The rumor is that Anet will not be releasing any more stat-based vertical progression items, but instead return to the fully skill-based 100% horizontal progression game GW2 was marketed as for years. So it looks like the ascended trinkets items will be will be Anet’s stop point in the failed experiment of trying to please the WoW teenagers. And I’ve also heard that there is a massive number of beautiful new armor and weapon skins being designed by Anet, with a myriad of paths to attain them (laurels, dungeons, gem store, karma, crafting ect…). Of course your laurels will not be wasted, because they will be one of the methods of attaining the beautiful new skins and multiple sets of exotic gear so you can use many different builds for your character.

If you had some friends that quit the game, if you think of it like this you’ll know why.

you goto a restaurant and order food. Food hasn’t come out in over 1 hour, what do you do?

Now think of it like this, you buy a game and they promise something, but they kept you waiting for a whole year not telling you a thing, what do you do?

Depends on the food. I’ll wait 3 hours for something cooked by Gordon Ramsay.

I would love to see something official instead of just rumor. The biggest reason I stopped playing (I still log in every now and then for spvp) was the emphasis on the dailies and monthlies instead of them just being another avenue like at launch. This title is better than, kill x amount of land rats, kill x amount of water rats, kill x amount of different species of rats, collect x amount of rats that grow out of the ground. This coupled with the emphasis on temporary content meant way too much regulation on me as a player in having X amount of time for completing content or accumulate a currency.

This with Anet placing more emphasis on permanent content will make this game really solid imo.

Where did you get this information? Please post a link, as I am probably not the only one wanting to read through it. If they stop vertical progression at the trinket level, then the implications of such, would ripple through other parts of the end game content. I.E Fractals of the Mists. It makes no sense for them to spend the time on Fractals and its current AR progression through ascended gear, to simply say, “Well, we won’t be releasing anymore ascended gear (for whatever reason), instead we are ONLY going to focus our efforts on cosmetic gear exclusively .” This just does not sound like something they would do. To me anyway. I only want more ascended gear so I can further my leveling in fractals.

True. All they said was that they won’t be releasing a new tier of gear in 2013. There’s no quote even remotely addressing ascended gear’s future since that statement.

With ANets current philosophy, it’s far more likely that they will introduce lvl90 exotic gear alongside a new expansion in 2014, which would have the same stats as ascended gear now, just without infusion slot. I feel that a good part of the player base has already been weened off the desire to have a static gear power plateau, anyway, which allows ANet to continue developing their vertical progression in the future without a backlash the likes of Lost Shores.

More like food comes but it’s bad and apparently double the price. That’s what ascended gear is like to GW1 fans.

I’m very happy the ascended armor takes time to happen. I’m currently 5/6 ascended and not yet ready for another round of gear. Maybe next year. 2015 sounds like a good time for ascended weapons.

I’m afraid i’d need quotes for all of those above, because their last official (and unofficial) statements i have seen mentioned having full ascended equipment set to be released before the end of the year, and that there will be no new tier of equipment… in 2013 (but in general they are going to continue item progression on a shallow curve). And certainly i haven’t heard anything about new skins – and i am actively looking for any info about that.

If there were any leaks and/or statements to change the above, i’d very like to see them (because any third-hand rumours would not be very believable at this moment).

If this is true they should said that asap…

The threat of ascended AND legendary tier is what is preventing people like me to build exotic skins and forcing them to craft legendary boring stuff with skin we don t even like :/

That is infact preventing people to play how they like.

So if its true it would be one of the best thing since release as long as we have that written somewhere.

(also i would delete one row from my sig)

My theory on ascended weapons so far is based around the new “guildweapons”

Even though it would be bad for people without a guild, but did you notice how “broken” their design is?
What if they work like the “fractal prototype backpiece”, beeing upgraded to a ascended form and thus becoming “complete”.

“We want higher stat armor so that, temporarily, we can pawn players that have less time than us.”

