associated with them. Gold prices so high that the only feasible way to get enough gold for some of these dyes is to play lottery style with the gemstore or convert gems directly to gold.

The path of least resistance for obtaining these is converting real money to gems. Therefore people are incentivized to do this, and thus people that can manage this do.

The fastest I am currently able to obtain gold in game without gaming other people’s time for my own profit (aka trading post), is about 7-8 gold per hour doing champ trains.

So if the fastest way to get gold means it will take me 3 hours to get a celestial dye or 4 hours to get an abyss dye, I might weigh my options and realize that in 3-4 hours I earn X amount of money irl and with the gem conversion rate I can take Y amount of X money and end up having 300 gold from 3-4 hours of my time instead of 30 gold for my time.

This is true for every gold obtained item in game that approaches a certain gold threshold, that threshold is different for every player and depends on the amount of time they’re willing to put into the game.

Soulbound v Account Bound is only applicable to players who have alts, but given how quickly you can do a single story path in Guild Wars 2 (with no repeatability [except dungeons] and little incentive to revisit story lore on a character) pretty much everyone has an alt. So Soulbound is an annoying concept for people who are finding their original main to be stale and wanting to play an alt. It’s annoying since they can’t reuse the progress they’ve already put in, and since they will have to replay content they likely find stale to get what they already have it becomes frustrating sometimes.

Basically, what people clammering for Account Bound over Soulbound are asking for is to be saved from doing things they feel like will waste their time, even though in some cases they are willing to do it anyways.

tl;dr — to answer the question in basic terms, Soulbound is a wall/gate/obstacle created to prevent player accessibility for in game items. People like to follow the path of least resistance, and for numerous people the Money > Gem > Gold xfer is that path to flow like water around the Soulbound obstacle creating revenue for ANet, which happens to keep the employees employed to develop the game (even though the money goes to the publisher NCSoft first, who takes a cut, then money comes back to ANet). Account bound would make more accessibility, and too much accessibility means less revenue for ANet.

The argument against account bound dyes for Anet loosiing too much money is absolutely frickign ridiculous and makes no sense!

Hello? Are you guys even knowing about whom we are talking here!???
To give you a reminder – we speak here about an Ingame Shop from Anet.
A Shop, where ANet is able to REPLACE at any given time whenever they want something old in the Shop with something new.

They have enough of Developers ,that create non stop things, that they could put anytime into the Shop unendlessly.. the Ingame Shop is a bottomless Money Generator without any borders basically. A fireplace with unendless wood to throw in to keep the fire running.

If Anet makes Dyes accountbound, Anet can still replace the old Dye Kit that gives you some random dys for 300 Gems with these kind of special seasonal Dye kits, like Flame % Frost Dyes, Toxic Dyes, Metallurgic Dyes and so on ..

Thats they way how Anet can keep on making money and once they run out of Dyes, it can get simply replaced at any given time with somethign completely new that can generate monmey.

They have also enough of other options with that they can make more than enough money for the next years to come:

- Unendless options for new Minipets
- Unendless options for new Finishing Moves
- Once Housing is there, we wil ldefinetely see special Stuff for it also in the Shop
- Once Mounts would be therer, we iwll 100% for sure also see special Mount Skins in the Shop
- Unendless options for new Weapon Skins or Armor Skins
- Unendless options for new Perma Salvaging Tools (especially if one day becomes also hopefully Fishing and Digging possible)
- New possible Account Upgrades like additional Game Modes (Jukebox, Theatry ect to become able to hear the complete Soundtrack of the Game for example from the Character Screen whenever you want, whatever you want or to review all of the special Cutscenes and Vistas, whenever you want)
- Special Guild Hall Styles, once that feature is there
- Unendless options for new Costumes
- Unendless options for new Boosters
- Unendless options for new Town Clothes
- Unendless options for new Utilities, like something that could give you more new Dance Styles (How to Dance , band 2.3.4.5 ect.)

Do I really need to go on? I think all of this should be already more than enough options with that Anet can unendlessly make more profit with, than they need to be sorry with the removal of those stupid Dye Kits from the Shop, that surely not so many people buy at all, because most of the dyes can you buy also quickly in the game, except naturally not so easily the very rare ones… but it would be a super waste of gems to buy these kits to work on progressign on the very rare dyes…

There its faster to run dungeons ec.t and do everythign to earn quickly the money to just buy the dyes from TP, instead of doing the gambling with the RNG God and hoping to get what you need…

Personally I like the idea behind sub classes ~ quoted from Chris Whiteside

Sorry, not seeing any logic in the runaround answer of “well you need lots of gold because some players are greedy and ask 111g for a dye, so ANet makes money because you have to convert gems to gold so you have to buy gems”. That honestly makes no sense. As the above poster stated, the company itself can continue to introduce new dyes that are only available in the gem store to make actual cash. Additionally, if they wanted to REALLY cash in on account bound dyes, they could do as another poster stated and sell you an item which turns the soulbound dyes into account wide dyes. That makes sense.

and kitten off the folks who put down hundreds of gold to have Abyss on all characters.

Has anybody forced you to waste all the money? NO

Would be cool if they atleast could give you a different dye with the same rarity if you’ve some dyes used twice.
On the one hand I’m against this because I’ve bought abyss already 3 times, on the other hand I’m for it because it would prevent me from buying abyss 5 more times.

I dyes were account wide more people would be willing to buy dyes off the TP. Many of us don’t because it just isn’t worth it when it can only be used on 1 toon. More people buying, higher demand, drop rate hasn’t changed, if anything, the price would go up.

Be careful what you wish for, Anet might just give it to you “HoT”
