Honestly as someone most would consider an “oldskool” MMORPG player (I started with EQ1 back before Ruins of Kunark released), I wish it would cost money to repair again.

Death has very little if any consequence in GW2, and I sometimes feel the game would educate a new player better about how to play their characters if death has meaningful downsides attached. It’d naturally edge players to be more on the defensive side, in turn teaching concepts such as dodging, avoidance, protection, blocking and healing or even defensive gear (which for many players would be very nice to have in the open world, if they don’t have aspirations to join a raid with that for example… and even then, raids work naked, they’d be fine in Nomad gear, too :P ).

In any case, frankly I’d return repair costs.

The strength of heart to face oneself has been made manifest. The persona Carighan has appeared.

Just think of the way other mmos punish death. If you die in other mmos you have to walk back to the place where you died. In gw2 having to walk back to the place where you died is not a problem since you can just wp. The armor fixing is the only thing that can counteract the lack of punishment in gw2.

And yes, a punishment is essential. It rewards careful gameplay and actually makes you not to want to die cause you cant stand the yellow shield icon popping up.

Necropost level = 2 years.

It’s important to note that in the 2 years of players complaining about the armor repair mechanic being a useless waste-of-time, they still haven’t removed it.

Either update the system so it serves a function or remove it, please, ANet.

Also stop giving me those worthless instant repair cans from my Black Lion stuff. GRRRRRRRRRRRR.

Luckily, there are old systems they have eventually fixed… so maybe we can still hope

I’d laugh if they solved this issue by making us pay again.

Nobody at Anet loves WvW like Grouch loved PvP. That’s what we need, a WvW Grouch, but taller.

IMO costless repairs are ok, but the penalty for damaged armor should be progressive with each piece, instead of binary with all of them.

EXAMPLE:
1 piece of armor damaged = -3% effectivity
2 pieces of armor damaged = -6% effectivity
3 pieces of armor damaged = -13% effectivity
4 pieces of armor damaged = -25% effectivity
5 pieces of armor damaged = -50% effectivity
6 pieces of armor damaged = -100% effectivity

that it makes every other class in the game boring to play.”

I also vote for the return of the armor repair penalty and removal of WP costs.

And while we’re at it, with mounts coming, I’d say they should remove about 90% of the WPs in the game. Make the world livelier by having people running around and/or make more use of Asura Gates instead of Waypoints.
Put up some story that Balthazar damages whatever WPs use to work and now there’s not enough energy to build new ones and a bunch just went dead, w/e.

One of the cool things about other (older) MMOs I used to play was the sense of danger and adventure going forward somewhere I knew it’d be hard to return to if I die.

The same can applies to armor repair, make the cost like 10s or 20s per damage piece. That’s a huge gold sink beneficial to the game’s economy, makes players consider their actions more carefully, you’d stop seeing those people AFKing in the middle of nowhere getting ressed and killed over and over again, so it’d also help make players work towards improving themselves than just zerging bosses.
Currently dailies give 2g which is quite a lot so a player can die like 10~20 times per day without a loss, but make it scalable with their level (or gear) of course.

And oh, do remove the armor damage from WvW, just like PvP, or come up with a new mechanic to punish WvW death in a way not to make zergs shy from engaging and dying.

I have to disagree with one point: getting rid of WPs wont cause that sense of danger if you are in a map below your level. I can kill anything in any zone level 30 and below in one or two hits. I can kill anything in any zone level 60 and below in about 5 or 6, could do less if i was playing a power class too. The only exception is champions and even then they melt pretty quick too.

If they wanted to get rid of WPs, and manage to balance out downscaling + make the lower level areas more fun for a high level person to enter, id agree. Otherwise id rather just be able to go where i need to go and leave.

The pvp community reminds me of what Obi-kittenenobi describes Mos Eisley as from star wars.

Personally, I like the way it is now, but I think they should add some sort of “repair animation”. Like they could make the character hold something small that looks like an armour piece and use the same animation for when you repair walls and doors and such in WvW with the hammer. That way, repair will take a bit more time (just a few seconds) but besides adding immersion, it also becomes a bit annoying in the future so people might mind dying a bit more.

Right now, it’s just click here, there and boom, you’re done. It’s a bit boring and unoriginal if you ask me.
