I missed the official sheet that mentions the timeframe after which it’s acceptable to forget about a tragedy, shrug it off, and continue joking about it without hurting anyone.

Can someone send it to me please?

Get off your white charger and stop with the silly crusading. I actually find it more insensitive when the moral outrage trolls desperately find comparisons for issues like this in order to have some pointless, self-righteous forum crusade about it.

And yet… you didn’t answer the question about how long we should wait until a tragedy becomes acceptable?

And I don’t sit on my charger. It’s hot.

When the Christmas Tsunami of Dec 24th, 2004 killed 230 thousand people, that was a tragedy also but Christmas was still celebrated the next day even though the Tsunami’s name was linked to Christmas. People still went to Christmas parties and gave each other gifts. No one suggested that they make Christmas a solemn, quiet affair with no parties, gifts, food and alcohol because 230 thousand people had died the day before to a disaster that will forever have the name Christmas attached to it.

People had empathy for those that had died in that event. I still remember the video of the young couple searching the beach afterwards for their child, trying to find him or his body, and the people frantically trying to find lost friends and relatives. But life goes on. Tragedies happen. People showed sympathy by donating money and items, but they still lived their lives.

It would be more reasonable to ask if ANet had made a donation rather than saying they should stop an ingame event completely unrelated to the plane crash.

I’ve been thinking about this today. I saw Team America just a few days after the tsunami and when the scene with bodies floating along in the water came up I, and the rest of the cinema for that matter, was pretty quiet for a little while and then got back into it. There was a moment of reflection where it mattered and then life went on.

Fire up the Hyperbowl ma, we’re going to town!

Would you like some hard cheeze with your sad whine?

But I suppose that might be because those bombings and battles didn’t happen in the Western world, and therefore they are not as “tragic or important”.

Which is my point, I’d bet that if this was 7 days after 9/11, suddenly that would be “tragic and important” enough that this would not of been run.

I’m really looking forward to checking out the April Fools joke after work. I have seen the screenshots and it looks hilarious. After hearing the sad news about the recent plane crash I could do with something to cheer me up. Humour is the best remedy to help you cope with sad news, so I genuinely thank Anet from the bottom of my heart, for embracing a good sense of humour and sharing it with us players.

Thanks Anet and keep up the awesome work!

It’s not a question of ‘how much time’ unless the content is comparable. To decide that you have to use some SENSIBLE REASONING. That would consist of asking whether any real comparison can be made.

ACTUALLY CONSIDER: If GW2 had suddenly included content that depicted an air disaster I would most definitely get your point, but this faux, contrived moral outrage because ’there’s planes in it!’ is laughable, absurd, childish and slightly pathetic.

With the plane crash story lol I mean ok it was a tragedy and we know that a lot of people died and some players relatives was there . I’m really sorry you have all my sympathy . But seriously why does it matter if gw2 did an April’s fool about planes and stuff I mean I work in an aircraft I travel a lot and I’m really loving this plane thing please don’t ruin it for the rest of us . We all had relatives die in different ways does that mean playing necro is offensive because he’s raising the dead ?

Thats because anet is an american company and the 9/11 occurring in america would make it mainstream enough to cause that effect, essentially it proves our point. Had a tragedy occurred in a country maybe in the middle east or somewhere where there is already constant death with the tiniest reference to it being made (which there is – knives, swords), there wouldnt be a single comment on these forums complaining.

My first thought was “It’s like when children would play around pretending to be planes.” I came here to share a laugh and see people literally trying to draw a comparison to the real life plane crash and crying insensitivity and offense.

Can we not have fun anymore? Is being silly with a game a dead art because SOMEONE might be offended?

but some players dont play to get sad, and some players did get sad over this even if you didnt.

Some players also dont like to participate in this kind of stuff, for tons of reasons and this makes theese players not play.

You dont feel it in game, since theres mega servers lobbing all the happy people together, but a lot of friends lists are empty and a lot of guilds have no people online, with people refusing to play till tomorrow.

Great joke, forum filled with rage. hatred, talks of deaths and dissasters and people annoyed so much they dont want to play.

Enjoy it, really!

Hm, so let me think about this. If this is insensitive because a tragedy happened and should be removed then the following should be removed also:

- All pistols and guns, because people get shot every day
- All melee weapons, because they there were huge bloodbaths on battlefields especially in middle ages
- All magic and magic using classes, because I’ve heard there are some religious people who consider using magic to be a witchcraft and is extremely insensitive to them
- All enemy NPCs, because people get killed every day
- Disable destruction of food items, because people are starving and destruction of food is also insensitive

I could go on and on and find parallels in real world. Face it tragedies happen every day some have massive media coverage some none at all. People die every day either from natural causes or inflicted, but this is just the way life goes. And if you would have remove everything that could be drawn a parallel line with real life tragedies they can just shut down the servers and forget gw2 ever happened.

for the people in the US, who obviously don’t understand what I other mean with insensitive and tactical unwise.

let’s just hypotethically think of it like this:
there was a school shooting again in the US and 150 grade school students died by the hands of some psycho.
A week later you log on to one of your favorite games and there’s a “april fools joke” that makes all the enemy-NPCs in to children and you have to shoot them to complete your quests.

of course it could be long planned but, after it happned it would have been wiser to wait with this prank and don’t do a prank at all or chose to do something else instead.
Of course people die every day, but this isn’t an excuse for stopping to think about other peoples feelings.
I find this joke actually is pretty funny, but I think the timing was pretty bad.

first of all, why do you assume it applies to people in the US? Secondly, not seconding your position does not equal not understanding. I am German and understand what you want, I just happen to disagree.