Ask yourself, why would you want a higher level of armor? You can increase the game’s difficulty without raising any level cap or armor rarity cap. In fact, increasing the level cap will make all your previously acquired armor useless, so I’m seriously puzzled why anyone in their right mind would want this, if not to temporarily pawn players that have less time.

If you wish, Anet can introduce exotic “prestige armor” which is insanely difficult to acquire due to the high skill level required, if that’s what you want. But given that you referred to acquiring said gear with laurels, which is a time-gated resource only (no skill required), your motive appears to be being able to temporarily pawn players that have less time than you do. I say “appears” because I’m unable to think of an alternative motive that makes sense. However, I’m sure you will have be a better reason, so I implore you to give share it so that we can understand this request.

I see (and feel) significant difference between rares and exotic. I see no reason why it wouldn’t hold the same when increasing from exotic to ascended, considering that the tier difference is similar.
Significant doesn’t have to mean “I oneshot things i struggled before”. 20% damage advantage for berserker gear (which is the calculated difference between full ascended and full exotic) with increased survivability due to 10% better armor value seems quite significant for me.
Interestingly enough it is only insignificant for the people that argue for ascended gear.

It’s hard to stay 100% friendly around here. After that 9001st post you see about how “I don’t have time to spend more than an hour on this game per week, but I still want the devs to cater to me.” There’s a snapping point for everyone, but I apologize if I sounded mean. I’m willing to spend the time with this game because I love it, and I just don’t like the idea of nerfing designs down to a point where I run out of things to due because Anet is catering to the lowest common denominator. I would rather encourage people to step up to the plate and put a little more passion in to their own play, rather than distill the experience for everyone.

And again, to your newsflash comment. It’s easy to get the gear if you spend the time. It’s not even that much time. You don’t have to stay in one guild. Join a bigger one if you want commendations. There’s a problem with the mindset of “I want the reward without doing the requirement” or “I want there to be no reward because I’m unwilling to do the requirement.”

It’s like… either… Give me the gold medal for the Olympics, but don’t make me compete. Or… get rid of the Olympics all together because rewarding the people that compete is unfair to the people who don’t want to compete… These are the types of mindsets I’m perceiving, and it bugs the hell out of me.

I’m not sure what bugs me more; that, or the fact that people consider this “vertical” progression in the first place. For one thing it’s not required for 99% of the game, and again it’s easy compared to other MMOs.

Ok see, I am not sure how much you knew about GW2 before you bought the game.
It was very clearly stated during development that they realize time you spend in the game takes you away from your RL commitments- so they do not want to make that time trivial.
Many people only have an hour to spend on the game-regardless of desire, it is simply not possible to spend more time.

The game was designed with this in mind- hence the idea of horizontal progression, BtP model, cash shop etc
Saying that the demographic the game was aimed it is the lowest common denominator is just silly. You might not like it but it is the truth.

People who have little time may be very passionate about the game- they just don’t have the time/ desire to chase gear tiers so that they can play- Or as someone at Anet said: prepare to have fun.

And again, to your newsflash comment. It’s easy to get the gear if you spend the time. It’s not even that much time. You don’t have to stay in one guild. Join a bigger one if you want commendations. I think the problem here is that you perceive a mindset that from your point of view is laziness.
Again mostly this is not the case- people are not asking to receive rewards that they have not earned.
They are asking not to be locked out of future content because they have time constraints.
It is also not really unkown that GW1 never had gear progression and a lvl cap of 20. GW2 was supposed to be pick up and play where you left off.
This is why people do not want gear progression.
It was advertised as not having gear progression- this is not a secret

I’m not sure what bugs me more; that, or the fact that people consider this “vertical” progression in the first place. For one thing it’s not required for 99% of the game, and again it’s easy compared to other MMOs.

It does not matter if you do not need it because of basic human nature- and yes it is gear progression since it has better stats than Exotic gear and was introduced later. The stat increase is of no consequence – the fact is that it is an increase.

