This feature adds nothing of value to the game, and it’s absurd to try and justify it. It’s inconsistent with every other previous tier of the game. The only thing it does is screw unwary players over. Had I not read threads like this, I would have gotten screwed eventually.

Considering the marginal differences between the infusions, it makes absolutely no sense to make it so complex.

And no, i should not have to dive through the wiki when playing the game. That just shows how bad the in-game info is, and of course a lot of the tooltips LIE to the player. Why should I have to dive through all of that when it’s clear the game designers don’t even put any effort in telling you about how the game works?

BTW, fix the Strength in Numbers icon already.

/wiki Unique

Took about one-and-a-half seconds to look up, ( if that ) from in-game. There’s a reason why every detail is not on an item; because it can’t possibly fit in their little info box. Thus, the Official GW2 Wiki, and the reason why a player can use an in-game command to get to it prior to doing something like, spending Laurels.

If anything, think of it as an extensive instruction manual combined with a strategy guide that’s free for the taking. If you want to charge blindly into something, by all means, go for it. Just don’t get offended when people laugh at your stupidity when you make a thread on the forums complaining about your ignorance.

Thank you for ignoring my post. You should take your own advice into charging blindly into things.

You have posted a workaround to a terrible game mechanic, and of course the fact that not even the in game info is inaccurate.

Stupidity might be user error, but it’s often a two way street.

I’ll bite; how did I “ignore” your post? I didn’t bold the entirety, as the rest of the matter was irrelevant to what I wanted to comment on. That, is in no way “ignoring” your post. I could personally careless about the other QQ’s in it, just wanted to focus on one of them though.

You see it as a workaround, I see it as an excellent source of information that’s relatively up-to-date, and gives people additional information that couldn’t be explained in the game due to whatever limitations there are.

You bolded, but you didn’t read.

My point was that it’s a poor mechanic that brings nothing but trouble. That’s why I pointed out it adds little, is contradictory to previously established game mechanics. In the end, it is a bigger con then pro.

And pray tell, I believe strongly that there would be no disadvantage in removing it. At least the complaints would go down. My disappointment is in that people defending it just talk about workarounds without any logical or meaningful attempt to justify its existence.

So you here, offer advice on getting around this mechanic. That’s fine and all, but it doesn’t address my issue. It’s somewhat useful before the fact.

That’s not good. If say, there was a mechanic that causes you take more damage at 2:57 in the morning— would it be justified if it was stated in the wiki? Sure, you may think that statement is absurd, but you would be thinking that it’s a mechanic that has no value to be added except to add some arbitrary problems to the game.

To me, this whole unique situation is marginally less of a bad design.

Add in the fact that the game itself has erroneous information and then you get a situation where you can’t even trust the designers with their own game.

It’s the type of answer that makes Microsoft Support seem useful by comparison.

What you are doing is shifting all the blame on the player. Is the player blameless for doing this? No.You should always be careful when making a big purchase. But certainly part of this has to be on the other end too. Responsibility is frequently a two way street— both sides need to work together.

I didn’t make this mistake, but on the other hand I don’t think it’s proper to laugh at people’s misfortunes for that as I feel that the responsibility of this situation is both shared. And getting rid of it or at least providing a tooltip would hurt no one, and prevent cases like this in the future. I think everyone benefits in the long run?

well i dont understand how u couldnt understand, my native language in spanish

And mine is Swedish, once again your argument is moot. The thing is though, I understand the full concept of “unique”, thus it is vague to me while you didn’t know the full meaning of the word, thus you looked it up.

…and still i understood that item.
There are a lot of reason why u didnt understand
the real is: u bought 2 rings, go cry and never forget to read again
ohh forgot, u read, so next time no believe in ur own brain and ask for help

Why would I ever ask for help for something I don’t need help with? Do you always consult google before answering what 1+1 is? I sure hope not.

An Ascended item is unique in itself. They don’t drop in OW, that’s unique enough.
1. I did read.
2. Exactly, because unique doesn’t have a unique meaning. It has multiple definitions – none of which would give a hint of one being able to use merely one ring. However, “unique” could be understood as there only being one ring in existence – which fell flat when I could purchase a second ring.

Well, you read it, but you didn’t understand it. Now you do. As GI Joe once told me – “Knowing is half the battle.”