Back to the topic: Well, what happens here is very different from what you bring up, an enactment of an event is a lot different from “something having to do with planes” in this April´s fool joke. And even if there was such a school shooting simulation. Be offended all you like, I keep it with the Stephen Frye quote earlier in this thread: That does not give you any privelige on other people´s actions and opionions. I don´t care whether you are offended or not. I don´t have to comply to your values and opinions. That in fact is one of the pillars of civilization, my feelings, thoughts and opinions are not to be determined by a collective or some single person.

Do you Americans understand just how stupid you look to the rest of the world?

If 9/11 had happened a week ago, you’d be just as outraged but because it’s a german flight, who cares right?

Pathetic.

I’m an European and one of the guys commenting here is German. My family right now is in the middle of a warzone. Should I be triggered by the personal story or something? Or should we go out and beat up all the children making plane noises?

A plane crashed. Happens almost every day somewhere. Get the hell over it. People die in thousands around the world daily. It’s sad, but not a single life is worth more than a different life. And literally nobody cares what situation you’re in. Someone might be killed by a falling over cow. We won’t ban cows. Someone might have died in a car crash. Racing games won’t cease to exist.

All I have to say is that if you relate a tragedy that resulted in hundreds of lost lives with some silliness in a game where we run around making kitten y noises, you need a slap.

I knew people on that plane, and I’m perfectly fine with the event and realise there’s no connection at all except for planes. Grow the kitten up, shut the kitten up and get on with your lives

Also, to the people whining about crucifixion: I’m pretty sure crucified people would not be imitating plane noises and wearing aviator caps from the 30’s

When I first logged on, I didn’t think “plane” I thought cross, or someone nailed to a cross. Given the holiday coming up, I could see a lot of people finding this offensive.

Correct me if I’m wrong (as I havn’t really gone through the entire ToS), is there not something in there about religion or religious names or even slander? I mean if we can’t even elude to certain things that go against the ToS, how exactly can they put something like this forth (if Religious depictions are indeed against the ToS)?

If someone logs into the game and it appears to them that their character is nailed to cross, does this not go against their very ToS?

yeah man, it’s the holy week for us Catholics. when i first logged, i thought it was about crucifixion. and crucifixion on holy week and april fool’s is on the opposite side of the spectrum.

this is offensive to Catholic’s as well.

Are you EVEN Catholic?
Catholics will freaking REVERE the cross on Friday. That’s it, in that ceremony the priest and the congregation will PROSTRATE in worship of the cross. Having a cross show up in a game would be at least a big nod towards catholicism.

Condolences for your great-grandmother, sorry for your loss.

But your argument is strawman.

No one blaming ArenaNet for plane crash. They were extremely shortsighted to put this update out but it is what it is. What’s outrageous is all these Americans going ‘suck it up’ because it’s german flight, not us flight. If I come on forums after 9/11 and say suck it up Americans, many flights go down. They’d perm-ban me from forums forever.

how is it shortsighted though? 150 people died. That’s sad. However literally every week a similar amount of people die in other plane crashes. It’s not uncommon. It wasn’t a terrorist attack. It’s sad, however, if you look at it like that, then everything is offensive.
The characters are in sepia, with caps from the wrong time-line and making sounds like 5 year old children. If that’s offensive, then everything is.

besides the point that i found it completely distasteful, when i made connection to jesus christ and the planecrash within 1 minute of looking at it.

All the drama aside, I do think there are a lot of customers like myself who will be quietly spending their gaming time elsewhere…elsweyr.

funny how human mind sees a pattern in everything, is it not? If you can find multiple connections, then the object in question isn’t portraying anything. I can see the letter T, I can see a bug that used to happen in Beta, I can see the default model position that the model will revert to if an animation broke.

I think it’s funny and good when devs give a bit okittennowledgement to some of the smaller ‘holidays’ and have a bit of fun on April Fools.

But I too wont be playing today-tried it and thought it was good for a few minutes but now I just have a headache. Maybe the sepia/plane noises and helmet could be dealt with but the borked animation is just throwing me off.

People, we need to absolutely STOP!

A plane crashed. It’s sad. It’s heart-wrenching. People died. This is all true. However it is also true that the world continues on.

Tragedy happens every day, whether we’re aware of it or not. If the world were to stop for every one that occurred, it would be forever stopped. We would be locked in a state of grief and mourning forever.

I understand that some people are hurting, and my condolences to those people. You need to grieve, do so, no one is saying not to. However, the world doesn’t stop turning just because you’re in pain (I know, I’ve been there), and the ones that are gone wouldn’t want the world to stop either.

Don’t look at me like that. Whatever you’ve heard, it’s probably not true.

Americans should be offended at comparisons between the crash of the German flight and 9/11. ANet should ban posters who make such an inappropriate comparison.

That’s how this works, right?

Arenanet already apologised that the April Fool’s offended the sensibilities of players. It was not intended.

I’ve had enough for the day.
Having to watch my character with arms outstretched thrust her breasts at trees and ore nodes to harvest them and at enemies to fight them in melee is just too irritating for me.
Maybe if I was a teenage letch or pervert I might enjoy it, but I’m not so I will succumb to the advise that many of the trolls are giving and alt-F4 the game for the rest of the day.

It may not be terrorist attack, but was still caused by evil man. Many plane crash, yes, about 100 a year but not many, less than 5 are because of human evil.

Again, if this was american flight, no way they put this update out but because german flight they no care. It’s okay, americans always think they #1 in everything and dont care for anyone. I go now.

Sorry again for your great-grandmother.

evil man, what? So now, having a mental disease is evil? You’re stigmating depressed people. Well done. Well done in injecting even more stigma into the whole reason as to why that man didn’t even want to tell his work place that he was diagnosed with depression.

So of all things it may reference like:
-some old movies
-pioners of flight
-children pretending to be flying a plane

It reminds people of:
-recent plane crash
-crucifixion

just wow
