Beta key drop rates??
I knew the drop rate was going to be low. Mostly, I’m out in SW for other reasons. Having a chance to get something rare is just an additional reason to kill something rather than running past it.
The system woudl have been far simpler and better, if Anet would choose out by random of an active player pool out the beta invites, for everyone which successfully can make within say 1 week the requirements to be part of said “invitation pool” of players.
That way ANet guaranteedly will see this way only active players, cause the requirement fullfilment part will quickly sort out just everyone which plays not actively enough the game to get the requirements done in time.
ANd once phase two begins with sending out the invitations from the limited active player pool, everyone then will have again an equal chance to get invited, without that anyone had to grind their butts of for a whole week countless of hours just in hope to get that one lucky drop and Anet gets sure also, that they exactly will get the amount of players they need for the next beta and if they dont get instantly enough people together, they can still make quickly on the forums a little activity to award some active forums people with beta access that haven’t already gotten access to it via the ingame activity – somethign like doing successfulyl a gw2 related quiz to earn that way your access to the beta with brain and not with mindless grind…
This beta key hunt is absolutely everything for what Guild Wars’ philosophy never ever stood for
made a scorpiones last night with the geodes i found. i plan on making at least 3 more ambrite weapons from the geodes i get from the rest of the week
Gates Of Madness
Jewelcrafting to 500!
welp I started at 5pm my time and its 1am now think im done for the night still no damb key… thanks anet… only 8 hrs of my time waisted in the worst zone ever… by the time this crap is done im gonna hate silverwastes with a passion more than I already did..
If you aren’t enjoying it then STOP! The beta will not be worth it if you don’t enjoy getting there.
Sorrows Furnace
When I first looked into GW2 (almost 2 years ago), in particular if there were Australian based servers, I came across an interesting quote from a Dev. They said the purchase price of the game ($60 for me) was only sufficient to cover the cost of 3 years of Server/Bandwidth for an individual acct to play the game.
The only other income that ANet would be getting is from direct cash-for-gem sales.
Now I have bought 3 extra slots (so I could have a toon of each class, ie 8.) I also bought the Mats tab extension to 1500 stack size. I bought the bank expansion to 10 tabs. To kit out all 8 toons, i bought: 8 Picks, 8 Sickles, 8 Axes and 8 Copper-fed-salvomatics. I also bought 1 extra bag slot on my main. These are all that I refer to as Functional Purchases.I have bought 2 skin sets tho (Flamekissed and Krytan Bone)and a few BLKeys, and maybe a BLSalvKit.
Getting to the point, I believe my particular RND is inversely proportional to the amount of gems I have bought with real dollars. That is the more Gems I have bought, the lower my RNG is. I am the type of person ANet wants playing their game, ie someone who gives them money. Iv’e had a couple of discussions in Guild and Mapchat about this, and from peoples answers, most people who have a precursor drop/s, are those who have never spent a dollar on the game, other than the initial purchase. I have never had a pre drop, and I refuse to buy one off the TP. With the gold I have saved NOT buying a pre, I have 6 out of 8 toons fully ascended geared (excluding U/Water weapons, only applicable to a fractal and a HotW).
To my way of thinking, legendarys are only good for stat swapping ability, and in reality once you have a build that works for you, you don’t swap stats anyway. Ascended has the same level stats as it is. Maybe you noticed the price rise of pre’s/legendarys when their skins became account wide, that to me means people value the skin way higher than the stat swapping ability.
Regarding Beta, places should be awarded on position in the world (ping variation) and the machine played on (hardware variation), not based on whether you subscribe to a newsletter or play more than someone else. A beta should be formulated on testing, not pandering to your subscribing or spending habits, else it’s just marketing, which is what I suspect is what we have here.
Enough ranting, back to Lost Bandit Chest train for me, accruing mats for ascended gear for Revenant, when it comes out (and new Ascended weapons for new class weapons).
P.S. I hope HoT doesn’t break existing builds, sooo much time invested in gearing up existing toons, else that yet to be installed copy of Wildstar is gunna get a caning
But personally, I feel beta selection should be decided by Anet not GW2.
Do you seriously believe RNG is actally RNG?
After 3 years of not getting any precursor from either the mystic toilet or as a random drop, I’ve come to the conclusion that it’s something account based. You might say I’m just delusional, but after seeing some of my friends getting precursor after precursor it became clear. Coincidences happen a couple times, not a billion times.
FYI I have 6 legendaries and I had to farm all 6. Never got any help from the “RNG gods” (aka Anet).
I’m not even gonna try this key hunting bullkitten because I won’t drop it, that’s for sure, since my account can’t.I’m not sure you know what random means.
I am sure he doesn’t.
You guys are too naive.
-snip-
Yeah, I spent around 2k € and never had a precursor, too. Also never had a worthwhile drop in over 2.5k hours.
‘would of been’ —> wrong
I have all bag slots on 12 characters, all bank tabs 15 copper-feds,endless tools on 10 chars, full ascended gear on 3 characters wepons and trinkets on 10 of the remainin 12, 2 legendaries…
I had a precursor drop in dredgehaunt cliffs from a random spawn. The Energizer.
I was in gw2 beta and was in stress test beta for HoT.
I do not know how much money I spend but it would have bought a very functional gaming PC… I guess… I am at 211% MF ….
Still hoping for a portal…
Been There, Done That & Will do it again…except maybe world completion.