You can always submit a Support Ticket, and see if they’d be willing to help you exchange one of them, should you have no use for it on another character.

In GW2, Trading Post plays you!

if u dont need help, why u post here asking for arenanet for helping? the fact is words has different meanings here in game, keep it as experience and try to send a ticket
good luck getting new laurels, pristine relics or get the ring as a random drop from different sources, also u can use both doing something extra.

Unique; being the only one of its kind, unlike anything else – and yet game lets you buy 1000 (if you have the money) these so called unique items – which is false because you can have many of those exact same items. I fell to that 1 as well, then realizing that I wasted my hard earned laurels on item which I can buy million but only wear 1 because that is Anet’s definition of unique. How do you expect player to understand the definition of word “unique” if you fail to understand it yourselves?

There are not so many games which fail as badly to explain different aspects of the game to the player. Is this a youtube or wiki game? If not why players need to waste so much time on those to do their research before actually playing the game so they can understand it’s failing logic?

So what? It is still valid. Instead of starting a new topic I did what most forums usually wants players to do: searching old topics and post on those. More logic that is failin?

Most forums want you to search older posts to see if they solve your issue, not to necro-post.

You’re replying to people who may not be here anymore, or might have changed their mind in those two months, or the circumstances might have changed, or (as example, doesn’t apply here) the topic has been resolved.

Avoid necro-posting and save yourself an infraction, if older discussion don’t solve your problem start a new one, don’t revive old ones.

The rings says Unique.

- And so what? Other players have same rings so it’s not unique like is said. How can you even have two UNIQUE rings on your inventory? There should definitely be red text telling that two of same rings can’t be equipped at the same time.

This.

If someone makes this mistake, what they should do is create a ticket with support. Support has been known to help in this situation.

And in Guild Wars 1, unique only meant that it was a green weapon not that you couldn’t equip 2 or more of them at a time. If you wanted to in Guild Wars 1 you could equip 4 of the same unique weapons on your character. There wouldn’t be much point to doing so but you could.

Just for grins, I searched for Ascended rings: while on this forum and on this thread page. It said, no results. The search function on this forum has been broken for months!

Rare is a quality identifier, Unique is an item property and it’s listed with other item properties. Since the word unique means “being the only one of its kind; unlike anything else” it shouldn’t have taken a rocket surgeon to raise the question that the item may be restricted somehow and further investigation of what it means in game is warranted.

The game lets you buy items that your character can’t use such as armors and weapons that are class restricted. While it would be great if the game was smart enough to prevent players for doing stupid things, it’s very difficult. This is summed up by a Douglas Adams quote;

“A common mistake that people make when trying to design something completely foolproof is to underestimate the ingenuity of complete fools.”

I for one would rather have the programming devs work on something more useful than making the purchase interface exceptionally foolproof.

We are heroes. This is what we do!

You can write a ticket to Anet and they’ll refund you with another ring of your choice.

The reason they don’t put a warning in the description is the option of infusing the item. Not all of them of course. Support in most cases will refund the item but they also point that out if the item you purchased can be upgraded. After that is done you’re able to wear both “unique” rings. I wish Anet would do a search on the word Unique….

At least it was only a ring. If you plan on running any fractals lvl10+, you’ll probably end up with more rings than you ever wanted and wonder why you wasted any laurels on them to begin with. I’ve just about outfitted all my characters with rings from drops and have a stockpile of extras for future characters.

I love reading threads like this and am amazed at how far some people would go just to deny the fact that unique and its slight variations are a staple in mmos. There is no reason for people to not accept that they did not read the tooltip and understood it like, I assume, the majority of the player base but rather they are just feeling immensely kitten they made such a mistake. My cat does something similar when she makes a mistake, she starts licking her kitten to divert attention.

I recall when I was still new to gw2 I did spend ~10mins trying to explain to this lvl 80 what unique meant but that guy was a fine example of being super dense.

I love reading threads like this and am amazed at how far some people would go to claim that the term Unique means what they think it means (instead of what it really does), and that it always means the same in every mmo (even when it’s not true).

I love reading threads where people try to justify game mechanics that add nearly nothing to gameplay.

On the other hand, now the game asks you if you accidentally buy a armor piece you can’t use. Thanks, Anet, this is a good first step.