And I’ve also heard that there is a massive number of beautiful new armor and weapon skins being designed by Anet, with a myriad of paths to attain them (laurels, dungeons, gem store, karma, crafting ect…). Of course your laurels will not be wasted, because they will be one of the methods of attaining the beautiful new skins and multiple sets of exotic gear so you can use many different builds for your character.

;-)

Best new I’ve heard all year.

<3 you Arenanet. It’s rare for a company to be able to say “Welp, that didn’t work the way we thought it would. Won’t do that again”. That puts Anet back on my “favorite companies ever” list =D

I saw this post and I rejoiced- then I thought, why haven’t I heard this.
I am just cynical enough to want links.

If it is true however I will be SOOO happy

I hope we don’t get anymore stat-based Ascended gear.

Ascended trinkets at this point in the game were a good idea in my opinion because all they do is provide a minimal stat boost, but anything beyond that would create too much a divide between Ascended and Exotic gear. Not to mention armor is a lot more tedious to manage than trinkets.

If they do release ascended armor/weapons, I would like to see the emphasis done on utility infusions rather than statistical benefit. More magic find boosts without interrupting our builds.

When will ANET add them? next year?
I have a lot of Laurels and guild commendations and nothing to buy….

They will likely add Ascended weapons and armors as a reward for the GW2 raids mentioned in another topic at the front page of this subforum. Your laurels and guild commendations will likely be useless to get them.

I don’t think they will make them exclusive to their version of raiding.

If they did, the uproar and mass exodus would be huge.

Yeah, tying ascended gear to raiding would be a huge blunder, perhaps worse than the introduction of ascended gear (VP) itself. Personally, I would like to believe Ision’s rumor, but the reality-testing in me is too strong. Wouldn’t it be great though if they simply did a mea culpa and went 100% horizontal. It would truly be a new kind of MMO with a lot more staying power against the upcoming new titles. And, my alts would all be very happy that they don’t need to chase stats.

Wouldn’t it be great if Ascended weapons had no difference from an exotic weapon, other than having an infusion slot?

@Xenon.4537 and @Anyone who wants more ascended gear. Adding more gear with higher stats is a bad idea (what i really think is that any body who even suggest adding ascended gear should be drawn and quartered. Yes drawn by a horse across a field and then cut into little pieces) As other people have said a million times before you dont need more stats.

I know you think you do because you believe you need a reason to capture those 4 camps in southsun and then kill the karka queen because right now the reward is so crappy nobody wants to do it. I agree, Im one of those people who has on interest in doing that event because theres no point. The two rares and small as kitten chance to get a precursor are just not worth it. So whats the answer you ask?

The answer is to make it worth it, but not by adding cool armor to it. Make it more epic, make it world changing. Make it go beyond those 4 crappy southsun settlements. Make the impact felt in other zones. You know like that tried to do in the beta. Anybody remember those surveys they had in the beta about the events. They would ask you questions about the events and one of the questions was “did it feel like it impacted the world around you?” The answer I always gave was NO. NO NO NO. They have failed to make their dynamic events impactful. Make it feel like God kitten Sauron is building an army at freakin mount doom and if people dont stop him then divinities reach will fall to the blackness. Then when your rockin self comes along and stops him (or the Karka Queen, or whatever, please for the love of god use your imagination) Anets needs to make the town people remember you and awesome you are.

Also Im not a game designer, I dont get paid to think of all the awesome ways you can be rewarded for completing an event so again for the love of god, use your imaginations (those of you who care, I dont care that much because I have 7 alts and they all need to be geared so even though I play tons every week I have a long kittening way to go before I finish with the current content) and if the towns people remember your actions and making stuff cheaper for you to buy from them or cheaper way point cost or whatever because of how awesome you were for saving them from impending disaster. Whatever you come up with for the reward system, dont make it more stats on the armor or weapons or trinkets.

Thanks for reading.

TLDR; Anet please, make events more fun so people will stop asking for more gear treadmill

Too bad we already know the stats, don’t you think?

ArenaNet better finish what they started, I refuse to have an incomplete character.

Guild Wars 2 is not a sequel to the original Guild Wars but merely an alternative story setting.
