That does not stop it being offensive, obviously it was unintentional, but that does not stop it being very inconsiderate of Arena Net to still go ahead with the “joke”.

As a joke it still is not that good, most people find the effect and sounds aggravating regardless of the recent crash.

Given the recent event and given that the event is still present in the media, the idea was suboptimal. I would suggest taking out the april fool immediately and write an ingame apology.

I find it hilarious, especially idiotic sounds your toon makes while running. “Off” option wouldn’t hurt though.

Get a grip. Tragedy doesn’t need you fighting a game for sensitivity what it needs is a small note to a family member suffering so they know people out there are thinking of them.

let’s just hypotethically think of it like this:

It wouldn’t. the PC is wearing a pilot cap and we are able to control in which direction the “plane” goes, that makes us obviously the copilote and not the passengers.
We’re in the role of the committer, so of course we’d also be the committer in the analogy with the school shooting and not the victim.
So we’d have to “shoot” children, not to “be” children for the analogy to fit.

Yeah it would. It’s a nod to Snoopy and the Red Baron, children running around pretending to be pilots and stuff like that. It has nothing to do with the tragedy in the alps. You’re just trying to connect it to that for your own personal reasons. As such I stand by my analogy.

Last year you could change the date from your windows clock back for 1 or more days

Last year they had bobbleheads on April 1st, short after you could buy the bobblehead laboratory on the gem store. I guess the aviator cap on the gem store will be updated to cause this years april fools effect when wearing. There you have you reason. Just advertisement.

Making this connection is silly and wanting an apology for it is pathetic. It’s a cute event in a game, leave the real world where it belongs, elsewhere.

Really? Thats quite a leap you made. You describe a game that directly simulates a tragedy and compare that to whats in GW2 right now? At best, all the joke in GW2 can be compared to is a child stretching their arms out and making sounds with their mouth.
Where in GW2 do you have to crash your ‘airplane’ character, killing people in the process to complete anything?

Some people want to be offended and be able to make a stink about things. Funnier still is how almost all of the time, the ones crying about being offended aren’t connected to or have any involvement whatsoever with the ‘sensitive’ topic at all.

Want to see how easy it is to turn anything into a hyper-sensitive matter?
You people complaining about it about it while mentioning the European flight, are seemingly declaring this one tragedy to be of more importance than others, simply because of the media coverage it has received. What about the flight crashes and losses since then? Yes, there has been some (one of which was about an hour from my house). The people and families of those tragedies could very well be hurt by your placement of one tragedy over another in a sensitivity rant.
These forums should closed to prevent such a thing from occurring again as Anet, by allowing these discussions to continue, are actively and insensitively throwing it in the face of the people connected to these other tragedies and its bad form to let it continue.

Yah, it’s only 600 people that were murdered. I can see why it’s not a major disaster though. They didn’t die at the same time and place but over a seven days and their individual deaths didn’t get the newspaper coverage of the plane crash deaths. Those two factors completely rule them out as a major disaster. If only they had died all at once and at the same time so they could qualify.

What’s the offensive part about it? Please do explain clearly!

Is it the fact that there’s an airplane? (We should close down airports too then, too offensive all these planes flying around after such a tragedy).
Is it the fact that the character is doing what every child does? (We should beat up our insensitive kids).

Is your character running around crashing into stuff and killing other people? THAT might be insensitive.

It is incensitive to make people have sad thoughts about real life disasters, when they are playing a game, where alot of people spend time to not think of the real world.

1) It’s funny as heck so get a sense of humour.

Sure, Anet couldn’t have possibly known that there are people who actually want to play the game for more than 5 minutes (which is how long I found this ‘joke’ to be funny, including the time it took me to restart the game thinking it was a bug)

Fortunately, there are games out there whose idea of a joke isn’t to intentionally cripple the gameplay for 24 hours, just wanted to give my feedback to anet, have fun!

Writing this as a German, but most of all as a human being:

Anet has based the April’s fools joke on a bug in Beta events, tinted the screen in sepia and wrapped us in early pilot’s outfits from they early 20th century. The sound is highly annoying to me (but could be turned off), but I don’t see the 24h event as a mockery or the people that dies last week in the plane crash in the Alps. It is not insensitive of Anet to go through with the patch, because there is no direct connection to the real life incident.

Players using the “plane theme” to have “fun” by throwing themselves off cliffs in the Shiverpeaks, posting “Germanwings going down” in map chat and asking for a rezz are the real people that are insensitive and plain idiots mocking the dead and their relatives. Gladly I have seen the the majority of players telling those few to shut up and behave, proving that the community can be modest an decent dealing with today’s patch.

PG12+. So noted. I play it too, and I take full responsibility. :-)
He likes to explore the world, learn new skills, and slay monsters. I don’t see the harm in that.

Honestly, I’m sure the OP means well but with events like this you have to be careful of excessive White Knight Syndrome and PC Kneejerk. ‘OMG you mentioned a plane!’ is a bit silly.

So, people dying every day due to guns is not a disaster, therefore “who cares about them”, right? It’s not like a major disaster covered by the news!

I’m glad there’s a scale about how important a death should be viewed.

And, more importantly, let’s not forget to apply real world “REAL tragedies” to whatever game we’re playing. Even if there’s barely any connection.

They are not comparable at all, and a single plane crash is not a major disaster.

Err i think, a lot of the worlds population / countries think another way than you then, if you dont consider this a major disaster.

Arena Net could have done anything they wanted, but they chose a subject that was sensitive. The fact is they were inconsiderate, hopefully in the future they will just give everyone SAB, that is all most people want anyway.

It seems that you are the one lacking in empathy, since you’re only feel it when the media tells you to.

Personally I think it’s incredibly insensitive of the internet White Knights who like to drag up these issues at the slightest opportunity just for the satisfaction of a sanctimonious crusade and the glow of some smug self-righteousness.