I prefer education to tinfoil hats.
Reddit straw poll: did you get a portal? So far
2384: no
121: yes

Drop rate just might be on the low side.
ANet may give it to you.

Isn’t that 1 in 19, almost 1 in 20? That doesn’t seem too bad. I thought it was much worse. Ha.

I wouldn’t totally trust those numbers. The players that actively read visit reddit, much less actually voted on that poll, are only a small percentage of the actual players grinding for the portals.
Both to answer yes and no too the poll... that’s why they call it a sample size
I think their low drop rate on this beta key might not be as much of a problem if it could be dropped from everywhere. But why limit it to DryTop and SilverWastes? If it dropped from all areas of the game, then it would still be rewarding active players, and you could have a chance at getting it by going about doing what you want to do… seems like a win-win to me.
Making you go to the two grindiest maps in the game and farm the same content over and over for hours, if not days, just seems like a really bad decision on ArenaNet’s part though.
From what we saw of the small portion of the new maps, they are going to follow the theme of dry top and sw. Do events to lead up to a mega event. It’s pretty clear they want players who love this type of gameplay, so that they can give rave reviews after this test and add to the hype. It makes total sense for a company to do it this way.
I’m enjoying the active maps while I finish off my achievements.

Then it is funny that this appoach makes it more possible that even the people that like it will be burned out and in effect see the new content in worse light. Those that do not like SW/DT, but farmed like crazy because they were serious about getting into beta would, consequently, make really, really negative comments if they got more of the same.
I don’t think that there’s enough people in the game that do like that amount of grind to make a decent beta population.
Also, now it seems we do have an answer. The drop rate was too low.
Remember, remember, 15th of November

I don’t think we share the same definition of ‘grind’. Dry Top and Silver Wastes have quite some events, also of varying content and mechanics. The chance of a drop correlates to players doing the events. To me this sounds like ‘playing the game’. Now, if playing the game is a grind for you…
If the keys dropped from playing sPvP as well, would that also be grind, since you have to play sPvP matches over and over again? In other words, is sPvP anything else than a grind, since the only thing you can do is matches?!?
Everything about this game is a grind... just see achievements like yackslapper....
Got mine after a VW run. Finally remembered to use an extractor so I was on my way to the Cryptologist, killing some mobs as I go. Got portal drop off a Drake.
Honestly I’m enjoying making the money and all the chest runs that will happen after this week is over.
I just do it not only for the portal, but because I need money and mats to get my legendary weapons and ascended gear made. I normally farm SW anyways so i’m mostly enjoying myself.
Even if I never get a portal drop, I’ll be quite rich and also the mat prices may drop as well, helping all of us as a whole.
I run about anywhere from 3 to 10 VWs depending on time constraints or if I get bored. And I’m a commander there, so I lead the events.
My issue is the influx of noobs that never did SW before and we start having lots of fails in every event! I’m about be at rage quit mode of that crap and very sick of losing! We had two VWs fail thus far, and one very bad but successful run of it where two groups failed to beat the thrasher at mid and then at north with 9 destroyed siege carriers.
It is randomly drop by mobs and I’ve gotten it at indigo veteran modrem but it wasn’t in the chest from the veteran though. it was dropped by one of the mobs there because I used the aoe looting system. You can’t hope for one mob to hold the key also because some gotten it from an event chest too. I didn;t spend hours in SW, it was more like, let’s play for 2 hours at SW, do something else because i needed money, continue later and play again. I did that for 3 days until yesterday to get it. Most people got it from Indigo in my map.
MF wouldn’t work though. I don’t think it does.
and also quoted from Halvorn.9831 “The chance of a drop correlates to players doing the events. To me this sounds like ‘playing the game’.”
small being as often as an exotic drop? a rare drop? or as often as a precursor never drops.. ive been hunting for 4 hours… gotten many rares.. and an exotic still no key… yet ive seen someone with 3 keys… what? why? how in gods name how!…
Dear OP,
A beta key will drop “when it’s ready”.
That is all.
;)
